During this period he wrote an universal chronicle that reflects irish and continental culture at the same time. Marianus relies upon a large number of sources, both written and oral, also of legendary origin, and sorts them with the mastery of the computistic science that he has learnt in Ireland. He comes to realize a new calculation of the dating of the Christian Era that contrasts with the traditional one by Dionysius Exiguus. Therefore, his work assumes a central role among the universal chronicles and circulates on continental Europe and the British Isles, influencing many later authors. The article investigates the relationship between the historical narration and the idea of time that rules all Marianus’ work. His cronicle is marked by cyclic structures that correspond to the liturgical partitions of the year and of the week. Liturgy, that regulates every monk’s and every christian’s life, represents, in fact, the continuous commemoration of Christ’s life as it is narrated by the gospels, and, for Marianus, its perpetual repetition in human events. Using chronology, Marianus Scotus seeks a confirmation to the truth in the history by detecting the connections of time and sense with the truth in the gospels. At the same time, he applies the same method to his own life by writing an autobiography that is inserted in the flow of events and shaped on the lives of the saints. Thus history assumes for Marianus Scotus a dual function: to illustrate the route of salvation that God has planned for the mankind and to lead every single human being to holiness and to his final During this period he wrote an universal chronicle that reflects irish and continental culture at the same time. Marianus relies upon a large number of sources, both written and oral, also of legendary origin, and sorts them with the mastery of the computistic science that he has learnt in Ireland. He comes to realize a new calculation of the dating of the Christian Era that contrasts with the traditional one by Dionysius Exiguus. Therefore, his work assumes a central role among the universal chronicles and circulates on continental Europe and the British Isles, influencing many later authors. The article investigates the relationship between the historical narration and the idea of time that rules all Marianus’ work. His cronicle is marked by cyclic structures that correspond to the liturgical partitions of the year and of the week. Liturgy, that regulates every monk’s and every christian’s life, represents, in fact, the continuous commemoration of Christ’s life as it is narrated by the gospels, and, for Marianus, its perpetual repetition in human events. Using chronology, Marianus Scotus seeks a confirmation to the truth in the history by detecting the connections of time and sense with the truth in the gospels. At the same time, he applies the same method to his own life by writing an autobiography that is inserted in the flow of events and shaped on the lives of the saints. Thus history assumes for Marianus Scotus a dual function: to illustrate the route of salvation that God has planned for the mankind and to lead every single human being to holiness and to his final
