For there<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> one<MH369> like<MH3644> him on the earth<MH776>, a blameless<MH8535> and upright<MH3477> man<MH376> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>fearing<MH3372a> God<MH430> and turning<MH5493> away<MH5493> from evil<MH7451b>. And he still<MH5750> holds<MH2388> firm<MH2388> to his integrity<MH8538>, although you incited<MH5496> Me against him to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>ruin<MH1104> him without<MH2600> cause<MH2600>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Satan<MH7854> answered<MH6030a> the LORD<MH3068> and said<MH559>, “Skin<MH5785> for skin<MH5785>! Yes, all<MH3605> that a man<MH376> has, he will give<MH5414> for his life<MH5315>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>However<MH199>, reach<MH7971> out<MH7971> with Your hand<MH3027> now<MH4994>, and touch<MH5060> his bone<MH6106> and his flesh<MH1320>; he will curse<MH1288> You to Your face<MH6440>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Satan<MH7854>, “Behold<MH2009>, he is in your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>power<MH3027>, only<MH389> spare<MH8104> his life<MH5315>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then Satan<MH7854> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> from the presence<MH6440> of the LORD<MH3068> and struck<MH5221> Job<MH347> with severe<MH7451a> boils<MH7822> from the sole<MH3709> of his foot<MH7272> to the top<MH6936> of<MH6936> his head<MH6936>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And <i>Job</i> took<MH3947> a piece<MH2789> of<MH2789> pottery<MH2789> to scrape<MH1623> himself while he was sitting<MH3427> in<MH8432> the ashes<MH665>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then his wife<MH802> said<MH559> to him, “Do you still<MH5750> hold<MH2388> firm<MH2388> your integrity<MH8538>? Curse<MH1288> God<MH430> and die<MH4191>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But he said<MH559> to her, “You are speaking<MH1696> as one<MH259> of the foolish<MH5036> women<MH5036> speaks<MH1696>. Shall we actually<MH1571> accept<MH6901> good<MH2896b> from God<MH430> but not accept<MH6901> adversity<MH7451b>?” Despite all<MH3605> this<MH2088>, Job<MH347> did not sin<MH2398> with his lips<MH8193>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now when Job’s<MH347> three<MH7969> friends<MH7453> heard<MH8085> about all<MH3605> this<MH2088> adversity<MH7463a> that had come<MH935> upon<MH935> him, they came<MH935>, each<MH376> one<MH376> from his own place<MH4725>—Eliphaz<MH464> the Temanite<MH8489>, Bildad<MH1085> the Shuhite<MH7747>, and Zophar<MH6691> the Naamathite<MH5284>; and they made<MH3259> an<MH3259> appointment<MH3259> together<MH3164a> to come<MH935> to sympathize<MH5110> with him and comfort<MH5162> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>When they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>looked<MH5375, 5869> from a distance<MH7350> and did not recognize<MH5234> him, they raised<MH5375> their voices<MH6963> and wept<MH1058>.
