Many records also contain supplemental information created by baseball research experts.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;This collection was created through a collaboration between The Society for Baseball Research (SABR) and the LA84 Foundation (LA84).\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;\u0026amp;lt;b\u0026amp;gt;The Data in the Collection\u0026amp;lt;\/b\u0026amp;gt;\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;There are four groups of cards within this collection: 1) Players Archived, which are the cards that were put away for occasional reference, consisting of players who were no longer active; 2) Players Current, the cards for active major- and minor-league players at the time use of the cards ended; and two groups for those who never played professionally, but who were active within the game: 3) Umpires and 4) Executives.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;A glossary of terms is provided below in order to explain the codes seen on the card.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;Originally, the information on the cards in this collection was handwritten \u2013 some in ink and some in pencil. Later, the data on the cards were typed. Some of the original handwritten cards exist in the collection, as well as some of the cards where new typed information was added yearly. A great number of the original cards have been replaced by re-typed versions, with all information typed at the same time. Many of the typed cards also have some handwritten notes added.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;This collection is particularly valuable to persons conducting player biographical research, as much of the information included on the cards is not available elsewhere, especially on players who spent their entire careers in the minor leagues. The collection is also useful in compiling minor-league team rosters and in determining player identifications. In many early publications, including daily newspapers and official league statistics, players were listed by only their last names. These contract cards may be useful in determining player first names, and thus, in compiling individual player career records.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;Although extensive, it is unlikely the card set is complete. Some of the information may be suspect; for example, obituaries pasted on cards describing someone\u2019s play in early professional baseball should not be taken as confirmation the person actually played. It is also the case that some brief minor-league stints went undocumented because the team itself never bothered to formally report a contract signed and then voided within days or weeks.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;\u0026amp;lt;b\u0026amp;gt;\u0026amp;lt;\/b\u0026amp;gt;\u0026amp;lt;b\u0026amp;gt;Using the Collection\u0026amp;lt;\/b\u0026amp;gt;\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;The cards are presented in alphabetical order. Each card was scanned as a TIFF file and rendered as a JPEG for display. Digitization sought to render the data on each card line by line, and to pick out the player name and birthdate to match up with the biographical databases SABR has provided over the years to researchers, and which are available online at Baseball-Reference and through the Chadwick Register on GitHub. In addition to those mappings, additional mapping was done using other algorithms, such as comparing names using formal first names or nicknames instead of commonly used first name. It is likely that many of these matches are incorrect. Users need to exercise judgement in evaluating whether or not the correct records have been brought together.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;A single image is presented for each person. Most players have only one side of the card shown; some have both sides of three cards shown. In some cases, for example, Javier Andino, two cards were created because a gap in playing time and the use of a matrilineal name led the clerk to decide a new record needed to be created. These instances are not merged.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;Any of the displayed text fields shown can be searched. The \u201CPlayer Contract Info\u201D field is the line-by-line rendering of the card as obtained during the digitization. The number at the start of each line indicates the order in which the scanning process read the card and interpreted the start and end of a given line. The \u201CPublished Career\u201D field shows information in the existing databases for players.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;When attempting to find a player whose name may have been scanned incorrectly, locate a player who should be within a few cards of the one being searched for, and note the \u201CScan Set.\u201D Search for the Scan Set and you should get about 50 cards; the player being looked for is likely to be among them. Note each Scan Set has a Scan Sequence number \u2013 1 for the front of the first card, 2 for the back of the first card and so on. In most sets there will be 50 results with the Scan Set numbers going 1,3,5,7,\u202699.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;When searching, use an asterisk as a wild card in your search. In 2006, SABR founding member and then-Director Tom Hufford alerted SABR to the need to acquire or preserve the cards. SABR Research Services Manager Rod Nelson developed a proposal to scan and digitize the cards, working with TSN Director of Research and longtime SABR member, Steve Gietschier. The SABR Board set aside funding in support of the project, but, while this was under consideration, TSN was sold, the proposal set aside, and the archives went into storage. Several years later, SABR Vice President Bill Nowlin re-opened discussions with TSN President Jeff Price and Shawn Schrager. Nowlin and Hufford succeeded in negotiating the donation of the cards. In June 2013, the contract cards were retrieved by Tom Hufford and brought to a warehouse in Atlanta near his home.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;At this point, SABR board member F. X. Flinn took the lead on coming up with a plan to get the cards digitized. Having previously done the joint deal among SABR, the Baseball Hall of Fame, and LA84 for the digitization of the last remaining physical copy of the complete run of \u0026amp;lt;i\u0026amp;gt;The Sporting Life\u0026amp;lt;\/i\u0026amp;gt;, he approached LA84 library director Wayne Wilson, now retired, with the opportunity to add these cards to their holdings. By the spring of 2014 arrangements had been made and the first few boxes dispatched to Los Angeles. Over the course of the next three years, LA84 scanned 372,783 images as TIFFs. These were copied to A2iA for additional optical character recognition processing, which included rendering the card information as data-normalized XML files, and attempting to capture names and birthdates to link cards to existing biographical databases.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;LA84\u2019s acquisition of the Online Computer Library Center\u2019s (OCLC) CONTENTdm software, in early 2017, led to a re-examination of how the images would be presented, and resulted in creating a single image for each person. The JPG image creation, image merging (33,503 new multi-sided images were generated), data integration, and metadata production work, all of which Flinn was providing on a volunteer basis, was completed for about half the collection by mid-2018. In the course of this certain new issues, such as some cards being scanned upside down, were discovered and resolved. The last of the digitization results were received at this time, and OCLC agreed to help load the materials in bulk. This necessitated transferring the images once again. At this point OCLC announced changes in the CONTENTdm software were on the way, and the project went into hiatus. Even after retiring, some players continue to be reserved by their teams.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;Opt. \u0026#61; optioned\u00A0\u00A0\u2013 player was sent to minor league team\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;Trfd. \u0026#61; Later, the data on the cards were typed. Some of the original handwritten cards exist in the collection, as well as some of the cards where new typed information was added yearly. A great number of the original cards have been replaced by re-typed versions, with all information typed at the same time. Many of the typed cards also have some handwritten notes added.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;This collection is particularly valuable to persons conducting player biographical research, as much of the information included on the cards is not available elsewhere, especially on players who spent their entire careers in the minor leagues. The collection is also useful in compiling minor-league team rosters and in determining player identifications. In many early publications, including daily newspapers and official league statistics, players were listed by only their last names. These contract cards may be useful in determining player first names, and thus, in compiling individual player career records.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;Although extensive, it is unlikely the card set is complete. Some of the information may be suspect; for example, obituaries pasted on cards describing someone\u2019s play in early professional baseball should not be taken as confirmation the person actually played. It is also the case that some brief minor-league stints went undocumented because the team itself never bothered to formally report a contract signed and then voided within days or weeks.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;\u0026amp;lt;b\u0026amp;gt;\u0026amp;lt;\/b\u0026amp;gt;\u0026amp;lt;b\u0026amp;gt;Using the Collection\u0026amp;lt;\/b\u0026amp;gt;\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;The cards are presented in alphabetical order. Each card was scanned as a TIFF file and rendered as a JPEG for display. Digitization sought to render the data on each card line by line, and to pick out the player name and birthdate to match up with the biographical databases SABR has provided over the years to researchers, and which are available online at Baseball-Reference and through the Chadwick Register on GitHub. In addition to those mappings, additional mapping was done using other algorithms, such as comparing names using formal first names or nicknames instead of commonly used first name. It is likely that many of these matches are incorrect. Users need to exercise judgement in evaluating whether or not the correct records have been brought together.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;A single image is presented for each person. Most players have only one side of the card shown; some have both sides of three cards shown. In some cases, for example, Javier Andino, two cards were created because a gap in playing time and the use of a matrilineal name led the clerk to decide a new record needed to be created. These instances are not merged.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;Any of the displayed text fields shown can be searched. The \u201CPlayer Contract Info\u201D field is the line-by-line rendering of the card as obtained during the digitization. The number at the start of each line indicates the order in which the scanning process read the card and interpreted the start and end of a given line. The \u201CPublished Career\u201D field shows information in the existing databases for players.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;When attempting to find a player whose name may have been scanned incorrectly, locate a player who should be within a few cards of the one being searched for, and note the \u201CScan Set.\u201D Search for the Scan Set and you should get about 50 cards; the player being looked for is likely to be among them. Note each Scan Set has a Scan Sequence number \u2013 1 for the front of the first card, 2 for the back of the first card and so on. In 2006, SABR founding member and then-Director Tom Hufford alerted SABR to the need to acquire or preserve the cards. SABR Research Services Manager Rod Nelson developed a proposal to scan and digitize the cards, working with TSN Director of Research and longtime SABR member, Steve Gietschier. The SABR Board set aside funding in support of the project, but, while this was under consideration, TSN was sold, the proposal set aside, and the archives went into storage. Several years later, SABR Vice President Bill Nowlin re-opened discussions with TSN President Jeff Price and Shawn Schrager. Nowlin and Hufford succeeded in negotiating the donation of the cards. In June 2013, the contract cards were retrieved by Tom Hufford and brought to a warehouse in Atlanta near his home.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;At this point, SABR board member F. X. Flinn took the lead on coming up with a plan to get the cards digitized. Having previously done the joint deal among SABR, the Baseball Hall of Fame, and LA84 for the digitization of the last remaining physical copy of the complete run of \u0026amp;lt;i\u0026amp;gt;The Sporting Life\u0026amp;lt;\/i\u0026amp;gt;, he approached LA84 library director Wayne Wilson, now retired, with the opportunity to add these cards to their holdings. By the spring of 2014 arrangements had been made and the first few boxes dispatched to Los Angeles. Over the course of the next three years, LA84 scanned 372,783 images as TIFFs. These were copied to A2iA for additional optical character recognition processing, which included rendering the card information as data-normalized XML files, and attempting to capture names and birthdates to link cards to existing biographical databases.\u0026amp;lt;\/p\u0026amp;gt;\\n\u0026amp;lt;p\u0026amp;gt;LA84\u2019s acquisition of the Online Computer Library Center\u2019s (OCLC) CONTENTdm software, in early 2017, led to a re-examination of how the images would be presented, and resulted in creating a single image for each person. The JPG image creation, image merging (33,503 new multi-sided images were generated), data integration, and metadata production work, all of which Flinn was providing on a volunteer basis, was completed for about half the collection by mid-2018. In the course of this certain new issues, such as some cards being scanned upside down, were discovered and resolved. The last of the digitization results were received at this time, and OCLC agreed to help load the materials in bulk. This necessitated transferring the images once again. At this point OCLC announced changes in the CONTENTdm software were on the way, and the project went into hiatus.
