are rolling in for the first long distance rowing challenge of its type ever  to be held in Scotland.  Castle to Crane is a 13 mile challenge race.  Competitors start at stunning Dumbarton Castle and race up the River Clyde into Glasgow City Centre, passing impressive scenery, industrial heritage and modern commerce along the way.  Castle to Crane is part of GalGael&#8217;s &#8220;Clydebuilt Fesitval&#8221;, and there will be a festival welcome when the crews return from the finish at the Finnieston Crane to the festival hub at the Riverside Museum and Tall Ship.</p> <p>The event takes place on 23 September 2017, with a ceilidh in the evening and a picnic on Loch Lomond the following day for crews who just can&#8217;t bear to go home.</p> <p><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170621031701/https://www.clydebuiltfestival.com/shop/castle-to-crane-entry">Enter online</a> now <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170621031701/https://www.clydebuiltfestival.com/castletocrane/">at the Clydebuilt Website</a>.  Entries cost £20 per rower, with an option to buy ceilidh tickets and t shirts.  The first 30 clubs to enter will be eligible for the Early Bird trophy&#8230;&#8230; so far we have entries from 20 clubs (27 boats and rising).   Early entry is much appreciated by the organisers as it will help with their planning and logistics and boosts their own enthusiasm, so please do get your entries in soon to make their day.   The race will be capped at 100 boats.</p> <p>We really welcome a diversity of classes.  Crews must ensure that their boats are seaworthy for the potential conditions, but entries will be accepted from any fixed seat coxed boat powered by at least four oars.  So far we have entries from two impressive rowing ships (Tarbert&#8217;s longship and Galgael&#8217;s Birlinn), from the first of hopefully many six oared Shetland Yoals and six oared underway with North Berwick hosting their first ever Junior Rowing Regatta on Sunday 18 June.  Deveron Coastal Rowing Club made an impressive day trip from Banff with 11 Junior rowers and a support squad.  Firth of Clyde made the trip through from Largs with a small squad which they supplemented with others from the beach.  Eastern attended with a full squad including Fife&#8217;s only representative guesting from Crail, and the hosts made up the contingent.  So there were four boats on the start of each race, and a special thanks must go to Boatie Blest, who attended without their Juniors who were not free, but with a skiff and coxwains to support the Deveron squad!</p> <p><a race format was split.  Firstly we had four boats lining up for drag races of around 500m, starting half way out to Craiglieth Island and racing towards North Berwick harbour.  There was a race each for boys and for girls, and then two mixed crew races.  Results were as follows:</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td><strong>Race</strong></td> <td><strong>1st</strong></td> <td><strong>2nd</strong></td> <td><strong>3rd</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Girls</td> <td>North Berwick</td> <td>Eastern</td> <td>Deveron</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Boys</td> <td>Firth of Clyde</td> <td>Deveron</td> <td>North Berwick</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Mixed 1</td> <td>Deveron</td> <td>North Berwick</td> <td>Eastern</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Mixed 2</td> <td>North Berwick</td> <td>Eastern</td> <td>Deveron</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p>Following the sprints there were  short pursuit races.  Two crews raced at a  time, each racing the same clockwise course, but starting on opposites sides, facing opposite directions.  Each raced from the start finish line to a turning mark, crossed each other again whilst racing through the line to the other turning mark, before giving it their all to get back to the finish line.  This was for mixed crews.  Eastern won the first heat, with Deveron winning the second.  The crews stayed on the water before the final, which was the last race of the day and saw the visitors from Deveron prevailing.</p> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td><strong>Race</strong></td> <td><strong>Crews</strong></td> <td><strong>Winner</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Semi Final 1</td> <td>Eastern vs Firth of Clyde</td> <td>Eastern</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Semi Final 2</td> <td>Deveron vs St Baldred</td> <td>Deveron</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Final</td> <td>Deveron vs Eastern</td> For the regatta three different options for courses are available and the organisers will make their selection based on weather conditions; all are around 1.5 miles long.  The Bell Ringer flotilla will proceed down the river in company with  safety boats before crossing the Solway Firth, almost along the line of the former Caledonian railway viaduct. It will rendezvous on the Cumbrian coast with the children and community of Bowness-on-Solway where the Bell Raid will be commemorated. Bowness is the western terminus of Hadrian’s Wall Path.  Crews can change for the run back to Annan.</p> </div> <p class="postcontrols"> <a class="no comments" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170621031701/http://scottishcoastalrowing.org/2017/06/10/events-to-enjoy-at-dunbar-and-solway/#respond">No Comments</a> </p> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <!-- /post --> <!-- post --> <div id="post-11010" class="post-11010 post type-post status-publish format-standard hentry category-uncategorized"> <h3><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170621031701/http://scottishcoastalrowing.org/2017/06/05/welcome-maighdean-charrainn/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link: Welcome Maighdean Charrainn">Welcome Maighdean Charrainn</a></h3> <!-- story header --> <div class="postheader"> <div class="postinfo"> <p> Posted by <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170621031701/http://scottishcoastalrowing.org/author/elsie/" title="Posts by elsie ">elsie</a> in <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170621031701/http://scottishcoastalrowing.org/category/uncategorized/" rel="category tag">Uncategorized</a> on 5 June 2017 </p> </div> </div> <!-- /story header --> <div class="postbody entry clearfix"> <p><img class="size-medium wp-image-11011 aligncenter" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20170621031701im_/http://scottishcoastalrowing.org/files/2017/06/Loch-Carron-slip-300x214.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="214" srcset="https://web.archive.org/web/20170621031701im_/http://scottishcoastalrowing.org/files/2017/06/Loch-Carron-slip-300x214.jpg 300w, https://web.archive.org/web/20170621031701im_/http://scottishcoastalrowing.org/files/2017/06/Loch-Carron-slip-150x107.jpg 150w, https://web.archive.org/web/20170621031701im_/http://scottishcoastalrowing.org/files/2017/06/Loch-Carron-slip.jpg 480w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px"/></p> <p>Loch Carron community officially launched skiff no 150 &#8220;Maighdean Charrainn&#8221; All turns were to starboard, with the wind (until the last race) being a head wind on the way to the turn and a tail wind on the return leg.  Unlike the usual situation, the tailwind was not universally welcomed, as it meant a considerable increase in apparent temperature as crews started the second half of the race.</p> <p>The (very generous and welcoming) hosts were joined by overseas skiffs from Ullapool, North Berwick, Anstruther, Largs (Firth of Clyde), Queensferry, Port Seton, Carrick and Killyleagh.  It was great to see local competition for Woudrichem coming from WSV Heusden in their bright orange skiff, and WV de Merwede, who launched officially named their skiff the day before the regatta (see separate post).  As has become normal, the attending clubs welcomed some others into their ranks, and we know that rowers from Langstone Cutters Gig Club (England), Broughty Ferry (Scotland) , Strangford (Northern Ireland) and Lake Champlain (USA) were involved in the racing.</p> <p><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170621031701/http://scottishcoastalrowing.org/files/2017/05/IMG_1606_BS-WM.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-11003" class="text_exposed_show"><br/> The dutch crews set out their stall early, with Woudrichem storming to victory in the first race of the day, Men&#8217;s 50+, and also taking thebronze, with North Berwick sandwiched between them.  Any doubts that the Dutch crews would struggle against experienced overseas opposition were quickly put aside.  However when the Women got onto the water normal service was resumed to some extent with St Ayles Anstruther storming home in a victory ahead of Port Seton&#8217;s Boatie Blest, and North Berwick&#8230;  three of the six clubs who attended the first ever St Ayles skiff regatta in 2010.  The fourth of those six clubs, Ullapool, placed second in the next race, the men&#8217;s 60+, in a race dominated by a strong North Berwick Crew.  Carrick had their best result of the day (with a very small team) coming fourth in this event behind the hosts in third.</span></p> <p>St Ayles Anstruther won again in the Womens 60+, with Queensferry taking the silver.  Ullapool lifted the bronze in this event ahead of Killyleagh from Strangford Lough.</p> <p>&#8220;Martin&#8217;s Dreamteam&#8221; from Woudrichem posted the fastest time of the day in winning the Mens&#8217; 40 + event in 11 minutes 40.69.  Second fastest time of the day was set by North Berwick in winning the Men&#8217;s open in 11:43.78.  These were the only teams to go under 12 minutes.</p> <p>In the youth events Anstruther, and Woudrichem took the medals, along with a North Berwick crew who had USA&#8217;s Lake Champlain and Largs&#8217; Firth of Clyde rowers on board.</p> day were for Queensferry winning the the Mixed Open A, and for the hosts in the very last race of the day, Open Mixed B, where they battled all the way back from the turn to beat a stony North Berwick crew.   Half the crews in that raced dived into the water at the end in celebration and in search of relief from the heat.</p> <p>The Saturday regatta was preceded by short sprints on the Thursday night (held on the ice skating pond), and a mystery tour by skiff on the Friday morning.  On Friday afternoon there was a trip accross the busiest waterway in Europe, to welcome the newest skiff on to the water at Gorinchem.</p> <p>The welcome extended to visiting clubs really was astonishing, with so may volunteers putting in so much effort.  A very big thank you on behalf of all visitors is extended to the WSV Woudrichem, their members and their neighbours.  It is hard to imagine how they could have done anything more, and we love having them as part of our community.</p> <p><a
