In ancient Near Eastern culture, the right hand was considered the hand of skill and might. This phrase emphasizes God's supreme power and authority, which is unmatched and awe-inspiring. The use of "majestic" highlights the grandeur and splendor of God's power, suggesting that it is not only effective but also glorious. This imagery is consistent with other biblical passages, such as Psalm 118:16, which also speaks of the LORD's right hand doing mighty things. The right hand of God is often associated with deliverance and victory, as seen in the deliverance of Israel from Egypt.
Your right hand, O LORD, has shattered the enemy.
The repetition of "Your right hand, O LORD" underscores the personal involvement of God in the deliverance of His people. The term "shattered" conveys a complete and decisive defeat, indicating that the enemy is utterly destroyed. This reflects the historical context of the Exodus, where God delivered the Israelites from the Egyptians by parting the Red Sea and then allowing it to collapse upon the pursuing Egyptian army. This act of divine intervention is a demonstration of God's protective power over His covenant people. Theologically, this can be seen as a type of Christ's victory over sin and death, where through His death and resurrection, He has defeated the ultimate enemy. This victory is echoed in the New Testament, particularly in passages like 1 Corinthians 15:54-57, where Christ's triumph over death is celebrated.
Persons / Places / Events
1. The LORD (Yahweh)
The central figure in this verse, representing the God of Israel, who is praised for His power and might.

2. The Right Hand of the LORD
Symbolizes strength, authority, and the active power of God in delivering His people.

3. The Enemy
Refers to the Egyptians who pursued the Israelites, representing any force opposing God's will.

4. The Israelites
God's chosen people, who have just been delivered from slavery in Egypt.

5. The Red Sea Crossing
The miraculous event where God parted the sea to allow the Israelites to escape from the Egyptians, culminating in the destruction of the Egyptian army.
Teaching Points
God's Majestic Power
Recognize and trust in the unmatched power of God to deliver and protect His people.

Divine Intervention
Reflect on times when God has intervened in your life, providing deliverance and victory over challenges.

Symbolism of the Right Hand
Understand the biblical symbolism of the right hand as a representation of strength and authority.

God's Faithfulness
Be encouraged by God's faithfulness to His promises, as demonstrated in His deliverance of Israel.

Victory Over Enemies
Take comfort in knowing that God can shatter any opposition, just as He did with the Egyptians.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Exodus 15

What is the Right Hand of Fellowship?

What does the Bible say about respecting parents?

Why does 2 Kings 14:8-14 record Amaziah's defeat by Israel if he was said to do right in the eyes of the LORD (2 Kings 14:3)?

Deuteronomy 5:15 links keeping the Sabbath to the Exodus event; what is the archaeological or historical evidence for such a large-scale event?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(6-10) The second stanza, or strophe, expands the subject-matter of the first. It begins, like the first, with some general expressions, setting forth the glory and power of Jehovah (Exodus 15:6-7), as shown in the recent catastrophe. From this it proceeds to the catastrophe itself, which it describes in considerable detail, noting (1) the sudden rise of the wind (Exodus 15:8); (2) the gathering together of the waters into separate masses (ibid.); (3) the boastful and vindictive temper of the Egyptians (ibid.); (4) the rise of a second wind (Exodus 15:9); (5) the consequent return of the waters; and (6) the submerging of the host by them. The second stanza is considerably longer than the first, consisting of twelve, whereas the first consists of only seven, lines.
(6) Thy right hand.--Here is a second anthropomorphism, following naturally on the first, and occuring in the later Scriptures frequently, though now used for the first time.
Hath dashed in pieces.--Rather, dashes in pieces. The verb is in the future, but is a future of continuance.
Thou hast overthrown . . . --Heb., thou overthrowest them that rise up against thee; thou sendest forth thy wrath: it consumeth them like stubble.
The blast of thy nostrils.--The "east wind" of Exodus 14:21. As a physical effect, the gathering together of the waters, is ascribed to the "blast," we must understand a physical cause. Otherwise, God's wrath might be meant, as in Job 4:9. . . .
Pulpit Commentary
Verses 6-18. - Between verses 5 and 6, Miriam's chorus was probably interposed "Sing ye unto the Lord," etc. Then began the second strophe or stanza of the ode.
