I heard myself say it always starts with rebellion, followed by dissatisfaction, which gives way to hope. Hope is one of those things that can link our past, present, and our future.</p> <p>In 2003, PRX was founded with a vision to revolutionize the way we create, distribute, and consume audio content. We set out on this journey with a few pioneers who dared to dream big, and with the support and dedication of our ever-growing community of creators, producers, listeners, and supporters, we have transformed that dream into a reality.</p> <p>Over the past year, PRX has paved the way for:</p> <ul> <li><b>Diverse and Impactful Content.</b> We have been at the forefront of curating and distributing diverse, thought-provoking, and entertaining content that has captivated audiences around the world.</li> <li><b>Impactful Partnerships.</b> We believe that the return on relationships is often greater than the return on investments. This March, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced plans to turn San Quentin — the facility at the center of the podcast — into a Norwegian-inspired rehabilitation center. Closer to home, <em>Ear Hustle</em> began a partnership with the California Institution for Women, incorporating the voices and unique experiences of incarcerated women into recent and upcoming seasons. <em>Ear Hustle</em> also <a href="https://www.earhustlesq.com/episodes/2023/2/22/welcome-home-new-york" target="_blank"><span>celebrated the release</span></a> of Rahsaan “New York” Thomas, who began serving as co-host from inside San Quentin State Prison in 2019. <div class="content-arrow-down"></div> <div class="content"> <p>“I tell people that I turned on public radio and never turned it off. What I found was a wealth of information, knowledge, music, and entertainment coming to me from one place on my radio dial. I was so excited to contribute to my first fundraising campaign! I got a bumper sticker, which I proudly displayed on my 1978 Honda Accord.</p> <p>How I missed public radio when I moved to a small town in Italy. The first Gulf War started and Radio Free Europe was the only English language broadcast. CNN was new, and its television reports were overdubbed in Italian. I couldn’t even get an English language newspaper on a daily basis. Later, I lived in Hong Kong and visited as many countries in Asia as I could. Google was brand new then, but it was still hard to get the news I craved from home and other parts of the world.</p> <p>When I moved back to the US, I turned on my radio and found <a href="https://theworld.org" target="_blank"><span><em>The World</em><span></a>. How refreshing to hear about the countries where I’d lived! No other news source follows international news like <em>The World</em>. Once you’ve lived extensively in other countries, your understanding and interest in global news is forever altered and heightened. PRX is also the home of some of my favorite shows: <a href="https://themoth.org" target="_blank"><span><em>The Moth Radio Hour</em><span></a>, <a href="https://thisamericanlife.org" target="_blank"><span><em>This American Life</em><span></a>, <a href="https://revealnews.org" target="_blank"><span><em>Reveal</em></span></a>, <a href="https://www.ted.com/about/programs-initiatives/ted-talks/ted-talks-audio" target="_blank"><span><em>TED Talks Daily</em></span></a>.</p> <p>Following the evolution of PRX as a provider of broadcast programs as well as a myriad of excellent podcasts has enriched my life. I can say without a doubt that attending <a href="https://www.prx.org/ambassador-council" target="_blank"><span>PRX Ambassador Council</span></a> events has always been a highlight of my year. Scintillating, engaging, and thought-provoking. I always come away with insights, new ideas, and a deeper understanding of the issues we face today.</p> <p>And I know I will <a href="https://www.prx.org/shows" target="_blank">keep listening</a> to the PRX podcast portfolio. As part of the Massachusetts Storytelling Collaborative, PRX hosted <a href='https://www.podcastgarage.org/events/https/wwweventbritecom/e/the-cookout-tickets-643260979907' target='_blank'><span>The Cookout</span></a>, a live storytelling event with Aeronaut Allston. In December and April, the makers of “<a href='https://www.ttbook.org/series/going-for-broke' target='_blank'><span>Going for Broke</span></a>,” a special series from PRX's <em><a href='https://www.ttbook.org/' target='_blank'><span>To the Best of Our Knowledge</span></a></em> and the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, connected with listeners for panel discussions in Boston and at KQED. In May, Hana Baba and Leila Day of <em><a href='https://thestoop.org' target='_blank'><span>The Stoop</span></a></em> podcast met with Glynn Washington of <em><a href='https://snapjudgment.org/' target='_blank'><span>Snap Judgment</span></a></em> for a live taping on topics ranging from their journeys navigating the podcasting and media industries, to what it means to tell Black stories today. At our Maker Mingle workshop, we explored scoring for the iconic <em><a href='https://www.thisamericanlife.org/' target='_blank'><span>This American Life</span></a></em>.<p>As studios, training facilities, and event spaces, the Garages are expanding capacity to help new creators break into audio — whether that be prepping new storytellers for a debut with <em><a href='https://themoth.org/' target='_blank'><span>The Moth</span></a></em> or getting their stories aired on KQED. Development (formerly Training) team headed to Nairobi for the inaugural <a href="https://africamediafestival.com/" target="_blank"><span>Africa Media Festival</span></a> in February, hosted by <a href="https://barazalab.com/" target="_blank"><span>Baraza Media Lab</span></a>. PRX held a Podcasting Hackathon with more than 40 media and technology professionals from across East Africa, where participants ideated and prototyped solutions to challenges facing podcasting, audio distribution, and accessibility in a regional context.</p> <p>On the sidelines of the festival, PRX hosted a <a href="https://medium.com/prxofficial/prx-to-host-pop-up-podcast-garage-experience-in-nairobi-kenya-c4bf14bf3950" target="_blank"><span>Pop-up Podcast Garage</span></a> at Baraza, where attendees participated in live workshops from PRX and our partners, including Hana Baba and Leila Day — the producers behind Radiotopia’s <em><a href="https://www.thestoop.org/" target="_blank"><span>The Stoop</span></a></em> — and Johannesburg-based journalism and audio nonprofit <a href="https://childrensradiofoundation.org/" target="_blank"><span>Radio Workshop</span></a>. The workshops covered topics, including audience-first podcast design, storytelling, and interview skills. PRX also teamed up with Public Media for All for a day of education in support of equity in public media. Knight Foundation.
