After being called in by friend <a href="/people/477/000044345/">Robert Wyatt</a> to assist with some drum tracks for <a href="/people/311/000044179/">Daevid Allen</a>, Pip ended up becoming one of the founding members of <a href="/music/115/000038998/">Gong</a>, providing the needed cohesion to allow the band to assume fully active status. His involvement lasted only through the recording of first album, <i>Camembert Electrique</i>, but the association of his name with Gong has continued ever since.<p> After Gong, Pyle helped to found another band which became <a href="/music/328/000035223/">Hatfield and the North</a> just prior to the enlistment of keyboardist <a href="/people/563/000044431/">Dave Stewart</a>. Hatfield put together two albums of challenging and varied music before dissolving; Stewart and guitarist <a href="/people/660/000044528/">Phil Miller</a> then went on to form <a href="/music/329/000035224/">National Health</a> with Pyle acting initially as just a temporary participant. Eventually he allowed himself to be drafted into full-time service, and continued thus for the remainder of the band's existence.<p> During his tenure with National Health, Pyle worked concurrently with several short-lived bands, such as the jazz combo <i>Soft Heap</i>. After Health, he took part in Phil Miller's band <a href="/music/566/000044434/">In Cahoots</a> and also formed his own band, <i>Equip'Out</i> with girlfriend Sophia Domancich; he remained active with both of these bands -- and several others besides -- throughout the 1980s. 1990 saw his first participation with Gong in twenty years for a televised reunion concert, and by 1992 he was again a full-time touring member of the band.<p> In 1998, after seven years of recording, Pip Pyle finally released his first solo endeavor, appropriately named <i>The Seven Year Itch</i>.
