End on a high with a flutter on The Queen Alexandra Stakes, the longest race of the week, which stretches two miles and six furlongs.</p> <h3>The heritage</h3> <p>Ascot’s history dates back to 1711 when Queen Anne, while out riding, spotted that a stretch of land at East Cote looked promising as a racecourse, where horses could “gallop at full stretch”. On 11 August that year, Her Majesty’s Plate was run, worth 100 guineas – just under £20,000 in today’s money.</p> <p>Ascot quickly became a main social event of the court calendar and has remained as such for the past 300 years. What is now known as Royal Ascot started with The Gold Cup, Ascot’s oldest surviving race, in 1807. Winners to this day still receive a gold trophy, created by Garrard, which is theirs to take home and cherish.</p> <h3>The fashion</h3> <p>Royal Ascot is as much about the high fashion as it is the racing, and it’s the perfect opportunity to dress to impress.
