And Achish<MH397> said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, &#8220;Know<MH3045> for<MH3045> certain<MH3045> that you will go<MH3318> out<MH3318> with me in the camp<MH4264>, you and your men<MH376>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Achish<MH397>, &#8220;Very<MH3651> well<MH3651>, you will learn<MH3045> what<MH834> your servant<MH5650> can do<MH6213a>.&#8221; So Achish<MH397> said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, &#8220;<i>Then</i> I will assuredly<MH3651> make<MH7760> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>my bodyguard<MH8104, 7218> for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>life<MH3605, 3117>!&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Now Samuel<MH8050> was dead<MH4191>, and all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> had mourned<MH5594> him and buried<MH6912> him in Ramah<MH7414>, his own city<MH5892b>. And Saul<MH7586> had removed<MH5493> the mediums<MH178> and spiritists<MH3049> from the land<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So the Philistines<MH6430> assembled<MH6908> and came<MH935> and camped<MH2583> in Shunem<MH7766>; and Saul<MH7586> gathered<MH6908> all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> together, and they camped<MH2583> in Gilboa<MH1533>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>When Saul<MH7586> saw<MH7200> the camp<MH4264> of the Philistines<MH6430>, he was<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> and his heart<MH3820> trembled<MH2729> greatly<MH3966>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So Saul<MH7586> inquired<MH7592> of the LORD<MH3068>, but the LORD<MH3068> did not answer<MH6030a> him, either<MH1571> in dreams<MH2472>, or<MH1571> by the Urim<MH224>, or<MH1571> by the prophets<MH5030>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> said<MH559> to his servants<MH5650>, &#8220;Find<MH1875> for me a woman<MH802> who is a medium<MH1172, 178>, so that I may go<MH1980> to her and inquire<MH1875> of her.&#8221; And his servants<MH5650> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, there is a woman<MH802> who is a medium<MH1172, 178> at En-dor<MH5874>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> disguised<MH2664> himself by putting<MH3847> on<MH3847> different<MH312> clothes<MH899b>, and went<MH1980>, he and two<MH8147> men<MH376> with him, and they came<MH935> to the woman<MH802> by night<MH3915>; and he said<MH559>, &#8220;Consult<MH7080> the spirit<MH178> for me, please<MH4994>, and bring<MH5927> up<MH5927> for me <i>the one</i> whom<MH834> I shall <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>name<MH559> for you.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But the woman<MH802> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, you know<MH3045> what<MH834> Saul<MH7586> has done<MH6213a>, that he has eliminated<MH3772> the mediums<MH178> and spiritists<MH3049> from the land<MH776>. Why<MH4100> are you then setting<MH5367> a<MH5367> trap<MH5367> for my life<MH5315>, to bring<MH4191> about<MH4191> my death<MH4191>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So Saul<MH7586> swore<MH7650> an<MH7650> oath<MH7650> to her by the LORD<MH3068>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;As the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, no<MH518> punishment<MH5771> shall come<MH7136a> upon<MH7136a> you for this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then the woman<MH802> said<MH559>, &#8220;Whom<MH4310> shall I bring<MH5927> up<MH5927> for you?&#8221; And he said<MH559>, &#8220;Bring<MH5927> up<MH5927> Samuel<MH8050> for me.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>When the woman<MH802> saw<MH7200> Samuel<MH8050>, she cried<MH2199> out<MH2199> with a loud<MH1419> voice<MH6963>; and the woman<MH802> spoke<MH559> to Saul<MH7586>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Why<MH4100> have you deceived<MH7411b> me? For you are Saul<MH7586>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to her, &#8220;Do not be<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a>; but what<MH4100> do you see<MH7200>?&#8221; And the woman<MH802> said<MH559> to Saul<MH7586>, &#8220;I see<MH7200> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>divine<MH430> being<MH430> coming<MH5927> up<MH5927> from the earth<MH776>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>He said<MH559> to her, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>How<MH4100> does he appear<MH8389>?&#8221; And she said<MH559>, &#8220;An old<MH2205> man<MH376> is coming<MH5927> up<MH5927>, and he is wrapped<MH5844a> in a robe<MH4598>.&#8221; Then Saul<MH7586> knew<MH3045> that it was Samuel<MH8050>, and he bowed<MH6915> with his face<MH639> to the ground<MH776> and paid<MH2331c> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>homage<MH2331c>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559> to Saul<MH7586>, &#8220;Why<MH4100> have you disturbed<MH7264> me by bringing<MH5927> me up<MH5927>?&#8221; Saul<MH7586> replied<MH559>, &#8220;I am<MH6887a> very<MH3966> distressed<MH6887a>, for the Philistines<MH6430> are waging<MH3898a> war<MH3898a> against me, and God<MH430> has abandoned<MH5493> me and no<MH3808> longer<MH5750> answers<MH6030a> me, either<MH1571> through<MH3027> prophets<MH5030> or<MH1571> in dreams<MH2472>; therefore I have called<MH7121> you, so that you may let<MH3045> me know<MH3045> what<MH4100> I should do<MH6213a>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559>, &#8220;But why<MH4100> ask<MH7592> me, since the LORD<MH3068> has abandoned<MH5493> you and has become<MH1961> your enemy<MH6145>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> has done<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>just<MH3512c> as He spoke<MH1696> through<MH3027> me; for the LORD<MH3068> has torn<MH7167> the kingdom<MH4467> from your hand<MH3027> and given<MH5414> it to your neighbor<MH7453>, to David<MH1732>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> you did not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>obey<MH8085, 6963> the LORD<MH3068> and did not execute<MH6213a> His fierce<MH2740> wrath<MH639> on Amalek<MH6002>, so<MH5921, 3651> the LORD<MH3068> has done<MH6213a> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697> to you this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Furthermore, the LORD<MH3068> will also<MH1571> hand<MH5414, 3027> Israel<MH3478> along<MH5973> with<MH5973> you over<MH5414> to the Philistines<MH6430>; so tomorrow<MH4279> you and your sons<MH1121> <i>will be</i> with me. Indeed<MH1571>, the LORD<MH3068> will hand<MH5414, 3027> the army<MH4264> of Israel<MH3478> over<MH5414> to the Philistines<MH6430>!&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> immediately<MH4116> fell<MH5307> full<MH4393> length<MH6967> to the ground<MH776> and was<MH3372a> very<MH3966> afraid<MH3372a> because<MH4480> of Samuel&#8217;s<MH8050> words<MH1697>; there was no<MH3808> strength<MH3581b> in him either<MH1571>, because<MH3588> he had eaten<MH398> no<MH3808> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>food<MH3899> all<MH3605> day<MH3117> and all<MH3605> night<MH3915>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>The woman<MH802> came<MH935> to Saul<MH7586> and saw<MH7200> that he was utterly<MH3966> horrified<MH926>, and she said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, your servant<MH8198> has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>obeyed<MH8085, 6963> you, and I have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>taken<MH7760> my life<MH5315> in my hand<MH3709> and have listened<MH8085> to your words<MH1697> which<MH834> you spoke<MH1696> to me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So now<MH6258> you too<MH1571>, please<MH4994> listen<MH8085> to the voice<MH6963> of your servant<MH8198>, and let me serve<MH7760, 6440> you a piece<MH6595> of bread<MH3899>, and eat<MH398> <i>it,</i> so that you will have<MH1961> strength<MH3581b> when<MH3588> you go<MH1980> on <i>your</i> way<MH1870>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But he refused<MH3985> and said<MH559>, &#8220;I will not eat<MH398>.&#8221; However, his servants<MH5650> together<MH1571> with the woman<MH802> urged<MH6555> him, and he listened<MH8085> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>them. So he got<MH6965> up<MH6965> from the ground<MH776> and sat<MH3427> on the bed<MH4296>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Now the woman<MH802> had a fattened<MH4770> calf<MH5695> in the house<MH1004>, and she quickly<MH4116> slaughtered<MH2076> it; then she took<MH3947> flour<MH7058>, kneaded<MH3888> it and baked<MH644> unleavened<MH4682> bread<MH4682> <i>from it.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/28-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>She then served<MH5066, 6440> <i>it</i> to Saul<MH7586> and his servants<MH5650>, and they ate<MH398>.
