GSS already has about 140 such installations, mostly in the Southeast, to quickly transmit emergency information. GSS Executive VP Matthew Straeb says the new government contract is “a real windfall for radio”, and a spur to getting the new-model FM chips into more devices. These chips won’t need a headset to function as the radio antenna as earlier models did. They are more sensitive, and also easier on a cell phone’s battery. America’s next-generation warning system is named IPAWS, for Integrated Public Alert and Warning System. Now the new deadline is Monday, January 11, 2010. The Commission says it is “in the process of conducting final testing of the form", which has yet to become available online. So far, it continues to require the use of FCC Registration Numbers for almost all holders of ownership interests, which means supplying a Social Security number. That has been controversial among many licensees. The new Form 323 is supposed to provide the agency with a better picture about the gender and racial makeup of its licensees in radio and other fields.
