Physical proximity leads to spontaneous interactions, working alone in your house doesn’t. When we’re all interacting by Teams, Zoom, etc. meetings have to be set up in advance. We don’t bump into each other in the hallway or the kitchen, or gather for spontaneous exchanges and to bounce ideas off each other. Sure, you can send a Slack message that might spark a conversation, but it’s equally likely that it will be missed or ignored. When people switch context from hour to hour, it benefits them to have everybody close at hand. When people need a distraction-free environment, it benefits them to work remotely. Back in the day, everybody showed up to the office, but only 20% moved up the food chain to "get ahead".
