src="/assets/594424/400x/7f844869_8a59_4a30_a893_5d00a999379djpg.jpg" alt="BLSA Fall Trip 2024"></p> <p>On October 22, Notre Dame Law School’s Black Law Students Association (BLSA) traveled to New York City to meet with several law firms, including Jones Day, Reed Smith, and Kelley Drye & Warren. They networked with managers and directors, actively exploring career paths and developing meaningful connections. BLSA members also gained insight into each law firm’s current DEI initiatives, further expanding their understanding of diversity efforts within the legal profession.</p> <p>“The BLSA Fall Break trip to NYC accomplished some key goals outlined in the Notre Dame BLSA Constitution. A part of ND BLSA’s mandate is to promote the academic and professional success of Black students, to promote the successful integration of Black students into the Notre Dame Law School community, and to assist in the recruitment, admission, and enrollment of Black students,” said BLSA president Nicholas Smith. “The trip aligned with BLSA’s mission by providing tremendous value for our attendees, a mix of 1Ls, 2Ls and 3Ls.”</p> <figure class="image image-left"><img src="/assets/594426/c57fc567_ea3a_466d_8ba8_8ca10ae26e90jpg.jpg" alt="BLSA Fall Trip at Jones Day" width="600" height="450"></figure> <p>The trip offered students the opportunity to witness the breadth and vigor of the Notre Dame Law School alumni network. They visited three top law firms in New York City over the course of two days. The Notre Dame Law alumni within these firms ranged from junior and senior associates to junior, senior, and managing partners.</p> <p>“Each firm extended the utmost hospitality to us during our visit, fashioning customized programming to accommodate our various legal interests and were as thrilled to host us as we were thrilled to be visiting,” Smith said.</p> <p>On October 24, BLSA hosted a recruitment event titled, “From Ambition to Admission,” at the City University of New York’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The event provided attendees with insights into the admissions process, academic programs, and resources available at Notre Dame Law School. Attendees also heard firsthand experiences from current Notre Dame Law students and alumni about their academic and professional journeys.</p> <p>The panel included John Jay alumni Nicholas Smith, president of BLSA and a second-year law student at Notre Dame; Tori Murry, a 1L representative and first-year law student at Notre Dame; Joshua Previl J.D. ‘22, associate at Connell Foley LLP; and Stephanie Johns, J.D. ‘23, judicial law clerk. Previl and Johns are also John Jay College alumni.</p> <p>Those in attendance included students from the John Jay Honors Program, John Jay Pre-Law Institute, John Jay Urban Male Initiative, My</p> <figure class="image image-right"><img src="/assets/594428/bd88bbda_e92c_4113_9444_4f5f8c427ba2_4_5005_c.jpeg" alt="BLSA fall trip at Reed Smith" width="480" height="360"></figure> <p>Brother’s Keeper Connect at John Jay, and the CUNY Black Male Initiative.</p> <p>“We chatted with students about the quality of the legal education, the experiential learning opportunities available, the law school application process and the Black student experience at Notre Dame Law School,” said Smith. “Our plan was to put Notre Dame on the radar of the current and next generation of talented black law school applicants and I think that plan was well executed! Mission accomplished!”</p> <p>Read the following reflections and key takeaways from Notre Dame Law students who attended BLSA’s impactful recruitment trip.</p> <hr> <p>1L Tori Murry, 1L Representative:</p> <p>"It's no secret that the legal field is severely underrepresented by Black attorneys, so I was delighted to be welcomed into big law firms and hear how they've executed plans to facilitate inclusion within their respective workplaces. Through affinity groups, formal mentorship programs, diversity scholarships, and firm-funded legal writing resources, it was exciting to see law firms turn the gears toward manifesting DEI in historically homogeneous spaces. Above all, I was most fulfilled when talking with BIPOC pre-law students at John Jay College to demystify the law school admissions process for them and give them insight into how rewarding law school is through my lens, as a Black woman. If I were to summarize the week in one sentence, it'd have to be through a montage of phrasing I heard across our law firm visits: 'Do not look for a space that you can fit into. Look for a space where you can bring your whole self.'"</p> <p>1L Matilda Koduah, 1L Representative:</p> <p>“Before going to New York, I knew so little about law firms, their cultures, and what to look for before settling on one. Spending time with the attorneys at the firms we visited over fall break made me realize each firm is truly different. They taught us, shared their experiences with us, and listened to our stories. Now, I feel so inspired and I believe in myself more. I know I am here because I belong. Even though I am applying to these firms, I am also assessing them just as they are assessing me.</p> <p>“The highlight for me was spending time with the Global Managing Partner of Reed Smith, Casey Ryan, an alumnus of Notre Dame Law School. She listened to our stories and also shared her experiences with us. It made me feel so special."</p> <p>2L Grace Kemgang, Admissions and ND BLSA Liaison:</p> <p>"Spending time in New York was an invigorating experience; the city has such a driving energy! I appreciated the warm reception provided by each law firm we visited. Both Reed Smith and Kelley Drye allowed my peers and me to envision the experience of practicing law in New York and witness their various approaches to diversity in their firms. I appreciated interacting with NDLS alumni in New York! Everyone was approachable, inviting, and provided valuable advice on being a young attorney."</p> <p>3L Brianna Ivy:</p> <p>"This trip has certainly been one of the highlights of my time at Notre Dame Law School. It was incredible to receive such individualized attention from firms and to be able to connect with so many new attorneys and recent NDLS graduates. Also, it was fun recruiting new applicants given how enthusiastic they were about Notre Dame.
