We decided to put this to work ourselves and update our original Firefox Extension and also create a new Google Chrome extension at the same time. In both cases, you can now Digg stories as you browse the web, without having to come back to the Digg site each time.

The new Chrome extension for PC packs a lot of basic features in a small footprint:

The Digg count for any URL is displayed to the right of the browser's address bar. Clicking this reveals the title and comment count for that URL, as well as the button to Digg it.
There are several simple ways to share any URL, including Twitter, Facebook, and email.
Note: Currently, Chrome only supports extensions for PCs - Mac support coming soon.

In the case of the Firefox extension, we made a bunch of improvements to the current version:

To save space, we moved the Digg count and Digg button to the navigation bar, so the toolbar doesn't have to be open for you to Digg stories.
The toolbar itself is shorter and we've added a keyboard shortcut (Cmd+Shift+E) to make it easy to show and hide it. This makes it really simple to check out the Digg story details for a URL and then close it when you're done.
We've made notifications of friends and popular story activity less intrusive by providing additional controls in the toolbar settings, such as notification thresholds and a smaller notification box.
Sharing via Twitter, Facebook, and email are easily done via the toolbar. You can also right-click on any page to generate a Digg short URL.

As always, we're looking for your suggestions and feedback so please use the feedback buttons in the extensions or contact us directly. Our hearts and thoughts are with all those who are suffering and helping in Haiti.

Thanks,

-Jay

Call for Questions: Digg is LIVE at the Golden Globes!

 by Aubrey Sabala on January 14, 2010 - 11:00pm

in

Company

Hey everyone -

What a week! Some sites also have Digg widgets that display their top stories as ranked by Digg. Two of the most recent publishers to add these types of integrations are CBS News and WSJ.com - who this week added the Digg widget to all their blogs (the ones that do not require a subscription to view).

You can check out the CBS integration here and the WSJ integration here.

We’re very pleased to see publishers of all sizes continue to adopt Digg as a standard for ranking their content. We’ve heard from some publishers that the Digg widgets get 3-5 times as many clicks as their own Most Viewed widgets (even when the Digg widget is at the bottom of the page and theirs is at the top). We’ve also heard from these publishers that they are seeing a lot more Digging activity on their stories when they put Digg buttons and widgets on their sites, with Digg often ranking as one of their top referrers of traffic.

The U.K.’s popular daily newspaper, the Telegraph shared with us that after they invested in a Digg integration on their site they saw traffic from Digg increase ten-fold; from 500k page views to over 5.5 Million page views per month. You can check out their widget here.

TIME Magazine’s site added buttons and widgets and saw twice as many homepage stories each month on Digg, with an associated boost in traffic of 164%. You can see their Digg integration here.

If you’ve got a site and want to integrate Digg, below are some great tools to check out. For buttons click here for widgets you can play with our widget generator or build a more custom one using our API.

Integrate the Digg Button

Add a Digg Widget

Digg API

Also, if you want to contact the Digg Business Development team, you can do so here. What started as a simple idea has certainly come a long way. From a vision of a new way to surface news, and a team of three, to 40+ million monthly visitors and 80+ passionate employees...well, suffice it to say that I'm very proud of what we've become.

There have been a lot of memorable moments over the years. From the Paris Hilton phone hacking incident to cracking the HD-DVD key, you guys have defined Digg and are the reason for our growth. To date, we've had over 14 Million stories submitted and Dugg by you.

So for today, our 5th birthday, we have a couple of things to celebrate and share.

First off, we're excited that Dec 4, 2009 is officially "Digg.com Day" in our home base of San Francisco. We are proud and humbled by this honor.

Also, as way to commemorate all of the great submissions over the past five years - and more to come - we've today launched Digg 365, a visualization of all of the blockbuster stories surfaced with your millions of Diggs. We worked with our friends at The Barbarian Group to provide an interactive, fun way to showcase the top ten stories on any given day, month or year. Today we are releasing a revamped API that allows developers to write/contribute data using OAuth, a feature that many developers have been eagerly anticipating. In this release, Digging and burying both stories and comments are now supported.

In addition to the revamped API, we focused extensively on usability and have included an updated API documentation section on Digg with more detail on each API method including code and response examples. Today's changes, as well as our updates this summer to the API license, give developers much more freedom to create (and profit from) great new applications off the Digg platform.

To help showcase some of the new functionality, we've created a reference app off the new API, a streamlined version of the Digg site called DiggLite, which can serve as a blueprint for any basic Digg-based application. It includes a river of the most recently popular stories, which can be Dugg and buried remotely, and the means of breaking things down by top-level topics. You can find it at digglite.com or download the source code on Github.

Initially, the ability to create applications that can write data will only be available for a limited number of beta testers. If you are interested in creating an application please send a brief description of what you are doing and Digg username to api [at] digg.com.

You may follow @diggapi on Twitter to be notified quickly of any status changes to the API, including any issues or downtime information.

Stay tuned for more announcements about the API, including the ability to submit new stories and comments, as well as updates on the new apps being created by partners such as Boxee and other developers that catch our eye. We look forward to your feedback!

story.digg() on!
- Jeff

<script
