It is frequently used to represent power and authority. In the ancient Near East, lions were considered the kings of the animal kingdom, and their imagery was often used in royal iconography. The lion's characteristics are used metaphorically to describe the tribe of Judah, from which King David and ultimately Jesus Christ descended (<a href="/genesis/49-9.htm">Genesis 49:9-10</a>).
