Nous proposons de mener la réflexion depuis les Suds, en tant qu’espaces que l’on tend à identifier notamment par la position d’infériorité qu’ils occuperaient dans des relations de pouvoir d’ordre historique, culturel, économique en contexte colonial ou postcolonial. We propose to conduct this reflection from the perspective of the Global South, as spaces that are often identified, notably, by the subordinate position they are deemed to occupy within historical, cultural, and economic power relations in colonial or postcolonial contexts. Glissant imagine en effet les profonds comme un grand réseau souterrain au sein duquel tous les volcans de la Caraïbe seraient reliés « par des sortes de coulées de lave qui sont les autoroutes de leur puissance et de leur débordement ». Sous la surface du monde se concentrerait au c&oelig;ur de la matière une force susceptible de faire bouger les lignes et de remettre en cause les hiérarchies en établissant » par dessous » « le lien entre tous les ici ».</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">Suivre les coulées de lave qui traversent, selon Glissant, les profonds, invite à penser depuis les souterrains une forme alternative de pouvoir qui ne chercherait pas à s’imposer au monde. Il travaillerait plutôt à l’innerver de manière à faire circuler et rayonner sa présence depuis son épaisseur même. Si elle se déploie depuis l’inframonde géologique ou symbolique d’une position de subalterne, la puissance souterraine, à notre sens, n’entend en aucun cas se dissimuler dans l’ombre des sous-sols pour exister et pour agir en sous-main. Elle revendique au contraire sa présence et la rend visible. Contre la verticalité écrasante du monument, arc de triomphe, colonne ou palais dressé à la gloire du conquérant, elle inaugurerait pour ce faire un autre mode du monumental qui se diffuserait dans les lieux, dans la matière, dans les actions, dans les vies humaines ou non-humaines qu’elle irrigue et qu’elle met en relation.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">Il s’agira dès lors, au cours de cette journée d’étude, d’interroger les modalités selon lesquelles pourrait s’exercer et s’incarner une puissance souterraine qui se refuserait à établir une domination que ce soit à travers ses actes ou à travers les signes qui la matérialisent. Celui-ci semble tout d’abord trouver une traduction dans l’action politique qui se déploie en contrepoint à une autorité dominante. On pourra notamment interroger les formes proprement souterraines que revêt un tel contre-pouvoir, qu’il soit amené à agir clandestinement ou à investir des lieux effectivement souterrains pour se fédérer. On peut à cet égard penser par exemple à la résistance à l’autorité coloniale qui se déploie à travers un réseau de caves et de galeries qui s’étend sous une ville imaginaire évoquant Alger dans le roman <em>Qui se souvient de la mer</em> de l’écrivain algérien Mohamed Dib. De même, dans <em>Black Sunlight</em>, le romancier zimbabwéen Dambudzo Marechera situe le siège d’un mouvement anarchiste dans une grotte immense creusée au c&oelig;ur d’une montagne. En effaçant l’énonciateur, les souterrains seraient des lieux d’intensification de l’énonciation. Celle-ci y gagnerait en intensité et en force politique au point de devenir une interpellation à l’empire venue des profonds. La puissance qui s’exprime depuis les souterrains aurait donc bien vocation à se faire entendre, à jaillir sous forme d’éclat pour court-circuiter les différents niveaux de la domination.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">L’idée d’une puissance souterraine à l’ampleur monumentale nous semble dans un second temps pouvoir se comprendre sur un plan plus métaphysique. Il s’agirait dans ce cas de s’intéresser aux cosmogonies autochtones qui investissent les sous-sols d’une vie suprahumaine. Que l’on pense aux esprits cachés sous les routes du Nigeria, qui menacent d’avaler les voyageurs, à Mami Wata, qui habite les eaux profondes du continent africain, ou encore à la figure diabolique de Supay, qui rôde dans les mines de fer boliviennes, les profondeurs des territoires sont des lieux imprégnés par la force des êtres divins qui y règnent selon les croyances locales. Leur pouvoir remonte jusqu’à la surface où il se manifeste par des actions souvent spectaculaires qui nourrissent l’imaginaire politique, littéraire et artistique. Reconnaître l’intense présence des forces occultes qui agissent depuis l’inframonde donne ainsi l’occasion d’inverser le geste de sécularisation des sous-sols qui, comme l’analyse Mohamad Amer Méziane dans son récent essai <em>Des empires sous la terre</em>, a permis leur exploitation minière à la période coloniale et a contribué à la domination des sociétés s’étendant au-dessus d’eux en niant la réalité de leurs entités spirituelles.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">L’imaginaire glissantien d’une énergie vitale intense qui animerait les profonds, espace en relation par excellence, invite enfin selon nous à questionner plus largement les rapports qu’entretiennent les différentes formes du vivant et du non-vivant. Les mondes souterrains, conçus comme le lieu où s’exprime une puissance mouvante libérée de la volonté de domination, permettraient de développer l’idéal d’un écosystème au sein duquel les entités humaines et non-humaines interagiraient en dehors de tout rapport de supériorité ouvrant la voie à une possible exploitation, tel que le définit par exemple l’écologue Jacques Tassin dans <em>Pour une écologie du sensible</em>. Glissant imagines the deep as a vast subterranean network in which all the Caribbean volcanoes are linked « by streams of lava, which are the highways of their power and overflow ». Beneath the surface of the world, a force would be concentrated at the core of matter, capable of shifting boundaries and challenging hierarchies by establishing « from below » the connection between all « here ».</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-US"> Following the lava flows that, according to Glissant, traverse the depths invites one to conceive an alternative form of power originating from the underground, one that does not seek to impose itself upon the world. Instead, it works to invigorate the world in such a way that its presence circulates and radiates from its very thickness. If it unfolds from the geological or symbolic underworld of a subaltern position, underground power, in our view, does not seek to hide in the shadows of the subsoil in order to exist and act covertly. On the contrary, it claims its presence and makes it visible. In opposition to the crushing verticality of monuments—triumphal arches, columns, or palaces erected in glory of the conqueror—it would inaugurate another mode of the monumental that would diffuse into places, materials, actions, and into the lives, both human and non-human, that it nourishes and connects.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-US"> Thus, during this conference, we will aim to question the modalities through which an underground power could be exercised and embodied, one that refuses to establish domination, whether through its actions or through the signs that materialize it. One could examine the specifically subterranean forms that such counter-power may take, whether it is compelled to act clandestinely or to occupy actual underground spaces in order to unite. In this regard, one might think, for example, of the resistance to colonial authority that unfolds through a network of caves and galleries extending beneath an imaginary city resembling Algiers, as described in the novel <em>Qui se souvient de la mer</em> by Algerian writer Mohamed Dib. Similarly, in <em>Black Sunlight</em>, Zimbabwean novelist Dambudzo Marechera locates the headquarters of an anarchist movement within a vast cave dug into the heart of a mountain. By erasing the speaker, underground spaces become places of intensification of enunciation. In these spaces, the enunciation gains in intensity and political force, to the point of becoming an address to the empire originating from the depths. The power expressed from the underground would therefore be aimed at making itself heard, bursting forth in a flash to short-circuit the various levels of domination.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-US"> The idea of an underground power of monumental scope seems, secondly, to be understood on a more metaphysical level. In this case, the focus would be on indigenous cosmogonies that invest the underground with a supra-human life. Whether considering the spirits hidden beneath the roads of Nigeria, who threaten to swallow travelers, Mami Wata, who inhabits the deep waters of the African continent, or the demonic figure of Supay, who haunts the Bolivian iron mines, the depths of these territories are places imbued with the power of divine beings who reign there according to local beliefs. Their power reaches the surface, where it is manifested in often spectacular actions that fuel the political, literary, and artistic imagination. Recognizing the intense presence of occult forces acting from the underworld thus offers an opportunity to reverse the process of secularization of the subsoil, which, as Mohamad Amer Méziane analyzes in his recent essay <em>Des empires sous la terre</em>, enabled their mining exploitation during the colonial period and contributed to the domination of societies above them by denying the reality of their spiritual entities.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-US"> Finally, the Glissantian imaginary of an intense vital energy that animates the deep—an exceptional space of relation—invites us to more broadly question the relationships between different forms of the living and the non-living. Underground worlds, conceived as spaces where a shifting power liberated from the will to dominate is expressed, would allow for the development of the ideal of an ecosystem in which human and non-human entities interact outside of any hierarchical relationship opening the door to potential exploitation, as defined by the ecologist Jacques Tassin in <em>Pour une écologie du sensible</em>. In this view, it would be the ecological model itself through which the living is conceived that would constitute a subterranean monument, one whose architecture abolishes any form of hierarchy
