In it, screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan and director Steven Spielberg sit down with executive producer George Lucas, who originally conceived the story about a swaggering adventurer called, initially, Indiana Smith.<p>At the outset, Lucas lays out his vision. It is the blueprint for what would later become Harrison Ford’s performance as Indiana Jones:</p><p>“He is an archaeologist and an anthropologist. A Ph.D. He’s a doctor, he’s a college professor. What happened is, he’s also a sort of rough and tumble guy. But he got involved in going in and getting antiquities. Sort of searching out antiquities. And it became a very lucrative profession so he, rather than be an archaeologist, he became sort of an outlaw archaeologist. He really started being a grave robber, for hire, is what it really came down to. And the museums would hire him to steal things out of tombs and stuff.”</p><p>Lucas doesn’t beat around the bush: “Essentially he’s a bounty hunter. … Anything that’s quasi-legal, or amorphous, he’ll do.”</p><div class="s2nPlayer k-wQoDAMss" data-type="float" data-s2n-api="dfm_stn_player_script_id_wQoDAMss"></div><script> function dfm_stn_player_script_id_wQoDAMss( getS2NApiForPlayer ) { if( typeof window.MNGAuthentication !== 'undefined' ){ const s2nApi = getS2NApiForPlayer( document.querySelector('.k-wQoDAMss') ); s2nApi.float = ! window.MNGAuthentication.isUserSubscriber(); } }</script><p>Here’s what happens when you ask a legitimate archaeologist about the above job description: “Well, Indiana Jones kind of sucks as an archaeologist!” That’s William Parkinson, an archaeologist at the Field Museum and the University of Illinois at Chicago, who will be offering some real-life perspective at Sunday’s screening of the film at the Music Box Theatre.</p><p>“What I intend to do is talk briefly before the show, sort of give a brief introduction to the field of archaeology: Here are some things to look for, some things to think about,” he explained. “And then largely a Q&A after the movie.”</p><script id="95f79a6bddcf4e4eb895c63f57e7df4c"> (new Image()).src = 'https://capi.connatix.com/tr/si?token=fa8632bf-0eb6-4c47-8b84-b4278343aedb&cid=38d5daa3-18ac-4ee1-a905-373c67622f25'; cnx.cmd.push( function() { cnx( { playerId: "fa8632bf-0eb6-4c47-8b84-b4278343aedb" } ).render( "95f79a6bddcf4e4eb895c63f57e7df4c" ); } );</script><p>Whenever a film or TV show portrays a profession you actually work in, who doesn’t roll their eyes at the inaccuracies? Parkinson is sensitive to this. He doesn’t intend to be a buzz kill.</p><p>“The tendency for academics is to go in and be Debbie Downer: <em>“This isn’t actually how it works!” </em>I think you <em>can</em> do some of that, but in a fun way. The fact of the matter is, people are coming because they love the movie and they’re excited about it and they don’t want to get beaten over the head with a bunch of academic boringness.”</p><div class="dfp-ad dfp-cube_article" id="div-gpt-ad-cube_article" style="visibility:hidden"> <div class="htlad-cube_article" data-unit="chicagotribune.com/things-to-do/movies/cube_article" data-targeting=""></div> </div><p>So what does the film get wrong, or at least exaggerate? “The treasure hunting and ripping things out of context to put them in a museum.” Parkinson said. “From that perspective ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ is way more honest because she’s just a tomb raider.”</p><p>No one just grabs an artifact and bolts, Indy-style.</p><p>“No! We excavate sites because we have a reason. You’re not going to get money if you say, ‘I want to go and collect objects!’ You get money because you say, ‘I’m interested in how early cities evolved.”</p><p>But was it different in the 1930s, when this movie is set? “Some of that may have existed. Although it’s less about looting — I mean, nobody is going to condone looting archaeological sites, which is really what we’re talking about in the case of just going in and hiring local people to show you where something is so you can grab it for a museum.</p><p>“But in the ’30s? I don’t know that it occurred. Even at the turn of the (last) century with the excavation of things like King Tut’s tomb, it was still done under the premise that you’re trying to learn about the past.”</p><p>OK. What about booby-trapped tombs and temples? “No, that’s wonderful, wonderful fiction. There are great myths about people who excavate these tombs getting sick or dying. But they are, by and large, myths.” There are no long-ago cleverly devised snares. Stuff is just buried, waiting for an archaeologist to brush away the soil.</p><p>Parkinson, whose specialty is European and eastern Mediterranean prehistory, runs projects in Greece and Hungary. This year he said he spent about two months in the field.</p><p>“We have a rule of thumb: For every hour of in the field excavation, you spend at least three or four hours in the lab documenting and analyzing. Trying to put it together as a narrative. Because what I tell my Intro to Archaeology class is, if you spend 20 years meticulously excavating an archaeological site and you never publish (your findings), then you’ve just spent 20 years looting. There’s no point! If you’re not publishing, you’re not any better than a tomb raider.”</p><p>The movie does get one thing right.</p><p>“One of the things I am going to show is that the scenes of actual excavation in Egypt — with the carts and the dozens of workmen in the desert — are not dissimilar to movies that we have of a guy named Henry Field, who was an archaeologist here in my department years ago in the 1920s. He was excavating a site in what is now Iraq, and we’ve got these silent movies that were taken on that (dig) and they look just like the scene in ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark.’ It’s pretty cool. They employed a lot of local workers to do the grunt work. I mean, child labor laws? Holy cow, it’s dozens of little kids carrying dirt across the site.”</p><p><a href="http://maddogmovies.com/almost/scripts/raidersstoryconference1978.pdf%20%20%22RAIDERS%20OF%20THE%20LOST%20ARK%22" target="_blank">Here’s Lucas again in that 1978 story meeting</a>, mapping out his vision of Indiana Jones:</p><p>“What I’m saying is, that character just would not fit in a college classroom or even as an archaeologist. He’s too much of a scruffy character to settle down. A playboy, or however you want to do it. He’s too much of a wise-guy, maybe that’s a better way to say it, to actually be a college professor. He really loves the stuff, but he became too cynical, he’s too much of a wise guy to fit into an academic situation, or even an archaeological situation. He’s really too much of an adventurer at heart.”</p><p>Parkinson has his own adventures, spending months out in the field pawing through layers of dirt. But: “A vast amount of my job is spent in front of my computer writing boring grant applications so people will give me money so I can meticulously dig archaeological sites,” he said.</p><p>“What I love about Indiana Jones is, despite all the historical inaccuracies and the mystical part of it, it makes people excited about the discipline. And if that gets a couple more kids in my Intro to Archaeology class, and then I can rope them into the science part, all the better.</p><p>“I was right in the sweet spot for that movie when it first came out. Like every other kid in rural Illinois, I would walk around and collect arrowheads. I kind of had glimmers that there was a past out there that I didn’t know about.”</p><p><em>“Raiders of the Lost Ark” screens at noon Sunday at the Music Box Theatre as part of its Cinema Science series. Go to <a href="musicboxtheatre.com" target="_blank">musicboxtheatre.com</a>.</em></p><p><strong>The Chicago Eight (Seven) on film</strong></p><p>South Side Projections is screening two films that were made “during or immediately after the infamous Chicago Eight (later Seven) conspiracy trial in the wake of the police riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention,” according to programmer Michael W. Phillips Jr. (no relation to the Tribune film critic). They are Richard Brick’s “The Conspiracy and the Dybbuk” (1971) and Kerry Feltham’s “The Great Chicago Conspiracy Circus” (1970). “These two films emphasize the farcical nature of the trial and reflect the tragicomic politics of the times,” Phillips said. Screening at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts. Go to <a href="soundopinions.org" target="_blank"><strong>soundopinions.org</strong></a>.</p><p><strong>Young Turk</strong></p><p>A documentary about Cenk Uygur, the political commentator and founder of the progressive media outlet TYT (aka The Young Turks, which includes podcasts and a YouTube channel) screens next week. “Mad as Hell” takes a look at the “tumultuous, at times hilarious, and altogether astonishing trajectory of The Young Turks’ founder … as he travels the path from unknown public access TV host to international phenom via the show’s YouTube outlet. The film also explores Uygur’s dedication to uncensored, truth-or-nothing journalism as it rankles the powers-that-be at MSNBC in a battle royale between new and old media.” It screens at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Regal City North Stadium 14, followed by Q&A with director Andrew Napier. Shot in Oak Park last year, the story is a meld of genres, including punk rock and romantic comedy, about a teenage ghost who haunts a home. (Cramer also stars as a police detective investigating said haunting.) It screens Friday and Sunday at the School of Rock Oak Park, followed by a Q&A with Cramer.
