href="https://www.canadianbiomassmagazine.ca/convertus-breaks-ground-on-east-gwillimbury-biofuel-plant/" taget="_blank">Convertus</a>, an organic waste processor based in London, Ont., will build the province’s first large-scale biofuel facility with liquid carbon capture technology. The East Gwillimbury project, set to open in 2027, will process organic waste via anaerobic digestion into biogas, and later, renewable natural gas. The RNG will offset fossil natural gas in local pipelines. The facility will process up to 165,000 tonnes of organic waste per year in its first phase and potentially scale up to 200,000 tonnes. Each year, the facility will generate between 250,000 and 350,000 gigajoules (GJ) of RNG, or enough to heat 5,000 homes. This funding will enable the GrowTEC facility to significantly expand and optimize RNG production, allowing for the processing of additional feedstocks and increased RNG production capacity. It is estimated that globally, 8-10% of total greenhouse gas emissions are a direct result of food waste. Canadians contribute to that global total, creating an estimated 50 million tonnes of food waste every year. Meanwhile, emissions from manure represent 20% of a farm’s carbon footprint.
