They are a backbone of the European Research Area (ERA), driving technology innovation and scientific excellence in many fields and addressing societal and industrial challenges.”

EIROforum is concerned about the reduction in funding for ERIs under Horizon Europe compared to Horizon 2020 and advocates for a substantial increase in the budget of the FP10 programme.

In addition, EIROforum suggests strengthening the future Research Infrastructure Programme in FP10 by

Integrating ERIs as a transversal programme across all pillars and clusters of FP10

Strengthening policy instruments to support both emerging and established research infrastructures

Continuing to support the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and the adoption of AI methodologies

Providing broad, flexible, and transnational access to infrastructures for curiosity-driven projects

Strengthening collaboration with European industry for technology transfer and co-development

Introducing new funding instruments for long-term support of technology development of advanced research infrastructure communities

Providing support to continuous training of young researchers and innovators

Research infrastructures promote integration with other key components of the Framework Programme and foster collaboration across different scientific domains. As repositories of scientific data and sources of innovation, ERIs also play an important role in training the next generation of researchers and are driving new applications and the development of AI and other emerging technologies. Adequate funding for ERIs in FP10 is therefore an important factor in keeping Europe at the forefront of scientific excellence, competitiveness, and technological sovereignty.

Read the complete EIROforum statement.

The post EIROforum calls for increase in funding and support for European research infrastructures appeared first on EIROforum.

12 young scientists receive EUCYS-Prizes donated by EIROforum

Spilios Vasilopoulos

News

EUCYS

At the European Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS), on Saturday 16 September, 12 young Scientists were honored with eight Special Donated Prizes sponsored by EIROforum.

The post 12 young scientists receive EUCYS-Prizes donated by EIROforum appeared first on EIROforum.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-175033" src="https://www.eiroforum.org/wp-content/uploads/eucys-2023-eiroforum-special-donated-prizes-winners-500x333.jpg" alt="Some of the winners of the EIROforum Special Donated Prizes, with EIROforum Coordination Group Chair Friederike Itzen from EuXFEL (1st from left), President of the EUCYS jury Mariya Lyubenova from ESO (2nd from right) and EUCYS jury member Estelle Mossou from ESRF (1st from right). What works for science’s grand challenges can empower society as well, as the basis for fact-based decision making.”

Andreas Kaufer, ESO

“EIROForum members operate complex scientific instruments and costly infrastructures. This conference is a great opportunity to share experiences in the use of new technologies such as ML and AI in this field and to discuss their potential for more effective, efficient, and sustainable solutions in scientific instrument control, operation and data production.”

Vincent Favre-Nicolin, ESRF

“All major research infrastructures are faced with ‘big data’ challenges – to process increasing amounts of data both faster and smarter, and to provide the results to users in the most efficient and durable way. The infrastructure, algorithmic and social aspects are very similar across all EIROforum members, and this conference will be an excellent opportunity to gain a wide overview.”

João Figueiredo, EUROFusion

“In modern science, the challenges of distributing, processing and analysing vast amounts of data is of paramount importance to optimise and fully profit from the research carried forward using the infrastructures of the largest scientific organisations. The sharing of the combined know-how of the EIROforum members in data science and the applications of artificial intelligence, used in telescopes and microscopes, in fusion reactors and space satellites, is certainly of great interest.”

Paolo Mutti, ILL

“AI and ML are everywhere nowadays, in our connected objects, telephones and even at the hospital. The benefit of these techniques have started to enter the scientific world as well, but their potential has still to be fully exploited. Great advantages can be achieved in the way scientists perform experiments and in the quantity and quality of information that can be extracted from the measured data. This EIROforum event is a great way to exchange practices between the different partners to move forward in exploring the new opportunities offered by AI.”

The post EIROforum hosts conference on grand challenges in AI and data science appeared first on EIROforum.

11 February: International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2022

Spilios Vasilopoulos

News

IDWGS

Today, on 11 February 2022, the members of EIROforum wish to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The post 11 February: International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2022 appeared first on EIROforum.

Today, on 11 February 2022, the members of EIROforum wish to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The Day was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in order to promote full and equal access and participation for women and girls in science. Today is an opportunity to celebrate the essential role that women and girls play in science and technology.

Here are some of the initiatives and work that EIROforum members wish to highlight, this 11 February:

CERN’s popular annual celebration of Women and Girls in Science continues in 2022. A number of Women in STEM professions will inspire young students with visits to local schools during the week of 7 to 11 February. Women scientists and engineers from CERN, EPFL, UNIGE, and LAPP form an impressive network of role models and, possibly, future colleagues to the next generation of women in science! For the adults, a screening of the feature film Picture A Scientist followed by a panel discussion will take place on 10 February at 8pm in the Globe at CERN. Registration and the live webcast to the panel is here.

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory launched LEAP, the Leadership and Excellence for Aspiring Postdocs programme, in 2021, with the objective of supporting women in their postdoctoral years to access leadership positions in academia. The programme comprised bespoke workshops, 1-to-1 coaching, mentoring from EMBL alumna, and action learning. By the end of the programme, the participants confirmed that their professional confidence, their leadership voice, their interpersonal skills, and their networks had been significantly enhanced. Many of the LEAP participants have already found positions as Group Leaders upon completion of the programme.

This year, ESA will select a new crew of European astronauts. Whilst 24% applicants were female, a larger share of 39% female candidates has been selected by the Agency for the second phase. As ESA prepares its team of future astronauts, Samantha Cristoforetti is training for her second mission on board the ISS scheduled for April 2022, when she will serve as Commander, marking a milestone for a female European astronaut.

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) reaffirms its commitment to advancing gender equality, diversity and inclusion and during this week has highlighted roles, career paths and day-to-day work of women at ESO on the ESOblog and on social media. In the framework of the agreement signed with UN Women in 2020, ESO has joined their Second Chance programme and started to train women living in Chile in key astronomical technical skills, which will allow them to expand their job opportunities.

The ESRF, the European Synchrotron, signed 2 company agreements with our Staff Representatives, one supporting the inclusion of disabled workers in the workplace 2020-2022, and one regarding the Gender equity plan 2021-2023. In addition, to guarantee equal opportunities to its staff, the ESRF has developed with universities and schools a pedagogical programme dedicated to young girls, in order to encourage them to pursue a career in science or technology.

EUROfusion and the other institutions of the fusion industry are together setting up a global framework to represent, support and promote women in fusion all around the world. To increase the number of females in leadership roles, EUROfusion is striving to include in each selection committee/panel at least one or two women.

ILL‘s comprehensive approach to gender equality, through the signing of a company agreement and its significant ‘Professional Equality Index’ results, supports a number of initiatives to ensure that processes, policies and systems provide equal opportunities for women to be recruited, to thrive in and achieve leadership roles.

European XFEL continues to strive for equal gender opportunities and supports female scientists and engineers to pursue their careers in STEM. On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we at the European XFEL want to declare our continuous efforts to attract and support female scientists and engineers and achieve a gender-balanced and diverse working environment. European XFEL participates in a mentoring program dynaMENT for female researchers in natural sciences to support female doctoral students and post-doctoral scientists in their career development. Furthermore, a girls day is organised annually to introduce European XFEL and its science to school girls to increase their interest in science at an early age.

To recognise these inspirational contributions, EIROforum members have reached out to the children in the lives of their staff, challenging them to tap into their artistic creativity to provide a drawing to celebrate the theme of ‘Women in Science’.

The response to our call was just as inspirational as the drawings themselves! The digital collage, above, has incorporated the young, creative contributions across the EIROforum membership to celebrate the day (the full-size drawings that were used in the digital collage, below).

We wish to thank all of our young artists for joining in the celebration of International Day of Women and Girls in Science!

href="https://www.eiroforum.org/about-eiroforum/members/">EIROforum (Europe’s eight largest intergovernmental scientific research organisations, including CERN, EMBL, ESA, ESO, ESRF, EUROfusion, European XFEL and ILL) and the US Department of Energy’s seventeen National Laboratories (Ames, Argonne, Brookhaven, Fermi, Idaho, Jefferson, Los Alamos, Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, NETL, NREL, Oak Ridge, Pacific Northwest, PPPL, SLAC, Sandia and Savannah River), met by videoconference ahead of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP26).

Sharing the same values, and convinced that science performs best through collaboration, the EIROforum’s directors and NLDC (comprised of directors from the US National Laboratories) affirmed their common commitment to unite science towards a sustainable and resilient global society and economy:

By stepping up their scientific collaboration on carbon-neutral energy and climate change

By sharing best practices to improve the climate sustainability and carbon footprint of Europe’s and US’s big science facilities

By sharing knowledge and fostering public engagement on clean energy and climate change research

The 2021 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP26), which will take place in a few days’ time in Glasgow, will be a pivotal moment to agree coordinated actions to align with the needs of a sustainable and resilient society.

The rapidly accelerating loss of biodiversity across the globe and the impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly visible in the form of outbreaks of zoonotic disease, and progressively extreme heat waves and storms, droughts and flooding.

Throughout history, fundamental research has been a source of scientific breakthroughs, leading to paradigm shifts that have had a profound impact on our lives. The COVID-19 pandemic has thrust science to the centre stage. Thanks to state-of-the-art scientific knowledge and exceptional global scientific collaborations, the development of vaccines to provide a path out of the coronavirus pandemic happened far more rapidly than expected. Therefore, on a complex and wide ranging issue like climate change, science has without any doubt a key role to play, and in particular at big science facilities, where we are constantly pushing forwards the frontiers of knowledge and technology to the highest levels of excellence and inventiveness.

From world-leading environmental science and bio-environmental engineering, geological research and Earth observation to the development of state-of-the-art materials, advanced particle detectors and accelerators, and new, clean energy sources, the research and datasets produced by Europe and United States’ big science laboratories provide a foundation on which to build innovative technologies and solutions that not only mitigate the impact of climate change, but also help us protect the Earth’s ecosystems, including the human populations around the world vulnerable to a wide array of environmental threats.

As Big Science facilities in Europe and United States, sharing the same values for scientific excellence to the benefit of humankind and our planet, we must act together to address the complex and pressing climate crisis that we are already seeing worldwide, but also to reduce the carbon footprint of our research activities.

These topics were at the heart of an online workshop, co-chaired by Doon Gibbs, Director of Brookhaven National Laboratory and Chair of the NLDC, and Francesco Sette, Director General of The European Synchrotron (ESRF) and Chair of EIROforum, and which included the directors and scientific experts from the eight EIROforum big science facilities and the seventeen DOE National Laboratories, through three round-tables:

Approaches to Decarbonization: “Reducing the carbon footprint of big science facilities in Europe”, and “Net Zero Carbon and Net Zero Labs”

Carbon-neutral energy and climate change research and technology at Big Science facilities

Fostering public engagement on clean energy and climate change research

Download the press statement as pdf

Agenda of the EIROforum – NLDC online event

EIROforum and NLDC in brief

The post Uniting science to address climate change appeared first on EIROforum.

EIROforum statement on the EU Pact for Research and Innovation

Spilios Vasilopoulos

News

Science policy

research infrastructures

The EIROforum members welcome the EC proposal for a Pact for Research and Innovation in Europe. Last year, despite significant slowdowns in global economic and social activity due to the pandemic, only a short, sharp reduction of -7.7% in carbon emissions was observed in Europe, compared to 2019. The impact of the coronavirus has captured much of our attention over the past year and in most parts of the world we are yet to restore day-to-day life. However, this has not diminished the threat that our planet faces from human activity, and the world must urgently focus its attention on the environmental challenges that remain to be solved. The rapidly accelerating loss of biodiversity across the globe and the impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly visible. In our cities, air pollution continues to threaten lives and demonstrates how closely the health of the environment is linked to human well-being.

Thanks to state-of-the-art scientific knowledge and exceptional research efforts, the development of vaccines to counter COVID-19 happened far more rapidly than expected, illustrating what can be achieved through global scientific collaboration, collective focus, and investment in research. A path out of the pandemic is in sight and as we emerge, we have an opportunity to exploit this same drive across society to fight the threats that our Earth is facing.

On the heels of the extraordinary achievements of life sciences research in mobilising to fight the pandemic, it is crucial to recognise how the scientific community is also tackling environmental challenges – conducting fundamental research that will equip us with the tools to halt the damage to our planet and find solutions to restore it. Through advanced monitoring and analysis of the natural world, we are advancing our capabilities to protect the environment every day. From world-leading environmental science, geological research and Earth observation to the development of state-of-the-art materials and new, clean energy sources, the research and datasets produced by the EIROforum communities give us a foundation on which to build technologies that not only mitigate the impact of climate change, but also help us protect the Earth’s ecosystems, including human populations around the world vulnerable to a wide array of environmental threats.

The members of EIROforum also recognise that there is work to be done closer to home. All EIROforum organisations are developing ways to minimise the environmental impact of their scientific research and associated activities. Such considerations will be especially important as it becomes possible for the global scientific community to travel and access our facilities again, and also more broadly with regards scientific meetings and conferences. The potential to contribute to solutions that improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and eliminate reliance on non-renewable sources, thus helping mitigate climate change, are strong factors in decisions now being made across all of our organisations.

In the year that the long-awaited COP26 climate change conference will take place, we encourage scientists around the world to continue drawing attention to the importance of sustainable research and to get involved with the mission of Earth Day 2021.

The Directors General of CERN, EMBL, ESA, ESO, ESRF, EUROfusion, European XFEL, and ILL.

The post EIROforum statement on Earth Day 2021 appeared first on EIROforum.
