Certes, nous le verrons, beaucoup reste à faire dans ce champ : de nombreuses zones grises demeurent et quelques mises en chantier sont à entreprendre. Force est toutefois d'admettre, constatant les multiples articles, livres, thèses, mémoires, etc., produits depuis plus de 100 ans sur des aspects entourant l'histoire de l'éducation en Acadie, que le bilan est dense. Que ce soit en raison de sa place centrale au sein du projet collectif acadien, en raison de sa proximité avec l'aspect linguistique -tout aussi déterminant de la référence acadienne -ou encore en raison de son importance au sein des sociétés démocratiques, le thème de l'éducation a été mis au coeur d'une production scientifique considérable. À la fin des années 1980, le Centre d'études acadiennes recense d'ailleurs plus de 300 titres traitant d'aspects relatifs à l'histoire de l'éducation en Acadie 2 , nombre d'autant plus significatif que le « Guide bibliographique » produit exclut les articles publiés dans les journaux qui, en Acadie, faute de revues, ont longtemps servi de tribunes pour diffuser les travaux des historiens. Enfin, il va sans dire que, depuis, le nombre d'études sur le sujet n'a fait que croître. 1 Que ce soit pour ses composantes idéologiques, économiques, politiques, sociales, culturelles, religieuses, matérielles, géographiques, organisationnelles, administratives et didactiques, l'histoire de l'éducation est l'un de ces vastes champs historiographiques difficiles à circonscrire. D'ailleurs, les associations qui ont fondé des revues dédiées au champ en donnent rarement une définition. Les comités de rédaction se contentent plutôt de souligner que leurs revues aspirent à couvrir « tous les aspects de l'éducation », et ce, dans une « visée multidisciplinaire ». En fait, la multitude de sujets qu'embrasse le champ s'avère caractéristique de son objet d'étude, comme quoi l'éducation se manifeste à la fois « comme un enjeu social, comme une composante de la croissance économique, comme une organisation nationale, comme une idée régulatrice et un projet de gouvernement ». Cette réalité fait en sorte que nous optons nous aussi dans ce texte pour la définition large de l'histoire de l'éducation, embrassant toutes ses composantes. These pageants also compensated for the near complete absence of Acadians in the history written by their Anglo-Protestant neighbours. Nova Scotia Acadians used religious and historical imagery to present themselves as actors and victors – as legitimate historical figures with a past worthy of notice and a present worthy of praise. In short, it allowed the communities to heal from the wounds of their past and turn toward a better, modern, progressive future.
