In biblical times, the east and west were often seen as symbolic of the vastness of the earth, representing all human endeavors and powers. The east, associated with the rising sun, often symbolized new beginnings or human efforts, while the west, where the sun sets, could represent the end of human endeavors. This phrase underscores the belief that human advancement is not determined by worldly powers or geographical locations but by divine will. This is consistent with other scriptures, such as <a href="/daniel/2-21.htm">Daniel 2:21</a>, which states that God "changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others."<p><b>nor out of the desert</b><br>The desert, or wilderness, in biblical literature often symbolizes desolation, testing, and a place devoid of human influence. It is a place where God’s provision and guidance are most evident, as seen in the Israelites' journey through the wilderness in Exodus. The mention of the desert here reinforces the idea that exaltation does not come from barren or desolate places, which could also symbolize human efforts that are devoid of divine blessing. This aligns with the biblical theme that God often chooses the unlikely and the humble to fulfill His purposes, as seen in the calling of Moses from the desert (Exodus 3) and John the Baptist's ministry in the wilderness (<a href="/matthew/3.htm">Matthew 3:1-3</a>).<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/p/psalmist.htm">Psalmist (Asaph)</a></b><br>- The author of <a href="/bsb/psalms/75.htm">Psalm 75</a>, Asaph, was a prominent Levite singer and seer in David's court, known for his role in leading worship and composing psalms.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/i/israel.htm">Israel</a></b><br>- The nation to whom the psalm was originally addressed, often seeking God's guidance and deliverance from their enemies.<br><br>3. <b><a href="/topical/e/east,_west,_desert.htm">East, West, Desert</a></b><br>- These geographical references symbolize the various directions from which people might expect help or promotion, emphasizing that true exaltation comes from God alone.<div class="vheading2">Teaching Points</div><b><a href="/topical/g/god_as_the_source_of_exaltation.htm">God as the Source of Exaltation</a></b><br>True promotion and honor come from God, not from human efforts or worldly sources. The recurrence also of parts of the verb "to lift up" in <a href="/context/psalms/75-4.htm" title="I said to the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:">Psalm 75:4-5</a>; <a href="/psalms/75-7.htm" title="But God is the judge: he puts down one, and sets up another.">Psalm 75:7</a>, makes in favour of taking <span class= "ital">harim </span>as part of the same verb here, instead of as a noun, "mountains." That the word <span class= "ital">midbar </span>(wilderness) might be used for "south," receives support from <a href="/acts/8-26.htm" title="And the angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south to the way that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza, which is desert.">Acts 8:26</a>.<p>Ewald thinks the four points of the compass should be completed by inserting a conjunction, and taking the "desert" and "mountains" to represent respectively the <span class= "ital">south </span>and <span class= "ital">north. </span>He then supplies the conclusion of the sentence from the following verse:--<p>"For neither from east nor west, . . . <div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/psalms/75.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 6.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.</span> So Hupfeld, Kay, Canon Cook, and the Revised Version Others suggest the meaning to be, "For it is not from the east, nor is it from the west, nor yet from the mountainous desert [that help cometh]." But the ellipse of the main idea is improbable. The address is to the enemies who threaten Israel, "Lift not up your horns - speak not proudly - for exaltation comes not from any earthly quarter - east, west, north, or south" ("north" being omitted, as sufficiently implied in the others); it is God alone who gives it, and he is not likely to give it to you." <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/psalms/75-6.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">For</span><br /><span class="heb">כִּ֤י</span> <span class="translit">(kî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunction<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3588.htm">Strong's 3588: </a> </span><span class="str2">A relative conjunction</span><br /><br /><span class="word">exaltation</span><br /><span class="heb">הָרִֽים׃</span> <span class="translit">(hā·rîm)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Hifil - Infinitive construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7311.htm">Strong's 7311: </a> </span><span class="str2">To be high actively, to rise, raise</span><br /><br /><span class="word">comes not</span><br /><span class="heb">לֹ֣א</span> <span class="translit">(lō)</span><br /><span class="parse">Adverb - Negative particle<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3808.htm">Strong's 3808: </a> </span><span class="str2">Not, no</span><br /><br /><span class="word">from east</span><br /><span class="heb">מִ֭מּוֹצָא</span> <span class="translit">(mim·mō·w·ṣā)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4161.htm">Strong's 4161: </a> </span><span class="str2">A place or act of going forth, issue, export, source, spring</span><br /><br /><span class="word">or west</span><br /><span class="heb">וּמִֽמַּעֲרָ֑ב</span> <span class="translit">(ū·mim·ma·‘ă·rāḇ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw, Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4628.htm">Strong's 4628: </a> </span><span class="str2">The west</span><br /><br /><span class="word">or</span><br /><span class="heb">וְ֝לֹ֗א</span> <span class="translit">(wə·lō)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particle<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3808.htm">Strong's 3808: </a> </span><span class="str2">Not, no</span><br /><br /><span class="word">out of the desert,</span><br /><span class="heb">מִמִּדְבַּ֥ר</span> <span class="translit">(mim·miḏ·bar)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4057.htm">Strong's 4057: </a> </span><span class="str2">A pasture, a desert, speech</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/psalms/75-6.htm">Psalm 75:6 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/psalms/75-6.htm">Psalm 75:6 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/psalms/75-6.htm">Psalm 75:6 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/psalms/75-6.htm">Psalm 75:6 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/psalms/75-6.htm">Psalm 75:6 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/psalms/75-6.htm">Psalm 75:6 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/psalms/75-6.htm">Psalm 75:6 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/psalms/75-6.htm">Psalm 75:6 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/psalms/75-6.htm">Psalm 75:6 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/psalms/75-6.htm">Psalm 75:6 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/psalms/75-6.htm">OT Poetry: Psalm 75:6 For neither from the east (Psalm Ps Psa.) </a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/psalms/75-5.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Psalm 75:5"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Psalm 75:5" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/psalms/75-7.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Psalm 75:7"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Psalm 75:7" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
