charts and data journalism — <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://atlas.qz.com/">Atlas</a>. Zachary Seward, Quartz&#8217;s executive editor, wrote about the new site and <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://qz.com/434425/atlas-the-new-home-for-charts-and-data/">how Quartz hopes it will grow</a>.</p> <blockquote><p>Atlas gives each of our charts its own home, along with a set of tools for interacting with them: You can now download the data behind our charts, embed our charts elsewhere on the web, grab an image of our charts, and of course share our charts on social media. They will look great regardless of whether you’re using a big screen or mobile device.</p></blockquote> <p>Users will find some native advertising on Quartz in the form of charts, Seward wrote. Along with the new site, Quartz also open sourced a new version of Chartbuilder. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/352627/quartz-on-new-home-for-data-viz-charts-are-our-cat-photos/" class="read-more">Read more</a></p></div> <div class="breadcrumbs"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/" title="View all posts in News">News</a> <span class="arrow-right">&rarr;</span> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/media-innovation/" title="View all posts in Media Innovation">Media Innovation</a></div> <dl class="article-tools"> <dt>Tools:</dt> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/352627/quartz-on-new-home-for-data-viz-charts-are-our-cat-photos/#disqus_thread" class="comments"><span class="dsq-postid" rel="352627 http://www.poynter.org/?p=352627">0 Comments</span></a></dd> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/352627/quartz-on-new-home-for-data-viz-charts-are-our-cat-photos/" class="permalink">Permalink</a></dd> <dd><!-- AddThis Button BEGIN --> <div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "> <a class="addthis_button_email" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/352627/quartz-on-new-home-for-data-viz-charts-are-our-cat-photos/" addthis:title="Quartz on new home for data viz: ‘Charts are our cat photos.’">Email</a> <a class="addthis_button_compact" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/352627/quartz-on-new-home-for-data-viz-charts-are-our-cat-photos/" addthis:title="Quartz on new home for data viz: ‘Charts are our cat photos.’">Share</a> </div> <script type="text/javascript" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741js_/http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#username=xa-4ccb31260be55b75"></script> <!-- AddThis Button END --></dd> </dl> </div> </div> <div id="post-352419" class="entry-content post-feature-secondary excerpt-2"> <div class="article excerpt"> <div class="image-right"><img width="160" height="106" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741im_/http://www.poynter.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/7860597_81bd39df6d_o-160x106.jpg" class="attachment-article-medium wp-post-image" alt="Photo by Sam Javanrouh/Flickr"/></div> <h2 class="article"> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/?post_type=post&amp;p=352419" title="Permalink to Why does local matter? I received dozens on why their local newspapers and public radio stations mattered.</p> <p>I’ve collected their answers, which I also sent out in my newsletter on June 2, below. If you work in a local newsroom and need a pick-me-up today, I highly recommend perusing the answers. It would also be an interesting question to ask your own audiences. We talk about the importance of local at journalism conferences — and with each other — but our audience also has very good ideas and articulate why they do (or don’t) rely on their local news. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/352419/why-does-local-matter-lets-ask-our-audience/" class="read-more">Read more</a></p></div> <div class="breadcrumbs"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/" title="View all posts in News">News</a> <span class="arrow-right">&rarr;</span> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/media-innovation/" title="View all posts in Media Innovation">Media Innovation</a></div> <dl class="article-tools"> <dt>Tools:</dt> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/352419/why-does-local-matter-lets-ask-our-audience/#disqus_thread" class="comments"><span class="dsq-postid" rel="352419 http://www.poynter.org/?p=352419">0 Comments</span></a></dd> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/352419/why-does-local-matter-lets-ask-our-audience/" class="permalink">Permalink</a></dd> <dd><!-- AddThis Button BEGIN --> <div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "> <a class="addthis_button_email" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/352419/why-does-local-matter-lets-ask-our-audience/" addthis:title="Why does local matter? I’m equally concerned about the last point — about archiving original content published on the Facebook platform — particularly after I <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/https://twitter.com/mkramer/status/598464135458889728?lang=en">asked folks</a> how AOL archived original content by news organizations back when they did it and was told that in some cases, it just didn&#8217;t happen.</p> <p>It would be short-sighted and foolish for publishers to ignore third-party distribution platforms, both for revenue reasons and the much-needed audiences they provide. But publishers must also think about workflows for archiving their original content published on these platforms – ranging from captions on brand pages and Instant Articles on Facebook to ephemeral Snaps posted on Snapchat — for the benefit of future audiences, journalists, and historians. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/351053/does-the-rise-of-ephemeral-content-spell-the-death-of-archives/" class="read-more">Read more</a></p></div> <div class="breadcrumbs"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/" title="View all posts in News">News</a> <span class="arrow-right">&rarr;</span> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/media-innovation/" title="View all posts in Media Innovation">Media Innovation</a></div> <dl class="article-tools"> <dt>Tools:</dt> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/351053/does-the-rise-of-ephemeral-content-spell-the-death-of-archives/#disqus_thread" class="comments"><span class="dsq-postid" rel="351053 http://www.poynter.org/?p=351053">0 Comments</span></a></dd> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/351053/does-the-rise-of-ephemeral-content-spell-the-death-of-archives/" class="permalink">Permalink</a></dd> <dd><!-- AddThis Button BEGIN --> <div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "> <a class="addthis_button_email" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/351053/does-the-rise-of-ephemeral-content-spell-the-death-of-archives/" addthis:title="Does the rise of ephemeral content spell the death of archives?">Email</a> <a class="addthis_button_compact" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/351053/does-the-rise-of-ephemeral-content-spell-the-death-of-archives/" addthis:title="Does the rise of ephemeral content spell the death of archives?">Share</a> </div> <script type="text/javascript" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741js_/http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#username=xa-4ccb31260be55b75"></script> <!-- AddThis Button END --></dd> </dl> </div> </div> <h3 class="edition">Wednesday, June 10, 2015</h3> <div id="post-350121" class="entry-content post-feature-primary excerpt-5"> <div class="article excerpt"> <div class="image-right"><img width="160" height="90" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741im_/http://www.poynter.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/17027128219_5df64e4dce_k-160x90.jpg" class="attachment-article-medium wp-post-image" alt="Photo by Andreas Zieroth/Flickr"/></div> <h2 class="article"> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/?post_type=post&amp;p=350121" title="Permalink to We’re using hashtags less than ever. By “we” I don’t just mean AJ+. I mean everyone. In recent months when I’ve checked Topsy or Twitter trends before tweeting, I’ve often seen a keyword(s) for a particular story trending higher than a hashtag.</p> <p>I’ve wondered: Are hashtags growing obsolete? </p> <p>Solely based on observation, I’d answer my own question with “no.” But, it does appear now more than ever that people and the media are becoming more selective about how and when to use hashtags — meaning sometimes not at all. At the same time, when we do use hashtags for certain stories, we’re finding ourselves grappling with the ethical implications of using community-generated classifications to enter existing conversations. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/350121/were-using-hashtags-less-than-ever-heres-why/" class="read-more">Read more</a></p></div> <div class="breadcrumbs"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/" title="View all posts in News">News</a> <span class="arrow-right">&rarr;</span> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/media-innovation/" title="View all posts in Media Innovation">Media Innovation</a></div> <dl class="article-tools"> <dt>Tools:</dt> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/350121/were-using-hashtags-less-than-ever-heres-why/#disqus_thread" class="comments"><span class="dsq-postid" rel="350121 http://www.poynter.org/?p=350121">0 Comments</span></a></dd> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/350121/were-using-hashtags-less-than-ever-heres-why/" class="permalink">Permalink</a></dd> <dd><!-- AddThis Button BEGIN --> <div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "> <a class="addthis_button_email" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/350121/were-using-hashtags-less-than-ever-heres-why/" addthis:title="We’re using hashtags less than ever. But that doesn’t mean I don’t stay up-to-date with what’s happening at journalism conferences — I just use social media to keep myself abreast of the latest tools and tricks.</p> <p>This past weekend, I was following seven events: the 2015 Local Independent Online News Publisher Meeting in Philly, the Cultural Heritage Information Management Forum at Catholic University, the National Day of Civic Hacking, the Canadian Association of Journalists National Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Personal Democracy Forum in New York City, the Investigative News Network’s one day conference in Philly, and the Investigative Reporters and Editors’ annual conference, also in Philly.</p> <p>That’s a lot of conferences and events. Luckily, as <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/media-innovation/334865/12-ideas-for-extending-your-reporting-and-your-reach/">I mentioned</a> in a previous column, it’s pretty easy to stay up to date with the conference circuit via Tweetdeck. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/349581/7-conferences-1-couch-what-i-learned-this-weekend-without-leaving-my-apartment/" class="read-more">Read more</a></p></div> <div class="breadcrumbs"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/" title="View all posts in News">News</a> <span class="arrow-right">&rarr;</span> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/media-innovation/" title="View all posts in Media Innovation">Media Innovation</a></div> <dl class="article-tools"> <dt>Tools:</dt> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/349581/7-conferences-1-couch-what-i-learned-this-weekend-without-leaving-my-apartment/#disqus_thread" class="comments"><span class="dsq-postid" rel="349581 http://www.poynter.org/?p=349581">0 Comments</span></a></dd> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/349581/7-conferences-1-couch-what-i-learned-this-weekend-without-leaving-my-apartment/" class="permalink">Permalink</a></dd> <dd><!-- AddThis Button BEGIN --> <div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "> <a class="addthis_button_email" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/349581/7-conferences-1-couch-what-i-learned-this-weekend-without-leaving-my-apartment/" addthis:title="7 conferences, 1 couch: What I learned this weekend without leaving my apartment">Email</a> <a class="addthis_button_compact" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/349581/7-conferences-1-couch-what-i-learned-this-weekend-without-leaving-my-apartment/" addthis:title="7 conferences, 1 couch: What I learned this weekend without leaving my apartment">Share</a> </div> <script type="text/javascript" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741js_/http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#username=xa-4ccb31260be55b75"></script> <!-- AddThis Button END --></dd> </dl> </div> </div> <h3 class="edition">Monday, June 08, 2015</h3> <div id="post-349737" class="entry-content post- excerpt-8"> <div class="article excerpt"> <h2 class="article"> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/?post_type=post&amp;p=349737" title="Permalink to Don’t chase stories everyone else is chasing and other lessons from LION’s conference" rel="bookmark">Don&#8217;t chase stories everyone else is chasing and other lessons from LION&#8217;s conference</a> </h2> <p class="article-meta"> <span class="meta-byline"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/author/kristenhare/" title="Posts by Kristen Hare" rel="author">Kristen Hare</a></span> <span class="meta-datetime"> <span class="meta-date">June 8, 2015</span> <span class="meta-time">11:45 am</span> </span> </p> <div class="excerpt"><p>During the weekend, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/349073/6-questions-about-local-independent-news-with-lions-matt-derienzo/">members of Local Independent Online News Publishers</a> met in Philadelphia for a conference. There are also a few sessions on podcasting, a mobile bootcamp on Periscope, a session on drones and a session called &#8220;<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://ona15.journalists.org/sessions/empathyinthenewsroom/#.VXHn2mRViko">Changing Your Stylebook To Create a More Empathetic Newsroom</a>.&#8221;</p> <p>&#8220;I would add to it that we had quite a few pitches on bots this year, which seems to be a popular and emerging issue,&#8221; Knoblich said.</p> <p>The final conference schedule should be out by July. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/349491/heres-a-look-at-how-ona15-is-shaping-up/" class="read-more">Read more</a></p></div> <div class="breadcrumbs"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/" title="View all posts in News">News</a> <span class="arrow-right">&rarr;</span> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/media-innovation/" title="View all posts in Media Innovation">Media Innovation</a></div> <dl class="article-tools"> <dt>Tools:</dt> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/349491/heres-a-look-at-how-ona15-is-shaping-up/#disqus_thread" class="comments"><span class="dsq-postid" rel="349491 http://www.poynter.org/?p=349491">0 Comments</span></a></dd> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/349491/heres-a-look-at-how-ona15-is-shaping-up/" class="permalink">Permalink</a></dd> <dd><!-- AddThis Button BEGIN --> <div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "> <a class="addthis_button_email" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/349491/heres-a-look-at-how-ona15-is-shaping-up/" addthis:title="Here’s a look at how ONA15 is shaping up">Email</a> <a class="addthis_button_compact" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/349491/heres-a-look-at-how-ona15-is-shaping-up/" addthis:title="Here’s a look at how ONA15 is shaping up">Share</a> </div> <script type="text/javascript" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741js_/http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#username=xa-4ccb31260be55b75"></script> <!-- AddThis Button END --></dd> </dl> </div> </div> <div class="poynter-pager"> <div class="previous-link"></div> <div class="next-link"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150628010741/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/media-innovation/page/2/">Next Page &raquo;</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="container clearfix" style="margin-bottom: 10px;"> <div id="acm_ad_zones-2" class="widget acm_ad_zones"> <div id="acm-ad-tag-1417184426242-0" style="width:728px;
