I focus primarily on the work of a number of Argentine composers who went into political exile in the late 1970s and who continue to live abroad. Drawing on the ideas of Russian linguist Mikhail Bakhtin (concepts of dialogic relationships and polyvocality), I explore the creative mechanisms that allowed these and other artists to engage with a multiplicity of seemingly irreconcilable idioms within the framing concept of tango in order to accommodate their own musical needs and inquietudes. In addition, based on fieldwork conducted in Basel, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Gerona, Paris, and Rotterdam, I examine the mechanism through which musicians (some experienced tango players with longstanding ties with the genre, others young performers who have only recently fully embraced tango) engage with these new forms in order to revisit, create or reconstruct a sense of personal or communal identity through their performances and compositions. I argue that these novel expressions are recognized as tango not because of their melodies, harmonies or rhythmic patterns, but because of the ways these features are “musicalized” by the performers. Two related phenomena are addressed here. First, the article examines the blossoming of the tango industry in Buenos Aires (Argentina&#39;s capital), which is supported by both a foreign and local tango audience. Second, it explores the migratory careers of Argentine tango dancers and musicians who, particularly in New York City, have joined efforts to rebrand the tango as their authentic national product. The cross-cultural dif!usion of the tango that took place afier the first consolidation process in the Rioplatense area, and its consequences from that moment to the present can be better understood if we apply the hybridization concept on three levels: i.e. if we consider it as an object, as aprocess, and as a consideration. These categories can be used to distinguish four historical stages of the Italian tango: reception, songs during the Fascist period, liscio, and postmodern. In the tango, hybridization is intimately related to the subject of identity. In Argentina, the perception of the choreographic hybridization caused by cross-cultural contact produced the tango &#39;s &quot;original identity&quot; and idealized condition of immutability to appeal to so me poets. In fact, it holds such deep and varied significance in the immigrant experience that it is curious how little intersection there is between historians of music and of migration. 1 In Italian culture, music serves an immensely important purpose. It is woven throughout the fabric of life and, as such, has played an integral role in the migration of Italy&#39;s people, particularly those from the Campania region, who are immersed in and reared under the influence of the Neapolitan musical genre. This article explores the ways in which the immigrant experience can be understood during three periods in Argentine music history: the rise of tango leading up to the First World War, the post-Second World War boom of pop music and media, and the politicized rock &#39;n&#39; roll of the ensuing decades. The tango, the national dance of Argentina, represents many of these images and stereotypes and yet it is the heart of Argentinean visual and cultural expression. In addition, the tango is multi-dimensional because it shows the changes in Argentina&#39;s social landscape, diverse identities, and communities who in return help shape the development of the dance into this &quot;new modern identity.&quot; In Intersecting Tango: Cultural Geographies of Buenos Aires, 1900-1930 Adriana Bergero illustrates Buenos Aires in all of these complexities. She draws on literature, journalism, photography, music, and other forms of popular culture in the theater that surrounds the &quot;tango.&quot; Through the uses of private letters, fashion ads, and the values attached to perfumes, Bergero traces the change in social makeup of Argentinean society through which these diverse communities evolved a new modern national identity. The period 1900-1930 is specifically significant to her study because of the city&#39;s constant changes in landscape, composition, and character. Her study is framed around five presidencies in Argentina that brought industrialization, foreign trade, and global markets to the country. After 1870, leaders and intellectuals in most Latin American and Spanish-speaking Caribbean countries struggled with the desire to define their elite, middle, and lower sectors of society. Bergero&#39;s study reminds readers of the importance popular culture has in one&#39;s understanding of how a society defines its national identity. The elite responded to these cultural challenges by endorsing the image that Argentina is a nation committed to modernity based on the supporters of liberalism such as immigration, industrial growth, economic progress, and public education. (3) For example, one sees this when Bergero discusses how popular culture in the 1920s affected the fundamental shift in the &quot;imaginaries&quot; dealing with militant responses to the political and economic abuse of immigrants, workers, and women.
