and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>they were inclined<MH5186> to follow<MH310> Abimelech<MH40>, for they said<MH559>, “He is our relative<MH251>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And they gave<MH5414> him seventy<MH7657> <i>pieces</i> of silver<MH3701> from the house<MH1004> of Baal-berith<MH1170>, with which<MH1992a> Abimelech<MH40> hired<MH7936> worthless<MH7386> and reckless<MH6348> men<MH376>, and they followed<MH1980, 310> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then he went<MH935> to his father’s<MH1> house<MH1004> in Ophrah<MH6084> and killed<MH2026> his brothers<MH251> the sons<MH1121> of Jerubbaal<MH3378>, seventy<MH7657> men<MH376>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>on one<MH259> stone<MH68>. But Jotham<MH3147> the youngest<MH6996b> son<MH1121> of Jerubbaal<MH3378> was left<MH3498>, because<MH3588> he hid<MH2244> himself. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>All<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of Shechem<MH7927> and all<MH3605> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Beth-millo<MH1037> assembled<MH622> together, and they went<MH1980> and made<MH4427a> Abimelech<MH40> king<MH4428>, by the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>oak<MH436> of the memorial<MH4676> stone<MH4676> which<MH834> was in Shechem<MH7927>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now when they told<MH5046> Jotham<MH3147>, he went<MH1980> and stood<MH5975> on the top<MH7218> of Mount<MH2022> Gerizim<MH1630>, and raised<MH5375> his voice<MH6963> and called<MH7121> out<MH7121>. And he said<MH559> to them, “Listen<MH8085> to me, you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of Shechem<MH7927>, that God<MH430> may listen<MH8085> to you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Once<MH1980> the trees<MH6086> went<MH1980> to anoint<MH4886> a king<MH4428> over<MH5921> them, and they said<MH559> to the olive<MH2132> tree<MH2132>, ‘Reign<MH4427a> over<MH5921> us!’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But the olive<MH2132> tree<MH2132> said<MH559> to them, ‘Shall I give<MH2308> up<MH2308> my fatness<MH1880> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>which<MH834> God<MH430> and mankind<MH376> are honored<MH3513>, and go<MH1980> to wave<MH5128> over<MH5921> the trees<MH6086>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then the trees<MH6086> said<MH559> to the fig<MH8384> tree<MH8384>, ‘You, come<MH1980>, reign<MH4427a> over<MH5921> us!’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But the fig<MH8384> tree<MH8384> said<MH559> to them, ‘Shall I give<MH2308> up<MH2308> my sweetness<MH4987> and my good<MH2896a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>fruit<MH8570>, and go<MH1980> to wave<MH5128> over<MH5921> the trees<MH6086>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then the trees<MH6086> said<MH559> to the vine<MH1612>, ‘You, come<MH1980>, reign<MH4427a> over<MH5921> us!’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But the vine<MH1612> said<MH559> to them, ‘Shall I give<MH2308> up<MH2308> my new<MH8492> wine<MH8492>, which cheers<MH8055> God<MH430> and mankind<MH376>, and go<MH1980> to wave<MH5128> over<MH5921> the trees<MH6086>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the trees<MH6086> said<MH559> to the bramble<MH329>, ‘You, come<MH1980>, reign<MH4427a> over<MH5921> us!’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And the bramble<MH329> said<MH559> to the trees<MH6086>, ‘If<MH518> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>really<MH571> are anointing<MH4886> me as king<MH4428> over<MH5921> you, come<MH935> and take<MH2620> refuge<MH2620> in my shade<MH6738>; but if<MH518> not, may fire<MH784> come<MH3318> out<MH3318> of the bramble<MH329> and consume<MH398> the cedars<MH730> of Lebanon<MH3844>.’ <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“Now<MH6258> then, if<MH518> you have acted<MH6213a> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>honesty<MH571> and integrity<MH8549> in making<MH4427a> Abimelech<MH40> king<MH4427a>, and if<MH518> you have dealt<MH6213a> well<MH2899b> with Jerubbaal<MH3378> and his house<MH1004>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>have dealt<MH6213a> with him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>as he deserved<MH1576, 3027>— <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>for my father<MH1> fought<MH3898a> for you, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>risked<MH7993, 5048> his life<MH5315> and saved<MH5337> you from the hand<MH3027> of Midian<MH4080>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>but <i>in fact</i> you have risen<MH6965> against<MH5921> my father’s<MH1> house<MH1004> today<MH3117> and have killed<MH2026> his sons<MH1121>, seventy<MH7657> men<MH376>, on one<MH259> stone<MH68>, and have made<MH4427a> Abimelech<MH40>, the son<MH1121> of his female<MH519> slave<MH519>, king<MH4427a> over<MH5921> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of Shechem<MH7927>, because<MH3588> he is your relative<MH251>— <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>so if<MH518> you have acted<MH6213a> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>honesty<MH571> and integrity<MH8549> toward Jerubbaal<MH3378> and his house<MH1004> this<MH2088> day<MH3117>, be<MH8055> joyful<MH8055> about Abimelech<MH40>, and may he also<MH1571> be<MH8055> joyful<MH8055> about you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But if<MH518> not, may fire<MH784> come<MH3318> out<MH3318> of Abimelech<MH40> and consume<MH398> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of Shechem<MH7927> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>Beth-millo<MH1037>; and may fire<MH784> come<MH3318> out<MH3318> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of Shechem<MH7927> and from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>Beth-millo<MH1037>, and consume<MH398> Abimelech<MH40>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then Jotham<MH3147> escaped<MH5127> and fled<MH1272>, and went<MH1980> to Beer<MH876>; and he stayed<MH3427> there<MH8033> because<MH4480, 6440> of his brother<MH251> Abimelech<MH40>. <p class="hdg">Shechem and Abimelech Fall</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Now Abimelech<MH40> ruled<MH8323> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478> for three<MH7969> years<MH8141>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Then God<MH430> sent<MH7971> an evil<MH7451a> spirit<MH7307> between<MH996> Abimelech<MH40> and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of Shechem<MH7927>; and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of Shechem<MH7927> dealt<MH898> treacherously<MH898> with Abimelech<MH40>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>so that the violence<MH2555> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>done to the seventy<MH7657> sons<MH1121> of Jerubbaal<MH3378> would come<MH935>, and <i>the responsibility for</i> their blood<MH1818> would be placed<MH7760> on their brother<MH251> Abimelech<MH40>, who<MH834> killed<MH2026> them, and on the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of Shechem<MH7927>, who<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>encouraged<MH2388, 3027> him to kill<MH2026> his brothers<MH251>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>The <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of Shechem<MH7927> set<MH7760> up<MH7760> men<MH693> in<MH693> ambush<MH693> against him on the tops<MH7218> of the mountains<MH2022>, and they robbed<MH1497> everyone<MH3605> who<MH834> would pass<MH5674a> by them on the road<MH1870>; and it was reported<MH5046> to Abimelech<MH40>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Now Gaal<MH1603> the son<MH1121> of Ebed<MH5651> came<MH935> with his relatives<MH251>, and crossed<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> into Shechem<MH7927>; and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ac]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of Shechem<MH7927> trusted<MH982> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>So they went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to the field<MH7704> and gathered<MH1219> the<MH1219> grapes<MH1219> of their vineyards<MH3754> and trampled<MH1869> <i>them,</i> and held<MH6213a> a festival<MH1974>; and they went<MH935> into the house<MH1004> of their god<MH430>, and ate<MH398> and drank<MH8354> and cursed<MH7043> Abimelech<MH40>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then Gaal<MH1603> the son<MH1121> of Ebed<MH5651> said<MH559>, “Who<MH4310> is Abimelech<MH40>, and who<MH4310> is Shechem<MH7927>, that we should serve<MH5647> him? Is he not the son<MH1121> of Jerubbaal<MH3378>, and <i>is</i> Zebul<MH2083> <i>not</i> his governor<MH6496>? Serve<MH5647> the men<MH376> of Hamor<MH2544> the father<MH1> of Shechem<MH7927>; but why<MH4069> should we serve<MH5647> him? <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ad]</a></span>If<MH4310, 5414> only<MH4310, 5414> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> were under my authority<MH3027>! Then I would do<MH5493> away<MH5493> with<MH5493> Abimelech<MH40>.” And he said<MH559> to Abimelech<MH40>, “Enlarge<MH7235a> your army<MH6635> and come<MH3318> out<MH3318>!” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>When Zebul<MH2083> the leader<MH8269> of the city<MH5892b> heard<MH8085> the words<MH1697> of Gaal<MH1603> the son<MH1121> of Ebed<MH5651>, his anger<MH639> burned<MH2734>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>So using deception<MH8649a>, he <i>successfully</i> sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> to Abimelech<MH40>, saying<MH559>, “Behold<MH2009>, Gaal<MH1603> the son<MH1121> of Ebed<MH5651> and his relatives<MH251> have come<MH935> to Shechem<MH7927>; and behold<MH2009>, they are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ae]</a></span>stirring<MH6696a> up<MH6696a> the city<MH5892b> against<MH5921> you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>So now<MH6258>, arise<MH6965> by night<MH3915>, you and the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> are with you, and lie<MH693> in<MH693> wait<MH693> in the field<MH7704>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Then in the morning<MH1242>, as soon as the sun<MH8121> is up, you shall rise<MH7925> early<MH7925> and attack<MH6584> the city<MH5892b>; and behold<MH2009>, when he and the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> are with him come<MH3318> out<MH3318> against<MH413> you, you shall do<MH6213a> to them <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[af]</a></span>whatever<MH3512c> you can.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>So Abimelech<MH40> and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> <i>were</i> with him got<MH6965> up<MH6965> at night<MH3915>, and lay<MH693> in<MH693> wait<MH693> against<MH5921> Shechem<MH7927>, in four<MH702> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ag]</a></span>units<MH7218>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Now Gaal<MH1603> the son<MH1121> of Ebed<MH5651> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> and stood<MH5975> at the entrance<MH6607> of the city<MH5892b> gate<MH8179>; and Abimelech<MH40> and the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> <i>were</i> with him arose<MH6965> from the ambush<MH3993>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>When Gaal<MH1603> saw<MH7200> the people<MH5971a>, he said<MH559> to Zebul<MH2083>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ah]</a></span>Look<MH2009>, people<MH5971a> are coming<MH3381> down<MH3381> from the tops<MH7218> of the mountains<MH2022>.” But Zebul<MH2083> said<MH559> to him, “You are seeing<MH7200> the shadow<MH6738> of the mountains<MH2022> as <i>if they were</i> people<MH376>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And Gaal<MH1603> spoke<MH1696> yet<MH5750> again<MH3254> and said<MH559>, “Look<MH2009>, people<MH5971a> are coming<MH3381> down<MH3381> from the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ai]</a></span>highest<MH2872> part<MH2872> of the land<MH776>, and one<MH259> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aj]</a></span>unit<MH7218> is coming<MH935> by way<MH1870> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ak]</a></span>the diviners’<MH6049a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[al]</a></span>oak<MH436>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Then Zebul<MH2083> said<MH559> to him, “Where<MH346> then<MH645> is your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[am]</a></span>boasting<MH6310> with which<MH834> you said<MH559>, ‘Who<MH4310> is Abimelech<MH40> that we should serve<MH5647> him?’ Is this<MH2088> not the people<MH5971a> whom<MH834> you rejected<MH3988a>? Go<MH3318> out<MH3318> now<MH6258> and fight<MH3898a> them!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>So Gaal<MH1603> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[an]</a></span>in the sight<MH6440> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ao]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of Shechem<MH7927> and fought<MH3898a> Abimelech<MH40>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>But Abimelech<MH40> chased<MH7291> him, and he fled<MH5127> from him; and many<MH7227a> fell<MH5307> wounded<MH2491a> up to the entrance<MH6607> of the gate<MH8179>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Then Abimelech<MH40> stayed<MH3427> in Arumah<MH725>, but Zebul<MH2083> drove<MH1644> out<MH1644> Gaal<MH1603> and his relatives<MH251> so<MH4480> that<MH4480> they could not<MH4480> stay<MH3427> in Shechem<MH7927>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> the next<MH4283> day<MH4283>, that the people<MH5971a> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to the field<MH7704>, and it was reported<MH5046> to Abimelech<MH40>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>So he took<MH3947> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ap]</a></span>his people<MH5971a> and divided<MH2673> them into three<MH7969> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aq]</a></span>units<MH7218>, and lay<MH693> in<MH693> wait<MH693> in the field<MH7704>; when he looked<MH7200> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ar]</a></span>saw<MH7200> the people<MH5971a> coming<MH3318> out<MH3318> from the city<MH5892b>, he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[as]</a></span>attacked<MH6965, 5921> them and killed<MH5221> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>Then Abimelech<MH40> and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[at]</a></span>company<MH7218> who<MH834> was with him rushed<MH6584> forward<MH6584> and stood<MH5975> at the entrance<MH6607> of the city<MH5892b> gate<MH8179>; the <i>other</i> two<MH8147> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[au]</a></span>companies<MH7218> then attacked<MH6584, 5921> all<MH3605> who<MH834> <i>were</i> in the field<MH7704> and killed<MH5221> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>Abimelech<MH40> fought<MH3898a> against the city<MH5892b> that whole<MH3605> day<MH3117>, and he captured<MH3920> the city<MH5892b> and killed<MH2026> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> <i>were</i> in it; then he tore<MH5422> down<MH5422> the city<MH5892b> and sowed<MH2232> it with salt<MH4417>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>When all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[av]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of the tower<MH4026> of Shechem<MH7927> heard<MH8085> <i>about it,</i> they entered<MH935> the inner<MH6877> chamber<MH6877> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aw]</a></span>temple<MH1004> of El-berith<MH410, 1285>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And it was reported<MH5046> to Abimelech<MH40> that all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ax]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of the tower<MH4026> of Shechem<MH7927> were gathered<MH6908> together. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>So Abimelech<MH40> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Mount<MH2022> Zalmon<MH6756a>, he and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> <i>were</i> with him; and Abimelech<MH40> took<MH3947> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ay]</a></span>an axe<MH7134> in his hand<MH3027> and cut<MH3772> down<MH3772> a branch<MH7754b> <i>from the</i> trees<MH6086>, and lifted<MH5375> it and put<MH7760> <i>it</i> on his shoulder<MH7926>. Then he said<MH559> to the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> <i>were</i> with him, “What<MH4100> you saw<MH7200> me do<MH6213a>, hurry<MH4116> <i>and</i> do<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[az]</a></span>likewise<MH3644>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>So all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> also<MH1571> cut<MH3772> down<MH3772>, each<MH376> one<MH376>, his branch<MH7754a> and followed<MH1980, 310> Abimelech<MH40>, and put<MH7760> <i>them</i> on top<MH5921> of the inner<MH6877> chamber<MH6877> and set<MH3341> the inner<MH6877> chamber<MH6877> on fire<MH784> over<MH5921> those <i>inside,</i> so that all<MH3605> the people<MH376> of the tower<MH4026> of Shechem<MH7927> also<MH1571> died<MH4191>, about a thousand<MH505> men<MH376> and women<MH802>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>Then Abimelech<MH40> went<MH1980> to Thebez<MH8405>, and he camped<MH2583> against Thebez<MH8405> and captured<MH3920> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>But there was a strong<MH5797> tower<MH4026> in the center<MH8432> of the city<MH5892b>, and all<MH3605> the men<MH376> and women<MH802> with all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ba]</a></span>leaders<MH1167> of the city<MH5892b> fled<MH5127> there<MH8033> and shut<MH5462> themselves in<MH5462>; and they went<MH5927> up<MH5927> on the roof<MH1406> of the tower<MH4026>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>So Abimelech<MH40> came<MH935> to the tower<MH4026> and fought<MH3898a> against it, and approached<MH5066> the entrance<MH6607> of the tower<MH4026> to burn<MH8313> it down<MH8313> with fire<MH784>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>But a woman<MH802> threw<MH7993> an upper<MH7393> millstone<MH7393> on Abimelech’s<MH40> head<MH7218>, crushing<MH7533> his skull<MH1538>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>Then he called<MH7121> quickly<MH4120> to the young<MH5288> man<MH5288>, his armor<MH3627> bearer<MH5375>, and said<MH559> to him, “Draw<MH8025> your sword<MH2719> and kill<MH4191> me, so<MH6435> that<MH6435> it will not<MH6435> be said<MH559> of me, ‘A woman<MH802> killed<MH2026> him.’” So <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[bb]</a></span>the young<MH5288> man<MH5288> pierced<MH1856> him through<MH1856>, and he died<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/9-55.htm"><b>55</b></a></span>Now when the
