and all<MH3605> the bread<MH3899> of their provision<MH6718b> was<MH3001> dry<MH3001> <i>and</i> had become<MH1961> crumbled<MH5350>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And they went<MH1980> to Joshua<MH3091> at the camp<MH4264> at Gilgal<MH1537> and said<MH559> to him and to the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478>, “We have come<MH935> from a far<MH7350> country<MH776>; now<MH6258> then, make<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with us.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>But the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> said<MH559> to the Hivites<MH2340>, “Perhaps<MH194> you are living<MH3427> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>within<MH7130> our land<MH7130>; how<MH349> then are we to make<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with you?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So they said<MH559> to Joshua<MH3091>, “We are your servants<MH5650>.” Then Joshua<MH3091> said<MH559> to them, “Who<MH4310> are you and where<MH370> do you come<MH935> from?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>They said<MH559> to him, “Your servants<MH5650> have come<MH935> from a very<MH3966> distant<MH7350> country<MH776> because of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>fame<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>; for we have heard<MH8085> the report<MH8089> about Him and all<MH3605> that He did<MH6213a> in Egypt<MH4714>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and all<MH3605> that He did<MH6213a> to the two<MH8147> kings<MH4428> of the Amorites<MH567> who<MH834> were beyond<MH5676> the Jordan<MH3383>, to Sihon<MH5511> king<MH4428> of Heshbon<MH2809> and to Og<MH5747> king<MH4428> of Bashan<MH1316> who<MH834> was in Ashtaroth<MH6252a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So our elders<MH2205> and all<MH3605> the inhabitants<MH3427> of our country<MH776> spoke<MH559> to us, saying<MH559>, ‘Take<MH3947> provisions<MH6720> in your hand<MH3027> for the journey<MH1870>, and go<MH1980> to meet<MH7122> them, and say<MH559> to them, “We are your servants<MH5650>; now<MH6258> then, make<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with us.”’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>This<MH2088> bread<MH3899> of ours <i>was</i> hot<MH2525> <i>when</i> we took<MH6719b> it for<MH6719b> our provisions<MH6719b> from our houses<MH1004> on the day<MH3117> that we left<MH3318> to come<MH1980> to you; but now<MH6258> behold<MH2009>, it is<MH3001> dry<MH3001> and has become<MH1961> crumbled<MH5350>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And these<MH428> wineskins<MH4997> which<MH834> we filled<MH4390> were new<MH2319>, and behold<MH2009>, they are split<MH1234> open<MH1234>; and these<MH428> clothes<MH8008> of ours and our sandals<MH5275> are worn<MH1086> out<MH1086> from the very<MH3966> long<MH7230> journey<MH1870>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So the men<MH376> <i>of Israel</i> took<MH3947> some<MH4480> of their provisions<MH6718b>, and did not ask<MH7592> for the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>counsel<MH6310> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And Joshua<MH3091> made<MH6213a> peace<MH7965> with them and made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with them, to let them live<MH2421a>; and the leaders<MH5387a> of the congregation<MH5712> swore<MH7650> <i>an oath</i> to them. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>However, it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> at the end<MH7097a> of three<MH7969> days<MH3117> after<MH310> they had made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with them, that they heard<MH8085> that they were neighbors<MH7138> and that they were living<MH3427> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>within<MH7130> their land. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> set<MH5265> out<MH5265> and came<MH935> to their cities<MH5892b> on the third<MH7992> day<MH3117>. Now their cities<MH5892b> <i>were</i> Gibeon<MH1391>, Chephirah<MH3716a>, Beeroth<MH881>, and Kiriath-jearim<MH7157>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/9-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> did not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>attack<MH5221> them because<MH3588> the leaders<MH5387a> of the congregation<MH5712> had sworn<MH7650> to them by the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>.
