When he started with the company in 2009, it had no communications team, but Thornton’s organization has since grown to one that stretches around the world, synchronizing our brand story across multiple countries and languages, all while Audible continues to redefine audio entertainment and expand its <a href="/about/impact">impact work</a>. </p><p>Thornton, who first worked as an editor for Random House and Scribner, then covered that industry for publications like <em>Publisher’s Weekly</em>, says that for him, joining Audible was a way to stay true to the roots of his career while being a part of something entirely new. He lives in New Jersey with his family, splitting his time between working from home and in our Newark headquarters.</p><h6>How would you describe your approach to communications?</h6><p>We are all, to some degree, storytellers, and I think people at Audible are particularly conscious of that. We’re a company built on words. The work that the communications team does is constantly shaping the story of Audible — who we are as a brand, what we represent to our employees and prospective employees, to our stakeholders in Newark and in our other hub locations, to reporters who write about us, and to talent that works with us. The stories we tell should inform all of these audiences but also engage and inspire them to join in our mission of spreading the joy of listening.</p><h6>What drew you to Audible?</h6><p>I started my career on the editorial side of print book publishing, then covered that industry for a bit, and saw Audible as a logical extension of that career path but also a radical departure from it in a way I found exciting. It was clear Don was building the future here.</p><h6>What do you like best about your work?</h6><p>My communications colleagues and I are lucky to work across almost every team and project at Audible, so we are truly embedded cross-functionally. Externally it’s similar — we interface with listeners, local stakeholders, media, talent, and as we scale globally we are fine-tuning our storytelling to reflect cultural nuances. Making sure Audible gets the recognition it deserves for its leadership in digital media and in creating a new performance art, a new way to consume information and entertainment — this is always rewarding. </p><h6>What is the most memorable project you’ve work on at Audible?</h6><p>Does anyone remember <a href="https://www.audible.com/ep/dogs" target="_blank">Audible for Dogs</a>? When he started with the company in 2009, it had no communications team, but Thornton’s organization has since grown to one that stretches around the world, synchronizing our brand story across multiple countries and languages, all while Audible continues to redefine audio entertainment and expand its [impact work](https://www.audible.com/about/impact). \n\nThornton, who first worked as an editor for Random House and Scribner, then covered that industry for publications like *Publisher’s Weekly*, says that for him, joining Audible was a way to stay true to the roots of his career while being a part of something entirely new. He lives in New Jersey with his family, splitting his time between working from home and in our Newark headquarters.\n\n###### How would you describe your approach to communications? \nWe are all, to some degree, storytellers, and I think people at Audible are particularly conscious of that. We’re a company built on words. The work that the communications team does is constantly shaping the story of Audible — who we are as a brand, what we represent to our employees and prospective employees, to our stakeholders in Newark and in our other hub locations, to reporters who write about us, and to talent that works with us. The stories we tell should inform all of these audiences but also engage and inspire them to join in our mission of spreading the joy of listening.\n\n###### What drew you to Audible?\nI started my career on the editorial side of print book publishing, then covered that industry for a bit, and saw Audible as a logical extension of that career path but also a radical departure from it in a way I found exciting. It was clear Don was building the future here.\n\n###### What do you like best about your work?\nMy communications colleagues and I are lucky to work across almost every team and project at Audible, so we are truly embedded cross-functionally. Externally it’s similar — we interface with listeners, local stakeholders, media, talent, and as we scale globally we are fine-tuning our storytelling to reflect cultural nuances. The key for me is keeping a clear mind, using my time effectively, and rigorously doing the basics each day. This includes ruthlessly prioritizing which meetings I attend (and more importantly don’t attend), finishing the day with zero emails in my inbox, and staying connected to my entire org through consistent check-ins with my directs, skip levels, coffee chats, and informal meetings. I’m a systems-and-routine kind of person, so repeatable patterns are important to me and help with balance. For example, every Sunday night, I write down three non-negotiable goals for the week and do my best to achieve them. I don’t believe in to-do lists. I also approach personal and family goals in the same way. My career started as a software development engineer but I found thinking about customer experiences more interesting than hardcore coding. So I became a product manager. Because I’m quite organized and enjoy making things better, my mentor pointed me to switch careers into Lean Six Sigma Business Process Improvement. Then, a few months into joining Audible, I got the opportunity to lead customer care operations. A couple of years ago, I was afforded the privilege of leading Audible’s GCUD. So it seems like I’m taking left turns all the time! And of course, it’s necessary to take great vacations with his family whenever he can. \n\n###### What advice would you give to someone starting out in their career now, given the current trends in business and technology?\n\nBe an optimist. Having a positive approach is incredibly powerful. My career started out in science and I spent some time in a research lab. Research is about believing you can figure out something that no one else has solved, doing something novel—which requires optimism. You have to believe you’re getting closer, that the next experiment will give you the clues you need to solve the problem. That lesson and approach turned out to help me throughout my entire career.\n\nThe problems we are working on, whether in science, tech, or business, are many times uncharted, with no manual or textbook to tell you what to do. As you attempt to solve big problems you are inevitably going to experience failure. Optimism provides the foundation to push forward, to drive for improvement, to challenge one’s self to grow, and in many cases, to reach your goals. It allows for success even when you fall short of your target, because you see the silver lining—and there is satisfaction in the attempt and learning from the experience. Optimism helps you see how things could be done better, helps you take risks and deal with adversity.\n\n###### What do you like best about your work?\n\nFirstly, the people. I have the pleasure to work with a group of incredibly smart, humble, and kind people. Secondly, the problems we are trying to solve, they are challenging, rewarding, and diverse. And finally, Audible’s purpose: our obsession with creating a wonderful experience for our customers; our social mission to have positive impacts in the cities and countries in which we operate; our responsibility as a group to imagine and invent—dreaming into the future on behalf of our customers and customers to come.\n\n###### What have you found most helpful for balancing a leadership role with your personal/family life?\n\nIt’s more about creating harmony with my family life than balancing—being happy at home is part of being able to sustain success at work, and being successful as a leader gives me space to be my best at home. \n\nAn area I’ve found particularly helpful in maintaining harmony is focusing on ways to scale yourself as a leader. Make hiring a top priority, hire a great team, and trust them—they are better qualified than you in their areas of expertise. Dive deep where you need to and don’t be a bottleneck where you’re not needed. Communicate efficiently; I prefer meetings and conversations over emails. Provide context and mental models so your team can lead the group forward without you. Scaling yourself gives you space to both be customer-obsessed and family-focused. \n\nIn addition, having worked for an airline and travel companies in the past, I’m definitely a believer in taking great vacations and exploring new experiences. Prioritize special time with your family. I always feel a different level of energy when I come back from a great vacation.\n\n###### Lightning Round\n__Coffee or tea:__ Definitely coffee! I grew up in the home of Starbucks (Seattle) and graduated from high school the same year they went public—it was never a choice. \n\n__Morning person or night owl:__ Night owl.\n\n__Where are you working from currently:__ I’m working both from my newly renovated home office (aka attic) and our great headquarters in Newark, NJ. Enjoying the best of both in our hybrid work environment. \n\n__How long have you been with Audible:__ Four years. \n\n__Favorite weekend activity:__ I love to travel, so my favorite weekends are always when I visit somewhere new.
