In the context of the Bible, "Mishneh" can refer to a "second" or "duplicate" and is often associated with the concept of repetition or a secondary version. It is used in various contexts within the Old Testament, signifying a secondary or duplicate aspect of something, whether it be a copy, a second in command, or a secondary location.

Biblical References:

1. Deuteronomy 17:18 · The term is notably used in the context of the king's duty to write a copy of the law. "When he is seated on his royal throne, he must write for himself a copy of this instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests." Here, "Mishneh" refers to the "copy" of the law that the king is required to transcribe, emphasizing the importance of the king's personal engagement with God's commandments.

2. 2 Kings 22:14 · In the narrative of King Josiah's reforms, the term is used in reference to the "Second Quarter" of Jerusalem, where the prophetess Huldah resided. "So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, the keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the Second District." This indicates a specific area within the city, possibly a newer or expanded section.

3. 2 Chronicles 34:22 · Similar to the account in 2 Kings, this passage also mentions the "Second Quarter" of Jerusalem. "So Hilkiah and those the king had sent with him went and spoke to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, the keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the Second District." This reinforces the geographical significance of the term.

4. Nehemiah 11:9 · The term is used to describe a position of authority. "Joel son of Zichri was the officer over them, and Judah son of Hassenuah was over the Second District of the city." Here, "Mishneh" refers to a secondary administrative division or district within the city, highlighting the structured governance of Jerusalem.

Theological Significance:

The use of "Mishneh" in the Bible underscores the importance of repetition and duplication in maintaining the integrity and continuity of God's law and order. The king's requirement to write a "Mishneh" of the law serves as a personal reminder of his covenantal responsibilities and the need for adherence to divine statutes. The geographical references to the "Second Quarter" or "Second District" illustrate the expansion and organization of the city of Jerusalem, reflecting the growth and administrative complexity of the Israelite society.

Cultural and Historical Context:

In ancient Israel, the concept of a "Mishneh" or duplicate was not only practical but also symbolic. It represented the transmission of knowledge and authority, ensuring that the core tenets of faith and governance were preserved and accessible. The practice of creating a "Mishneh" of the law for the king highlights the centrality of the Torah in guiding the moral and legal framework of the nation.

Overall, the term "Mishneh" encapsulates themes of continuity, authority, and the structured dissemination of divine instruction, playing a crucial role in the religious and civic life of ancient Israel.
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
MISHNEH
mish'-ne (ha-mishneh; 2 Kings 22:14 2 Chronicles 34:22, the King James Version "college," the Revised Version (British and American) "second quarter," margin "Hebrew Mishneh"; Zechariah 1:10, the King James Version "the second," the Revised Version (British and American) "second quarter," margin "Hebrew: Mishneh"): A part of Jerusalem, apparently not far from the FISH GATE (which see) and the MAKTESH (which see). The translation "college" is due to Targum of Jonathan on 2 Kings 22:14. The Revised Version (British and American) interpretation of Mishneh is connected with the belief that Hezekiah, when he built "the other wall without" (2 Chronicles 32:5), made the second wall on the North. There seems little evidence of this (see JERUSALEM, VI, 11), and the "second" may refer to the district of the city on the west hill or perhaps to the hill itself.

See COLLEGE.

E.
