It would be possible to achieve better measurements by expanding the range in which the production of particles can be detected. For this purpose, the ALICE Diffractive (AD0) detector has been installed and commissioned for the second phase (RUN-II). Any new detector should be able to take the data synchronously with all other detectors and be operated through the ALICE central systems. One of the key elements that must be developed for the AD0 detector is the Detector Control System (DCS). The DCS must be designed to operate safely and correctly this detector. Furthermore, the DCS must also provide optimum operating conditions for the acquisition and storage of physics data and ensure these are of the highest quality. The operation of AD0 implies the configuration of about 200 parameters, from electronics settings and power supply levels to the archiving of operating conditions data and the generation of safety alerts. It also includes the automation of procedures to get the AD0 detector ready for taking data in the appropriate conditions for the different run types in ALICE. The performance of AD0 detector depends on a certain number of parameters such as the nominal voltages for each photomultiplier tube (PMT), their threshold levels to accept or reject the incoming pulses, the definition of triggers, etc. All these parameters define the efficiency of AD0 and they have to be monitored and controlled through AD0 DCS. Finally, AD0 DCS provides the operator with multiple interfaces to execute these tasks. They are realized as operating panels and scripts running in the background. These features are implemented on a SCADA software platform as a distributed control system which integrates to the global control system of the ALICE experiment. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=AD0" title="AD0">AD0</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ALICE" title=" ALICE"> ALICE</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=DCS" title=" DCS"> DCS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=LHC" title=" LHC"> LHC</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41006/a-large-ion-collider-experiment-alice-diffractive-detector-control-system-for-run-ii-at-the-large-hadron-collider" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41006.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">305</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">87</span> Non-Interactive XOR Quantum Oblivious Transfer: Optimal Protocols and Their Experimental Implementations</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lara%20Stroh">Lara Stroh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nikola%20Horov%C3%A1"> Nikola Horová</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Robert%20St%C3%A1rek"> Robert Stárek</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ittoop%20V.%20Puthoor"> Ittoop V. Any multi-party computation can be realised with OT as a building block. XOR oblivious transfer (XOT) is a variant where the sender Alice has two bits, and a receiver, Bob, obtains either the first bit, the second bit, or their XOR. Bob should not learn anything more than this, and Alice should not learn what Bob has learned. Perfect quantum OT with information-theoretic security is known to be impossible. We determine the smallest possible cheating probabilities for unrestricted dishonest parties in non-interactive quantum XOT protocols using symmetric pure states and present an optimal protocol which outperforms classical protocols. We also "reverse" this protocol so that Bob becomes the sender of a quantum state and Alice the receiver who measures it while still implementing oblivious transfer from Alice to Bob. Cheating probabilities for both parties stay the same as for the unreversed protocol. We optically implemented both the unreversed and the reversed protocols and cheating strategies, noting that the reversed protocol is easier to implement. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=oblivious%20transfer" title="oblivious transfer">oblivious transfer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quantum%20protocol" title=" quantum protocol"> quantum protocol</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cryptography" title=" cryptography"> cryptography</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=XOR" title=" XOR"> XOR</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/168274/non-interactive-xor-quantum-oblivious-transfer-optimal-protocols-and-their-experimental-implementations" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/168274.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">126</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">86</span> A Hill Cipher Based on the Kish-Sethuraman Protocol</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kondwani%20Magamba">Kondwani Magamba</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the idealized Kish-Sethuraman (KS) protocol, messages are sent between Alice and Bob each using a secret personal key. During the American Little Theater Movement in the early 20th century, when small experimental centers of drama were established, Alice Gerstenberg challenged gender inequality through the use of social satire in her play. Incorporating textual evidence from the play, this study demonstrates that Mrs. Packard is both empowered and disempowered by her gossiping habit in terms of her self-perception and her social relationships within the play. It argues for the dramatic and satirical representation of female identity through the pragmatics of discourse analysis. These perspectives are evident in combining linguistics and literature. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=discursive%20power" title="discursive power">discursive power</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=female%20identity" title=" female identity"> female identity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=feminism%20in%20little%20theater%20movement" title=" feminism in little theater movement"> feminism in little theater movement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gossip" title=" gossip"> gossip</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/187348/empowered-gossipmonger-disempowered-woman-navigating-the-duplicity-of-discursive-power-in-alice-gerstenbergs-he-said-she-said" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/187348.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">45</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">84</span> Disowning of ‘Our Lady of Alice Bhatti’ by Mohammad Hanif Through Gendered and Religious Discourse</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abrar%20Ajmal">Abrar Ajmal</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The language used in literature reveals the culture and social gestalt of any society in which it has been constructed and consumed. This paper carries the same rationale, which aims to track certain socio-religious and cultural-economic disparities and discrepancies towards minorities, particularly Christians, in an Islamic re(public) where there is a clear majority of Muslims with the help of analysis of instances of language used in the narratives “Our Lady of Alice Bhatt” by Mohammad Hanif. It would highlight social inequalities practiced deeply in sociocultural discourse. Moreover, this research would also touch upon the question of gender discrimination and gender construction as a female entity in a male-chauvinistic scenic turnout using language since the novel revolves around communicative forfeits of Alice Bhatti’s life where she is fraying in fisticuffs to befit herself in a miss-fitted society. It would employ using Fairclough's framework for analysis to conduct a critical discourse analysis of the text at three axiom levels namely textual analysis, discursive practices, and socio-cultural analysis. Behind their political activities, their wives had a considerable influence on Ottoman social life. Despite the difficult conditions, these women involved in educating girls, encouraging Ottoman women to take part in the production area. For this purpose, they opened many schools and workplaces in various regions of the capital-Istanbul. One of these women was Lady Alice Lowther, who was known as the wife of British ambassador Gerard Agustus Lowther. She arranged various organizations in order to create necessary resources to help families of martyrs. Also, she chaired the Committee for Aid to Ottoman Military Families (Asker Ailelerine Yardım Komitesi), made an effort to establish the Society for Protection Animals in Istanbul (Istanbul Himaye-i Hayvanat Cemiyeti) with the supports of The Royal Society For Prevention Cruelty For Animals. Apart from these, she was also a good observer and writer as a traveller. She wrote and published her memories with the name of Down The Old Road (1921), When It Was June (1923) Land Of Gold Mohur (1932), Moments In Portugal Or Land Of The Laurel (1939). Owing to her great contribution to fiction, she was the first Canadian woman and the only short-story writer ever to be rewarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013. Her literary works include collections of short stories and one book published as a novel. Her stories concentrate on the human condition and the human relationships as seen through the lens of daily life. The setting in most of her stories is her native Canada- small towns much similar to the one where she grew up. Her writing style is not only realistic but is also characterized by autobiographical, historical and regional features. The aim of this research is to analyze one of the key stylistic devices often adopted by Munro in her fictions: the juxtaposition of the past and the present, with reference to the title story in Munro's short story collection <em>Too Much Happiness</em>. The story under exploration is a brief biography of the Russian Mathematician and novelist Sophia Kovalevsky (1850 – 1891), the first woman to be appointed as a professor of Mathematics at a European University in Stockholm. Thus, the story has a historical protagonist and is set on the European continent. Munro dramatizes the severe historical and cultural constraints that hindered the career of the protagonist. A pragmatic stylistic framework is being adopted and the qualitative analysis is supported by textual reference. The stylistic analysis reveals that the juxtaposition of the past and the present is one of the distinctive features that characterize the author; in a typical Munrovian manner, the protagonist often moves between the units of time: the past, the present and, sometimes, the future. Munro's style is simple and direct but cleverly constructed and densely complicated by the presence of deeper layers and stories within the story. Findings of the research reveal that the story under investigation merits reading and analyzing. It is recommended that this story and other stories by Munro are analyzed to further explore the features of her art and style. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alice%20Munro" title="Alice Munro">Alice Munro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Too%20Much%20Happiness" title=" Too Much Happiness"> Too Much Happiness</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=style" title=" style"> style</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stylistic%20analysis" title=" stylistic analysis"> stylistic analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/124809/juxtaposition-of-the-past-and-the-present-a-pragmatic-stylistic-analysis-of-the-short-story-too-much-happiness-by-alice-munro" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/124809.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">145</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">80</span> Evaluation of Massive Open Online Course in a Rural Marginalized Area: Case Study of Alice Community, Eastern Cape, South Africa</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dare%20Ebenezer%20Fatumo">Dare Ebenezer Fatumo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Olusesan%20Emmanuel%20Adelabu"> Olusesan Emmanuel Adelabu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Online learning has taken another dimension through the introduction of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), it has also become an important resource base for teaching and learning. This research aimed at investigating the use of Massive Open Online Course in a rural marginalized area. The survey research design of descriptive nature was adopted to evaluate the awareness and usage of Massive Open Online Course (MOOCs) in Alice community, Eastern Cape, South Africa. This study also employed quantitative approach by using self-structured questionnaire to evoke information from the respondents. The data collected were analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings revealed amongst others the efficacy of Massive Open Online Course (MOOCs) in fostering teaching and learning in rural marginalized areas. This study concludes that MOOCs is a veritable medium for busy or less privileged individual to acquire a degree or certification. Therefore, the study recommends MOOCs platform to be fully embraced by people in rural marginalized areas, awareness programs about its usefulness should be propagated across the municipalities nationwide. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=distance%20learning" title="distance learning">distance learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=information%20and%20communication%20technology" title=" information and communication technology"> information and communication technology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=massive%20open%20online%20course" title=" massive open online course"> massive open online course</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=online%20learning" title=" online learning"> online learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=teaching%20and%20learning" title=" teaching and learning"> teaching and learning</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98901/evaluation-of-massive-open-online-course-in-a-rural-marginalized-area-case-study-of-alice-community-eastern-cape-south-africa" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98901.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">178</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">79</span> Examining the Extent to Which the Effects of HIV/AIDS Is Addressed in Low Cost Housing Projects in South Africa: The Case of RDP Golf Course Housing Project in Alice Town, Eastern</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tatenda%20Manomano">Tatenda Manomano</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The chronic challenges presented by HIV/AIDS globally have come with extreme negative effects on individuals, families and communities as well as governments. Sub-Saharan Africa remains strongly challenged with South Africa bearing a huge brunt of these. The paper examines the extent to which the effects of HIV/AIDS are addressed in low cost housing projects in South Africa with a case of the RDP Golf Course Housing Project in Alice Town. The study used a triangulation of both qualitative and quantitative methods with the qualitative as the dominant method while the quantitative was less dominant. Findings revealed that infection rate was high; prostitution was high; alcohol abuse was also high; and rape and sexual abuse was also high and there was also lack of hospitals and social workers around the location. These findings prompted this researcher to recommend for proactive policy making that can bolster the challenges faced by these low cost housing projects in accessing health and social services as well as massive campaigns that can promote behavior modification among other things. It is hoped that this paper will be a platform to ring a bell to both government and non-government to augment the campaign against HIV/AIDS in South Africa. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=HIV%2FAIDS" title="HIV/AIDS">HIV/AIDS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RDP%20houses" title=" RDP houses"> RDP houses</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=low%20cost%20housing%20projects" title=" low cost housing projects"> low cost housing projects</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=campaigns" title=" campaigns"> campaigns</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/10705/examining-the-extent-to-which-the-effects-of-hivaids-is-addressed-in-low-cost-housing-projects-in-south-africa-the-case-of-rdp-golf-course-housing-project-in-alice-town-eastern" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/10705.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">400</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">78</span> EverPro as the Missing Piece in the Plant Protein Portfolio to Aid the Transformation to Sustainable Food Systems</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aylin%20W%20Sahin">Aylin W Sahin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alice%20Jaeger"> Alice Jaeger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Nyhan"> Laura Nyhan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gregory%20Belt"> Gregory Belt</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Steffen%20M%C3%BCnch"> Steffen Münch</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elke%20K.%20Arendt"> Elke K. Additionally, our natural resources are under enormous pressure and the greenhouse gas emission increases yearly with a significant contribution to climate change. Hence, transforming our food systems is of highest priority. Plant-based food products have a lower environmental impact compared to their animal-based counterpart, representing a more sustainable protein source. However, most plant-based protein ingredients, such as soy and pea, are lacking indispensable amino acids and extremely limited in their functionality and, thus, in their food application potential. They are known to have a low solubility in water and change their properties during processing. The low solubility displays the biggest challenge in the development of milk alternatives leading to inferior protein content and protein quality in dairy alternatives on the market. Moreover, plant-based protein ingredients often possess an off-flavour, which makes them less attractive to consumers. EverPro, a plant-protein isolate originated from Brewer’s Spent Grain, the most abundant by-product in the brewing industry, represents the missing piece in the plant protein portfolio. With a protein content of >85%, it is of high nutritional value, including all indispensable amino acids which allows closing the protein quality gap of plant proteins. Moreover, it possesses high techno-functional properties. It is fully soluble in water (101.7 ± 2.9%), has a high fat absorption capacity (182.4 ± 1.9%), and a foaming capacity which is superior to soy protein or pea protein. This makes EverPro suitable for a vast range of food applications. Furthermore, it does not cause changes in viscosity during heating and cooling of dispersions, such as beverages. Besides its outstanding nutritional and functional characteristics, the production of EverPro has a much lower environmental impact compared to dairy or other plant protein ingredients. Life cycle assessment analysis showed that EverPro has the lowest impact on global warming compared to soy protein isolate, pea protein isolate, whey protein isolate, and egg white powder. It also contributes significantly less to freshwater eutrophication, marine eutrophication and land use compared the protein sources mentioned above. EverPro is the prime example of sustainable ingredients, and the type of plant protein the food industry was waiting for: nutritious, multi-functional, and environmentally friendly. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=plant-based%20protein" title="plant-based protein">plant-based protein</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=upcycled" title=" upcycled"> upcycled</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=brewers%27%20spent%20grain" title=" brewers' spent grain"> brewers' spent grain</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=low%20environmental%20impact" title=" low environmental impact"> low environmental impact</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=highly%20functional%20ingredient" title=" highly functional ingredient"> highly functional ingredient</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162371/everpro-as-the-missing-piece-in-the-plant-protein-portfolio-to-aid-the-transformation-to-sustainable-food-systems" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162371.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">80</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">77</span> Double Fourier Series Applied to Supraharmonic Determination: The Specific Cases of a Boost and an Interleaved Boost Converter Used as Active Power Factor Correctors</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Erzen%20Muharemi">Erzen Muharemi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Emmanuel%20De%20Jaeger"> Emmanuel De Jaeger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jos%20Knockaert"> Jos Knockaert</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The work presented here investigates the modeling of power electronics converters in terms of their harmonic production. They had come in from the goldfields at Arltunga where they had been living, and Topsy’s husband, Welsh-born Bill Smith, had recently died. Sergeant Stott, the local policeman and sub-protector of Aborigines for the region, erected a tin shed for Topsy and the children to live in, which became known as the Bungalow for half-castes. Over the years that followed many more children of mixed descent were removed from their families and brought to live at the Bungalow until, a decade later, sixty children were growing up there, cared for predominantly by Topsy Smith; Ida Standley who was the first, white schoolteacher for the town; and Sergeant Stott. The story of the Bungalow is pivotal to the foundations of social relations in the town of Alice Springs and beyond. At the same time, it is little known, recognised or understood locally, let alone more broadly. This is typical of the dominant historic narratives that have emerged out of the Australian colonial project and led to ‘the Great Australian Silence.’ The term was coined by Australian anthropologist WEH Stanner in his 1968 Boyer Lectures, in reference to the omission of the Aboriginal experience from the dominant narratives of the nation’s history. In his lecture, he attributed this silence to something that may have begun as a simple forgetting of other possible views which turned, under habit and over time, into something like a cult of forgetfulness practised on a national scale. This doctoral project, underpinned by a methodology of practice-led research, engages a bricolage of methods including archival research, ethnography, and oral histories to research the bungalow and the context in which it operated. Techniques of fictocriticism, speculative biography, autoethnography, and archival poetics are then engaged to write the research outcomes into a post-colonial, multi-genre work of creative non-fiction that speaks into the silences in the archives. The overall intent of this doctoral work is to explore and demonstrate how techniques of creative non-fiction can be used to rewrite narratives of Australian colonial history that resonate beyond the academy, thus contributing to the bank of post-colonial stories and working towards a more just, honest and inclusive national ‘memory’ and identity. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Australian%20history" title="Australian history">Australian history</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=collective%20memory" title=" collective memory"> collective memory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=creative%20non-fiction" title=" creative non-fiction"> creative non-fiction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=postcolonialism" title=" postcolonialism"> postcolonialism</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/118344/revising-australias-collective-memory-through-post-colonial-storytelling" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/118344.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">115</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">71</span> Use of Nanoclay in Various Modified Polyolefins</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20Tup%C3%BD">Michael Tupý</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alice%20Tesa%C5%99%C3%ADkov%C3%A1-Svobodov%C3%A1"> Alice Tesaříková-Svobodová</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dagmar%20M%C4%9B%C5%99%C3%ADnsk%C3%A1"> Dagmar Měřínská</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=V%C3%ADt%20Petr%C3%A1nek"> Vít Petránek</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), Polyethylene (vinyl acetate) (EVA) and Surlyn (modif-PE) nano composite samples were prepared with montmorillonite fillers Cloisite 93A and Dellite 67G. The properties of samples were evaluated by dynamical mechanical analysis (E* modulus at 30 °C) and by the measurement of tensile properties (stress and strain at break). <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polyethylene" title="polyethylene">polyethylene</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polypropylene" title=" polypropylene"> polypropylene</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polyethylene%28vinyl%20acetate%29" title=" polyethylene(vinyl acetate)"> polyethylene(vinyl acetate)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=clay" title=" clay"> clay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nanocomposite" title=" nanocomposite"> nanocomposite</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=montmorillonite" title=" montmorillonite"> montmorillonite</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/13152/use-of-nanoclay-in-various-modified-polyolefins" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/13152.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">535</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">70</span> Comparison of Processing Conditions for Plasticized PVC and PVB</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20Tup%C3%BD">Michael Tupý</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jaroslav%20C%C3%ADsa%C5%99"> Jaroslav Císař</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pavel%20Mokrej%C5%A1"> Pavel Mokrejš</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dagmar%20M%C4%9B%C5%99%C3%ADnsk%C3%A1"> Dagmar Měřínská</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alice%20Tesa%C5%99%C3%ADkov%C3%A1-Svobodov%C3%A1"> Alice Tesaříková-Svobodová</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The worldwide problem is that the recycled PVB is wildly stored in landfills. For the elastic foundation, the most widely used models are one-parameter mechanical models or two-parameter models to include continuity and cohesion of typical foundations, with the two-parameter usually considered the better of the two. Knowledge of free vibration characteristics of beams on an elastic foundation is considered necessary for optimal design solutions in many engineering applications, and in this work, the efficient and accurate variational iteration method is developed and used to calculate natural frequencies of a Timoshenko beam on a two-parameter foundation. The variational iteration method is a technique capable of dealing with some linear and non-linear problems in an easy and efficient way. The calculations are compared with those using a finite-element method and other analytical solutions, and it is shown that the results are accurate and are obtained efficiently. It is found that the effect of the presence of the two-parameter foundation is to increase the beam’s natural frequencies and this is thought to be because of the shear-layer stiffness, which has an effect on the elastic stiffness. By setting the two-parameter model’s stiffness parameter to zero, it is possible to obtain a one-parameter foundation model, and so, comparison between the two foundation models is also made. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Timoshenko%20beam" title="Timoshenko beam">Timoshenko beam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=variational%20iteration%20method" title=" variational iteration method"> variational iteration method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=two-parameter%20elastic%20foundation%20model" title=" two-parameter elastic foundation model"> two-parameter elastic foundation model</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/95779/vibration-of-a-beam-on-an-elastic-foundation-using-the-variational-iteration-method" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/95779.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">194</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">68</span> Mechanical Properties of Recycled Plasticized PVB/PVC Blends</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20Tup%C3%BD">Michael Tupý</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dagmar%20M%C4%9B%C5%99%C3%ADnsk%C3%A1"> Dagmar Měřínská</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alice%20Tesa%C5%99%C3%ADkov%C3%A1-Svobodov%C3%A1"> Alice Tesaříková-Svobodová</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Christian%20Carrot"> Christian Carrot</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Caroline%20Pillon"> Caroline Pillon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=V%C3%ADt%20Petr%C3%A1nek"> Vít Petránek</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The mechanical properties of blends consisting of plasticized poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) and plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) are studied, in order to evaluate the possibility of using recycled PVB waste derived from windshields. Dubai has been taking a lead on this by making it mandatory for BIM to be adopted for all projects that involve complex architecture designs. This is because BIM is a dynamic process that assists all stakeholders in monitoring the project status throughout different project phases with great transparency. It focuses on utilizing information technology to improve collaboration among project participants during the entire life cycle of the project from the initial design, to the supply chain, resource allocation, construction and all productivity requirements. In view of this trend, the paper examines the extent of applying BIM in the State of Kuwait, by exploring practitioners’ perspectives on BIM, especially their perspectives on main barriers and main advantages. To this end structured interviews were carried out based on questionnaires and with a range of different construction professionals. The results revealed that practitioners perceive improved communication and mitigated project risks by encouraged collaboration between project participants. However, it was also observed that the full implementation of BIM in the State of Kuwait requires concerted efforts to make clients demanding BIM, counteract resistance to change among construction professionals and offer more training for design team members. This paper forms part of an on-going research effort on BIM and its application in the State of Kuwait and it is on this basis that further research on the topic is proposed. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=building%20information%20modeling" title="building information modeling">building information modeling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=BIM" title=" BIM"> BIM</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=construction%20industry" title=" construction industry"> construction industry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kuwait" title=" Kuwait"> Kuwait</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40412/building-information-modeling-and-its-application-in-the-state-of-kuwait" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40412.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">378</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">66</span> The Effects of Resident Fathers on the Children in South Africa: The Case of Selected Household in Golf View, Alice Town, Eastern Cape Province</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gabriel%20Acha%20Ekobi">Gabriel Acha Ekobi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Fathers play a crucial role in meeting family needs such as affection, protection, and socio-economic needs of children in the world in general and South Africa in particular. Fathers’ role in children’s lives is important in providing socialization, leadership skills, and teaching societal norms. Fathers influence is very significant for children’s well-being and development as it provides the child with moral lessons, guidance, and economic support. However, there is a paucity of information regarding the effects of fathers on children. In addition, despite legal frameworks such as the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the child (1999) introduced by the African Union to promote child rights nevertheless, it appears maltreatment, abuse, and poor health care continue to face children. Also, the Constitution of 1996 of the Republic of South Africa (Section 28 of the Bill of Rights) and the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 were introduced by the South African government to foster the rights of children. Nevertheless, these legal frameworks remain ineffective as children’s rights are still neglected by resident fathers. This paper explores the impact of resident fathers on children in the Golf View, Alice town of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. A qualitative research method and an exploratory research design were utilized, and 30 participants took part in the study. The participants comprised of single mothers or caregivers of children, resident fathers and social workers. Eighteen (18) single mothers or caregivers, 10 resident fathers, and two (2) social workers participated in the study. Data was collected using semi-structured and unstructured interviews and analysed thematically. Two main themes were identified: the role of fathers on children and the effects of resident fathers on children. The study found that the presence of fathers in the lives of children prevented psychosocial issues such as stress, depression, violence, and substance abuse. A father’s presence in a household was crucial in instilling moral values in children. This allowed them to build positive characters such as respect, kindness, humility, and compassion. Children with more involved fathers tend to have fewer impulse control problems, longer attention spans, and a higher level of sociability. The study concludes that the fathers’ role prevented anxiety, depression, and stress and led to the improvement of children’s education performance. Nevertheless, the absence of a father as a role model to act as a leader by instilling moral values hinders positive behaviours in children. This study recommended that occupational training and life skills programmes should be introduced by the government and other stakeholders to empower the fathers as this might provide the platform for them to bring up their children properly. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=children" title="children">children</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fathering" title=" fathering"> fathering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=household" title=" household"> household</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=resident" title=" resident"> resident</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=single%20parent" title=" single parent"> single parent</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183228/the-effects-of-resident-fathers-on-the-children-in-south-africa-the-case-of-selected-household-in-golf-view-alice-town-eastern-cape-province" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183228.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">52</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">65</span> Survival Chances and Costs after Heart Attacks: An Instrumental Variable Approach</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alice%20Sanwald">Alice Sanwald</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thomas%20Schober"> Thomas Schober</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> We analyze mortality and follow-up costs of heart attack patients using administrative data from Austria (2002-2011). To account for the nonrandom selection of patients into hospitals, we exploit individuals' place of residence as a source of exogenous variation in an instrumental variable framework. We find that the initial admission to specialized hospitals increases patients' survival chances substantially. The effect on 3-year mortality is -9.5 percentage points. A separation of the sample into subgroups shows the strongest effects in relative terms for patients below the age of 65. We do not find significant effects on longterm inpatient costs and find only marginal increases in outpatient costs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=acute%20myocardial%20infarction" title="acute myocardial infarction">acute myocardial infarction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mortality" title=" mortality"> mortality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=costs" title=" costs"> costs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=instrumental%20variables" title=" instrumental variables"> instrumental variables</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heart%20attack" title=" heart attack"> heart attack</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20741/survival-chances-and-costs-after-heart-attacks-an-instrumental-variable-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20741.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">436</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">64</span> A Project-Based Learning Approach in the Course of 'Engineering Skills' for Undergraduate Engineering Students</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Armin%20Eilaghi">Armin Eilaghi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ahmad%20Sedaghat"> Ahmad Sedaghat</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hayder%20Abdurazzak"> Hayder Abdurazzak</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fadi%20Alkhatib"> Fadi Alkhatib</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shiva%20Sadeghi"> Shiva Sadeghi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Martin%20Jaeger"> Martin Jaeger</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A summary of experiences, recommendations, and lessons learnt in the application of PBL in the course of “Engineering Skills” in the School of Engineering at Australian College of Kuwait in Kuwait is presented. Four projects were introduced as part of the PBL course “Engineering Skills” to 24 students in School of Engineering. These students were grouped in 6 teams to develop their skills in 10 learning outcomes. The learning outcomes targeted skills such as drawing, design, modeling, manufacturing and analysis at a preliminary level; and also some life line learning and teamwork skills as these students were exposed for the first time to the PBL (project based learning). The students were assessed for 10 learning outcomes of the course and students’ feedback was collected using an anonymous survey at the end of the course. Analyzing the students’ feedbacks, it is observed that 67% of students preferred multiple smaller projects than a single big project because it provided them with more time and attention focus to improve their “soft skills” including project management, risk assessment, and failure analysis. Moreover, it is found that 63% of students preferred to work with different team members during the course to improve their professional communication skills. Among all, 62% of students believed that working with team members from other departments helped them to increase the innovative aspect of projects and improved their overall performance. However, 70% of students counted extra time needed to regenerate momentum with the new teams as the major challenge. Project based learning provided a suitable platform for introducing students to professional engineering practice and meeting the needs of students, employers and educators. It was found that students achieved their 10 learning outcomes and gained new skills developed in this PBL unit. This was reflected in their portfolios and assessment survey. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=project-based%20learning" title="project-based learning">project-based learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=engineering%20skills" title=" engineering skills"> engineering skills</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=undergraduate%20engineering" title=" undergraduate engineering"> undergraduate engineering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=problem-based%20learning" title=" problem-based learning"> problem-based learning</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/100014/a-project-based-learning-approach-in-the-course-of-engineering-skills-for-undergraduate-engineering-students" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/100014.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">165</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">63</span> Photocaged Carbohydrates: Versatile Tools for Biotechnological Applications</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claus%20Bier">Claus Bier</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dennis%20Binder"> Dennis Binder</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexander%20Gruenberger"> Alexander Gruenberger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dagmar%20Drobietz"> Dagmar Drobietz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dietrich%20Kohlheyer"> Dietrich Kohlheyer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anita%20Loeschcke"> Anita Loeschcke</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Karl%20Erich%20Jaeger"> Karl Erich Jaeger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thomas%20Drepper"> Thomas Drepper</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joerg%20Pietruszka"> Joerg Pietruszka</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Light absorbing chromophoric systems are important optogenetic tools for biotechnical and biophysical investigations. Processes such as fluorescence or photolysis can be triggered by light-absorption of chromophores. These play a central role in life science. Photocaged compounds belong to such chromophoric systems. The photo-labile protecting groups enable them to release biologically active substances with high temporal and spatial resolution. The properties of photocaged compounds are specified by the characteristics of the caging group as well as the characteristics of the linked effector molecule. In our research, we work with different types of photo-labile protecting groups and various effector molecules giving us possible access to a large library of caged compounds. As a function of the caged effector molecule, a nearly limitless number of biological systems can be directed. Our main interest focusses on photocaging carbohydrates (e.g. arabinose) and their derivatives as effector molecules. Based on these resulting photocaged compounds a precisely controlled photoinduced gene expression will give us access to studies of numerous biotechnological and synthetic biological applications. It could be shown, that the regulation of gene expression via light is possible with photocaged carbohydrates achieving a higher-order control over this processes. With the one-step cleavable photocaged carbohydrate, a homogeneous expression was achieved in comparison to free carbohydrates. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bacterial%20gene%20expression" title="bacterial gene expression">bacterial gene expression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biotechnology" title=" biotechnology"> biotechnology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=caged%20compounds" title=" caged compounds"> caged compounds</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=carbohydrates" title=" carbohydrates"> carbohydrates</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optogenetics" title=" optogenetics"> optogenetics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=photo-removable%20protecting%20group" title=" photo-removable protecting group"> photo-removable protecting group</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/55557/photocaged-carbohydrates-versatile-tools-for-biotechnological-applications" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/55557.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">227</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">62</span> Excited State Structural Dynamics of Retinal Isomerization Revealed by a Femtosecond X-Ray Laser </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Przemyslaw%20Nogly">Przemyslaw Nogly</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tobias%20Weinert"> Tobias Weinert</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Daniel%20James"> Daniel James</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sergio%20Carbajo"> Sergio Carbajo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dmitry%20Ozerov"> Dmitry Ozerov</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Antonia%20Furrer"> Antonia Furrer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dardan%20Gashi"> Dardan Gashi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Veniamin%20Borin"> Veniamin Borin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Petr%20Skopintsev"> Petr Skopintsev</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kathrin%20Jaeger"> Kathrin Jaeger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Karol%20Nass"> Karol Nass</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Petra%20Bath"> Petra Bath</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Robert%20Bosman"> Robert Bosman</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jason%20Koglin"> Jason Koglin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Matthew%20Seaberg"> Matthew Seaberg</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thomas%20Lane"> Thomas Lane</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Demet%20Kekilli"> Demet Kekilli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Steffen%20Br%C3%BCnle"> Steffen Brünle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tomoyuki%20Tanaka"> Tomoyuki Tanaka</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wenting%20Wu"> Wenting Wu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Christopher%20Milne"> Christopher Milne</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thomas%20A.%20White"> Thomas A. We studied the sub-picosecond structural dynamics of retinal isomerization in the light-driven proton pump bacteriorhodopsin using an X-ray laser. Twenty snapshots with near-atomic spatial and temporal resolution in the femtosecond regime show how the excited all-trans retinal samples conformational states within the protein binding pocket prior to passing through a highly-twisted geometry and emerging in the 13-cis conformation. The aspartic acid residues and functional water molecules in proximity of the retinal Schiff base respond collectively to formation and decay of the initial excited state and retinal isomerization. These observations reveal how the protein scaffold guides this remarkably efficient photochemical reaction. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bacteriorhodopsin" title="bacteriorhodopsin">bacteriorhodopsin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=free-electron%20laser" title=" free-electron laser"> free-electron laser</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=retinal%20isomerization%20mechanism" title=" retinal isomerization mechanism"> retinal isomerization mechanism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=time-resolved%20crystallography" title=" time-resolved crystallography"> time-resolved crystallography</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/90555/excited-state-structural-dynamics-of-retinal-isomerization-revealed-by-a-femtosecond-x-ray-laser" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/90555.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">248</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">61</span> Clostridium Glycolicum Abdominal Infection in a Patient with Small Bowel Obstruction</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Benedikt%20Munzar">Benedikt Munzar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jagraj%20Singh"> Jagraj Singh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alice%20Mei"> Alice Mei</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=David%20Musheyev"> David Musheyev</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sandeep%20Gandhi"> Sandeep Gandhi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Clostridium is a gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming rod that is not commonly identified as a primary human pathogen. Here is presented a case of a 60-year-old patient with a history of opioid use disorder who underwent a number of abdominal surgeries for small bowel obstruction. His hospital course was complicated by Clostridium glycolicum infection, resulting in an acute abdomen. The patient clinically improved with antibiotic therapy. A thorough review of the National Institute of Health database revealed that only a small number of cases have been reported since 2007, with the last postsurgical cases documented in 2009 and the last clinical case documented in 2012. Clostridium glycolicum infections have been noted in patients with immunosuppressive conditions or those undergoing medical treatments that compromise immune function. This case was unusual due to the patient being immunocompetent. We suggest that a case of an acute abdomen should consider this organism as an etiological agent. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=acute%20abdomen" title="acute abdomen">acute abdomen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bacterial%20infection" title=" bacterial infection"> bacterial infection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=clostridium%20glycolicum" title=" clostridium glycolicum"> clostridium glycolicum</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Meckel%E2%80%99s%20diverticulum" title=" Meckel’s diverticulum"> Meckel’s diverticulum</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pneumoperitoneum" title=" pneumoperitoneum"> pneumoperitoneum</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=small%20bowel%20obstruction" title=" small bowel obstruction"> small bowel obstruction</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/189319/clostridium-glycolicum-abdominal-infection-in-a-patient-with-small-bowel-obstruction" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/189319.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">29</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">60</span> KSVD-SVM Approach for Spontaneous Facial Expression Recognition</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dawood%20Al%20Chanti">Dawood Al Chanti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alice%20Caplier"> Alice Caplier</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Sparse representations of signals have received a great deal of attention in recent years. In this paper, the interest of using sparse representation as a mean for performing sparse discriminative analysis between spontaneous facial expressions is demonstrated. An automatic facial expressions recognition system is presented. It uses a KSVD-SVM approach which is made of three main stages: A pre-processing and feature extraction stage, which solves the problem of shared subspace distribution based on the random projection theory, to obtain low dimensional discriminative and reconstructive features; A dictionary learning and sparse coding stage, which uses the KSVD model to learn discriminative under or over dictionaries for sparse coding; Finally a classification stage, which uses a SVM classifier for facial expressions recognition. Our main concern is to be able to recognize non-basic affective states and non-acted expressions. Extensive experiments on the JAFFE static acted facial expressions database but also on the DynEmo dynamic spontaneous facial expressions database exhibit very good recognition rates. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dictionary%20learning" title="dictionary learning">dictionary learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=random%20projection" title=" random projection"> random projection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pose%20and%20spontaneous%20facial%20expression" title=" pose and spontaneous facial expression"> pose and spontaneous facial expression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sparse%20representation" title=" sparse representation"> sparse representation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/51683/ksvd-svm-approach-for-spontaneous-facial-expression-recognition" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/51683.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">305</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">59</span> Gold–M Heterobimetallic Complexes: Synthesis and Initial Reactivity Studies</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Caroline%20Alice%20Rouget-Virbel">Caroline Alice Rouget-Virbel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=F.%20Dean%20Toste"> F. Dean Toste</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Heterobimetallic systems have been precedented in a wide array of bioinorganic and heterogeneous catalytic settings, in which cooperative bond-breaking and bond-forming events mediated by neighboring metal sites have been proposed but are challenging to study and characterize. Heterodinuclear transition-metal catalysis has recently emerged as a promising strategy to tackle challenging chemical transformations, including C−C and C−X couplings as well as small molecule activation. It has been shown that these reactions can traverse nontraditional mechanisms, reactivities, and selectivities when homo- and heterobimetallic systems are employed. Moreover, stoichiometric studies of transmetallation from gold complexes have demonstrated that R transfer from PPh3–Au(I)R to Cp- and Cp*-ligated group 8/9 complexes is a viable elementary step. With these considerations in mind, we hypothesized that heterobimetallic Au–M complexes could serve as a viable and tunable catalyst platform to explore mechanisms and reactivity. In this work, heterobimetallic complexes containing Au(I) centers tethered to Ir(III) and Rh(III) piano stool moieties were synthesized and characterized. Preliminary application of these complexes to a catalytic allylic arylation reaction demonstrates bimetallic cooperativity relative to their monomeric metal components. <p
