he sent<MG649> him to them last<MG2078> <i>of all,</i> saying<MG3004>, &#8216;They will respect<MG1788> my son<MG5207>.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>But those<MG1565> vine-growers<MG1092> said<MG3004> to one<MG1438> another<MG1438>, &#8216;This<MG3778> is the heir<MG2818>; come<MG1205>, let&#8217;s kill<MG615> him, and the inheritance<MG2817> will be ours<MG1473>!&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And they took<MG2983> him and killed<MG615> him, and threw<MG1544b> him out<MG1544b> of the vineyard<MG290>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>What<MG5101> will the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>owner<MG2962> of the vineyard<MG290> do<MG4160>? He will come<MG2064> and put<MG622> the vine-growers<MG1092> to<MG622> death<MG622>, and give<MG1325> the vineyard<MG290> to others<MG243>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Have you not even<MG3761> read<MG314> this<MG3778> Scripture<MG1124>: <t><p class="indent1">&#8216;A STONE<MG3037> WHICH<MG3739> THE BUILDERS<MG3618> REJECTED<MG593>, <t><p class="indent1">THIS<MG3778> HAS BECOME<MG1096> THE <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>CHIEF<MG2776> CORNERSTONE<MG1137>; <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>THIS<MG3778> CAME<MG1096> ABOUT FROM THE LORD<MG2962>, <t><p class="indent1">AND IT IS MARVELOUS<MG2298> IN OUR EYES<MG3788>&#8217;?&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And they were seeking<MG2212> to seize<MG2902> Him, and <i>yet</i> they feared<MG5399> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>people<MG3793>, for they understood<MG1097> that He told<MG3004> the parable<MG3850b> against<MG4314> them. And <i>so</i> they left<MG863> Him and went<MG565> away<MG565>. <p class="hdg">Jesus Answers the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Scribes</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then<MG2532> they *sent<MG649> some<MG5100> of the Pharisees<MG5330> and Herodians<MG2265> to Him in<MG2443> order<MG2443> to<MG2443> trap<MG64> Him in a statement<MG3056>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>They came<MG2064> and *said<MG3004> to Him, &#8220;Teacher<MG1320>, we know<MG3609a> that You are truthful<MG227> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>do not care<MG3199> what anyone<MG3762> thinks; for You <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>are not partial<MG991, 4383> to anyone<MG444>, but You teach<MG1321> the way<MG3598> of God<MG2316> in truth<MG225>. Is it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>permissible<MG1832> to pay<MG1325> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>poll-tax<MG2778b> to Caesar<MG2541>, or<MG2228> not? <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Are we to pay<MG1325>, or<MG2228> not pay<MG1325>?&#8221; But He, knowing<MG3609a> their hypocrisy<MG5272>, said<MG3004> to them, &#8220;Why<MG5101> are you testing<MG3985> Me? Bring<MG5342> Me a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>denarius<MG1220> to look<MG3708> at.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And they brought<MG5342> <i>one.</i> And He *said<MG3004> to them, &#8220;Whose<MG5101> image<MG1504> and inscription<MG1923> is this<MG3778>?&#8221; And they said<MG3004> to Him, &#8220;Caesar&#8217;s<MG2541>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004> to them, &#8220;Pay<MG591> to Caesar<MG2541> the things that are Caesar&#8217;s<MG2541>, and to God<MG2316> the things that are God&#8217;s<MG2316>.&#8221; And they were utterly<MG1569b> amazed<MG1569b> at Him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><i>Some</i> Sadducees<MG4523> (who<MG3748> say<MG3004> that there is no<MG3361> resurrection<MG386>) *came<MG2064> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Jesus, and <i>began</i> questioning<MG1905> Him, saying<MG3004>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>&#8220;Teacher<MG1320>, Moses<MG3475> wrote<MG1125> for us that if<MG1437> a man&#8217;s<MG5100> brother<MG80> dies<MG599> and leaves<MG2641> behind<MG2641> a wife<MG1135> and does not leave<MG863> a child<MG5043>, his brother<MG80> is to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>marry<MG2983> the wife<MG1135> and raise<MG1817> up<MG1817> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>children<MG4690> for his brother<MG80>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>There were seven<MG2033> brothers<MG80>; and the first<MG4413> took<MG2983> a wife<MG1135>, and died<MG599> leaving<MG863> no<MG3756> children<MG4690>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>The second<MG1208> one<MG1208> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>married<MG2983> her, and died<MG599> leaving<MG2641> behind<MG2641> no<MG3361> children<MG4690>; and the third<MG5154> likewise<MG5615>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>and <i>so</i> the seven<MG2033> <i>together</i> left<MG863> no<MG3756> children<MG4690>. Last<MG2078> of all<MG3956> the woman<MG1135> also<MG2532> died<MG599>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>In the resurrection<MG386>, which<MG5101> one&#8217;s<MG846> wife<MG1135> will she be? For <i>each of</i> the seven<MG2033> had her as <i>his</i> wife.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> said<MG5346> to them, &#8220;Is this<MG3778> not the reason<MG1223> you are mistaken<MG4105>, that you do not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>understand<MG3609a> the Scriptures<MG1124> nor<MG3366> the power<MG1411> of God<MG2316>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>For when<MG3752> they rise<MG450> from the dead<MG3498>, they neither<MG3777> marry<MG1060> nor<MG3777> are given<MG1061a> in<MG1061a> marriage<MG1061a>, but are like<MG5613> angels<MG32a> in heaven<MG3772>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>regarding<MG4012> the<MG3754> fact<MG3754> that<MG3754> the dead<MG3498> rise<MG1453>, have you not read<MG314> in the book<MG976> of Moses<MG3475>, in <i>the passage about</i> the <i>burning</i> bush<MG942>, how<MG4459> God<MG2316> spoke<MG3004> to him, saying<MG3004>, &#8216;I AM THE GOD<MG2316> OF ABRAHAM<MG11>, THE GOD<MG2316> OF ISAAC<MG2464>, AND THE GOD<MG2316> OF JACOB<MG2384>&#8217;? <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>He is not the God<MG2316> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>of the dead<MG3498>, but of the living<MG2198>; you are greatly<MG4183> mistaken<MG4105>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>One<MG1520> of the scribes<MG1122> came<MG4334> up<MG4334> and heard<MG191> them arguing<MG4802>, and recognizing<MG3708> that He had answered<MG611> them well<MG2573>, asked<MG1905> Him, &#8220;What<MG4169> commandment<MG1785> is the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>foremost<MG4413> of all<MG3956>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> answered<MG611>, &#8220;The <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>foremost<MG4413> is, &#8216;HEAR<MG191>, ISRAEL<MG2474>! THE LORD<MG2962> IS OUR GOD<MG2316>, THE LORD<MG2962> IS ONE<MG1520>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>AND YOU SHALL LOVE<MG25> THE LORD<MG2962> YOUR GOD<MG2316> WITH ALL<MG3650> YOUR HEART<MG2588>, AND WITH ALL<MG3650> YOUR SOUL<MG5590>, AND WITH ALL<MG3650> YOUR MIND<MG1271>, AND WITH ALL<MG3650> YOUR STRENGTH<MG2479>.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>The second<MG1208> is this<MG3778>: &#8216;YOU SHALL LOVE<MG25> YOUR NEIGHBOR<MG4139> AS YOURSELF<MG4572>.&#8217; There is no<MG3756> other<MG243> commandment<MG1785> greater<MG3173> than these<MG3778>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And the scribe<MG1122> said<MG3004> to Him, &#8220;Well<MG2573> <i>said,</i> Teacher<MG1320>; You have truly<MG1909, 225> stated<MG3004> that HE IS ONE<MG1520>, AND THERE IS NO<MG3756> OTHER<MG243> BESIDES<MG4133> HIM; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>and to love<MG25> Him with all<MG3650> the heart<MG2588>, and with all<MG3650> the understanding<MG4907>, and with all<MG3650> the strength<MG2479>, and to love<MG25> one&#8217;s neighbor<MG4139> as oneself<MG1438>, is much<MG4053> more<MG4053> than all<MG3956> the burnt<MG3646> offerings<MG3646> and sacrifices<MG2378>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>When Jesus<MG2424> saw<MG3708> that he had answered<MG611> intelligently<MG3562>, He said<MG3004> to him, &#8220;You are not far<MG3112> from the kingdom<MG932> of God<MG2316>.&#8221; And <i>then,</i> no<MG3762> one<MG3762> dared<MG5111> any<MG3765> longer<MG3765> to question<MG1905> Him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> responded<MG611> and <i>began</i> saying<MG3004>, as He taught<MG1321> in the temple<MG2413> <i>area,</i> &#8220;How<MG4459> <i>is it that</i> the scribes<MG1122> say<MG3004> that the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>Christ<MG5547> is the son<MG5207> of David<MG1160b>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>David<MG1160b> himself<MG846> said<MG3004> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>in the Holy<MG40> Spirit<MG4151>, <t><p class="indent1">&#8216;THE LORD<MG2962> SAID<MG3004> TO MY LORD<MG2962>, <t><p class="indent1">&#8220;SIT<MG2521> AT MY RIGHT<MG1188> HAND<MG1188>, <t><p class="indent1">UNTIL<MG2193> I PUT<MG5087> YOUR ENEMIES<MG2190> UNDER<MG5270> YOUR FEET<MG4228>.&#8221;&#8217; <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>David<MG1160b> himself<MG846> calls<MG3004> Him &#8216;Lord<MG2962>&#8217;; so<MG2532> in what<MG4159> sense<MG4159> is He his son<MG5207>?&#8221; And the large<MG4183> crowd<MG3793> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>enjoyed<MG2234> listening<MG191> to Him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And in His teaching<MG1322> He was saying<MG3004>: &#8220;Beware<MG991> of the scribes<MG1122> who like<MG2309> to walk<MG4043> around<MG4043> in long<MG4749> robes<MG4749>, and <i>like</i> personal<MG783> greetings<MG783> in the marketplaces<MG58>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>and seats<MG4410> of<MG4410> honor<MG4410> in the synagogues<MG4864>, and places<MG4411> of<MG4411> honor<MG4411> at banquets<MG1173>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>who devour<MG2719> widows&#8217;<MG5503> houses<MG3614>, and for appearance&#8217;s<MG4392> sake<MG4392> offer<MG4336> long<MG3117> prayers<MG4336>.
