The LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430> has not sent<MH7971> you to say<MH559>, ‘You are not to enter<MH935> Egypt<MH4714> to reside<MH1481a> there<MH8033>’; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/43-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>but Baruch<MH1263> the son<MH1121> of Neriah<MH5374> is inciting<MH5496> you against us in<MH4616> order<MH4616> to<MH4616> hand<MH5414, 3027> us over<MH5414> to the Chaldeans<MH3778>, so they will put<MH4191> us to<MH4191> death<MH4191> or exile<MH1540> us to Babylon<MH894>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/43-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So Johanan<MH3076> the son<MH1121> of Kareah<MH7143> and all<MH3605> the commanders<MH8269> of the forces<MH2428>, and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>, did not obey<MH8085> the voice<MH6963> of the LORD<MH3068> to stay<MH3427> in the land<MH776> of Judah<MH3063>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/43-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Instead, Johanan<MH3076> the son<MH1121> of Kareah<MH7143> and all<MH3605> the commanders<MH8269> of the forces<MH2428> took<MH3947> the entire<MH3605> remnant<MH7611> of Judah<MH3063> who<MH834> had returned<MH7725> from all<MH3605> the nations<MH1471> to which<MH834> they had been scattered<MH5080>, in order to reside<MH1481a> in the land<MH776> of Judah<MH3063>— <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/43-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>the men<MH1397>, the women<MH802>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>children<MH2945>, the king’s<MH4428> daughters<MH1323>, and every<MH3605> person<MH5315> whom Nebuzaradan<MH5018> the captain<MH7227b> of the bodyguard<MH2876> had left<MH5117> with Gedaliah<MH1436b> the son<MH1121> of Ahikam<MH296> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>and grandson<MH1121> of Shaphan<MH8227b>, together with Jeremiah<MH3414> the prophet<MH5030> and Baruch<MH1263> the son<MH1121> of Neriah<MH5374>— <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/43-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>and they entered<MH935> the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714> (for they did not obey<MH8085> the voice<MH6963> of the LORD<MH3068>) and went<MH935> in<MH935> as far<MH5704> as Tahpanhes<MH8471>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/43-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to Jeremiah<MH3414> in Tahpanhes<MH8471>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/43-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>“Take<MH3947> <i>some</i> large<MH1419> stones<MH68> in your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>hands<MH3027> and hide<MH2934> them in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>mortar<MH4423> in the brick<MH4404> <i>terrace</i> which<MH834> is at the entrance<MH6607> of Pharaoh’s<MH6547> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>palace<MH1004> in Tahpanhes<MH8471>, in the sight<MH5869> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>some<MH376> <i>of the</i> Jews<MH3064>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/43-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and say<MH559> to them, ‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: “Behold<MH2009>, I am going to send<MH7971> <i>men</i> and get<MH3947> My servant<MH5650> Nebuchadnezzar<MH5019> the king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894>, and I am going to set<MH7760> his throne<MH3678> over<MH4605> these<MH428> stones<MH68> that I have hidden<MH2934>; and he will spread<MH5186> his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>canopy<MH8237> over<MH5921> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/43-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>He will also come<MH935> and strike<MH5221> the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>; those who<MH834> are <i>meant</i> for death<MH4194> <i>will be given over</i> to death<MH4194>, and those for captivity<MH7628b> to captivity<MH7628b>, and those for the sword<MH2719> to the sword<MH2719>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/43-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>I shall set<MH3341> fire<MH784> to the temples<MH1004> of the gods<MH430> of Egypt<MH4714>, and he will burn<MH8313> them and take<MH7617> them captive<MH7617>.
