Esta obra, en cambio, es muy distinta. No fue encargo de <strong>Napoleón,</strong> si no del décimo duque de Hamilton, gran admirador del emperador.</p> <p>Los condicionantes que hacen que esta pintura varíe del carácter heroico del protagonista es el contexto, el paso del tiempo y el espacio, interno en este caso, y por ende más íntimo, donde aparece representado.<br> En 1812, fecha de la pintura, <strong>Napoleón tenía ya 43 años,</strong> y había vivido su primera derrota contra Rusia, lo que supuso un punto de inflexión en el transcurso de la invasión napoleónica.</p> <p>Entre la edad, esa primera derrota, sus preocupaciones… <strong>Napoleón aparece con una mirada nostálgica.</strong> Parece esforzarse por mostrar buena cara, pero una sombra cruza su rostro. Destaca su gesto tan característico, ocultando una de sus manos en el pecho, debajo del chaleco. <strong>Hay diferentes teorías para explicar esta peculiar costumbre,</strong> asociadas a circunstancias físicas: una herida de guerra que le dejó la mano deformada y por eso no quería que se viera, o una presión continúa para aliviar su dolor crónico en el estómago. Sin embargo, es probable que ninguna de estas sea el verdadero motivo, que podría ser en realidad de origen cultural, para entenderlo debemos remontarnos a la Antigua Grecia, cuando <strong>Esquines,</strong> un político y orador ateniense, declaró que hablar manteniendo una mano bajo la capa simbolizaba nobleza y modestia. <strong>Napoleón,</strong> que siempre fue un enamorado de las culturas griegas y romanas, tal vez quisiera adoptar una de esas posturas para sus retratos (aunque de modesto tuviera más bien poco).</p> <p>Si nos fijamos en algunas sutilezas del espacio en el que se encuentra, su estudio, ayudan a potenciar estas <strong>horas bajas del emperador:</strong> papeleo y velas prácticamente consumidas, lo que sugiere que ha estado muchas horas frente a su escritorio, puede que incluso haya pasado la noche en vela (nunca mejor dicho), fruto de sus problemas, tanto políticos como personales.</p> <p>En el suelo, en un pergamino enrollado,
