Zechariah<MH2148a> on the fourth<MH702> <i>day</i> of the ninth<MH8671> month<MH2320>, <i>which is</i> Chislev<MH3691>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Now <i>the town of</i> Bethel<MH1008> had sent<MH7971> Sharezer<MH8272> and Regemmelech<MH7278> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>their men<MH376> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>seek<MH2470b> the favor<MH6440> of the LORD<MH3068>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>speaking<MH559> to the priests<MH3548> who<MH834> <i>belong</i> to the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>, and to the prophets<MH5030>, saying<MH559>, “Shall I weep<MH1058> in the fifth<MH2549> month<MH2320> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>and fast<MH5144a>, as I have done<MH6213a> these<MH2088> many<MH4100> years<MH8141>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635> came<MH1961> to me, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>“Say<MH559> to all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> of the land<MH776> and to the priests<MH3548>, ‘When<MH3588> you fasted<MH6684> and mourned<MH5594> in the fifth<MH2549> and seventh<MH7637> <i>months</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>these<MH2088> seventy<MH7657> years<MH8141>, was it actually<MH6684> for Me that you fasted<MH6684>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And when<MH3588> you eat<MH398> and drink<MH8354>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>do you not eat<MH398> for yourselves and drink<MH8354> for yourselves? <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Are <i>these</i> not the words<MH1697> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> proclaimed<MH7121> by the former<MH7223> prophets<MH5030>, when Jerusalem<MH3389> was inhabited<MH3427> and carefree<MH7961> along with its cities<MH5892b> around<MH5439> it, and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>Negev<MH5045> and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>foothills<MH8219> were inhabited<MH3427>?’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to Zechariah<MH2148a>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>“This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635> has said<MH559>: ‘Dispense<MH8199> true<MH571> justice<MH4941> and practice<MH6213a> kindness<MH2617a> and compassion<MH7356> each<MH376> to his brother<MH251>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and do not oppress<MH6231> the widow<MH490> or the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>orphan<MH3490>, the stranger<MH1616> or the poor<MH6041>; and do not devise<MH2803> evil<MH7463a> in your hearts<MH3824> against one<MH376> another<MH312>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But they refused<MH3985> to pay<MH7181> attention<MH7181>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>turned<MH5414> a stubborn<MH5637> shoulder<MH3802> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>plugged<MH3513> their ears<MH241> from hearing<MH8085>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>They also made<MH7760> their hearts<MH3820> <i>as hard as</i> a diamond<MH8068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>so<MH4480> that<MH4480> they could not<MH4480> hear<MH8085> the Law<MH8451> and the words<MH1697> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635> had sent<MH7971> by His Spirit<MH7307> through<MH3027> the former<MH7223> prophets<MH5030>; therefore great<MH1419> wrath<MH7110a> came<MH1961> from the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> He called<MH7121> and they would not listen<MH8085>, so<MH3651> they called<MH7121> and I would not listen<MH8085>,” says<MH559> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/7-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>“but I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>scattered<MH5590> them with<MH5590> a<MH5590> storm<MH5590> wind<MH5590> among<MH5921> all<MH3605> the nations<MH1471> whom<MH834> they did not know<MH3045>.
