A humble solution, through the profound world of acupressure, a timeless healing technique that finds its place in the serene settings of a town in Makawao on the island of Maui.

In the hands of trauma-informed care practitioners and holistic nurses, acupressure is a compassionate embrace aiding those battling the storms of grief, loss, and emotional turmoil.

This article unveils the power of acupressure as a pivotal element in holistic health, offering a beacon of hope and brain wellness to everyone, particularly the neurodiverse and cultural communities.

The Power of Acupressure in Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-informed care, a holistic approach that recognizes and responds to the effects of all types of trauma, is pivotal in fostering healing and resilience. At the heart of this approach lies acupressure, a practice deeply rooted in the belief that the body can heal itself when supported correctly.

Acupressure, an ancient healing technique originating from traditional Chinese medicine, involves the application of gentle pressure to specific points on the body. This non-invasive method is celebrated for its ability to alleviate physical pain and emotional distress.

Acupressure Points for Healing: Grief, Emotions, and Physical Pain

Delving deeper into the healing journey, let’s explore specific acupressure points that are particularly effective for:

Coping with loss

Emotional balance

Grieving process

Finding closure

These points, accessible and simple to use, can be a source of immense relief and comfort.

Heart 7 (HT7): “Spirit Gate”

Located on the wrist, this point is known for its ability to calm the mind and soothe emotional distress. HT7 is also known to calm the spirit, regulate and tonify the heart. Stimulating HT7 is particularly beneficial for those struggling with insomnia or anxiety due to grief or emotional upheaval. It helps in restoring a sense of peace and emotional balance.

Lung 1 (LU1): “Middle Palace”

Situated near the chest area, LU1 is essential in addressing feelings of sadness and loss. It’s believed to help open up the chest, enhancing breathing and allowing for the release of pent-up verbal emotions.

This point is especially therapeutic during the grieving process, aiding individuals in processing and expressing their feelings, and reducing oppression and fullness of the chest.

Liver 3 (LV3): “Great Rushing”

Found on the foot, between the big toe and the second toe, LV3 is a powerful point for managing stress and anger, emotions often associated with grief. Stimulating this point clears the head and eyes and helps ensure a smooth flow of energy, which is crucial for emotional balance and physical well-being such as the gastrointestinal and genito-urinary systems.

Pericardium 6 (PC6) – “Inner Pass”

Located on the inner arm, near the wrist, PC6 is effective in alleviating emotional distress to regulate the heart and physical symptoms linked to grief, such as nausea or upset stomach. It’s known for its calming effect on the spirit, making it a go-to point for emotional regulation.

Acupressure: A Gateway to Enhanced Brain Health and Well-being

Acupressure is key to unlocking enhanced brain health and overall well-being. Discover how this simple yet powerful technique can be a transformative tool for self-love.

Join us on this journey to discover the healing power of acupressure and its role in fostering self-confidence and harmony.

The Power of Acupressure

Acupressure is a remarkable yet straightforward practice that holds the key to unlocking a world of better health and emotional well-being. This method relieves physical discomfort and is a journey towards a more balanced and harmonious state of mind and body.

Imagine having the ability to alleviate stress and bring clarity to your mind just by applying gentle pressure to specific points on your body. Acupressure taps into the body’s natural healing pathways, helping to clear blockages that can lead to emotional and physical imbalances.

This technique is wonderfully accessible. With acupressure, you can guide yourself to better health. The practice is a nurturing way to reconnect with your body and mind.

Acupressure for Neurodiverse Individuals

Acupressure holds a special promise for neurodiverse individuals. Everyone’s brain works a little differently, and that’s what makes us unique. For those who experience the world in ways that might be different from the majority, acupressure offers a comforting, non-verbal form of support.

This practice can be a quiet yet powerful ally in managing the sensory experiences and emotional ups and downs that often accompany neurodiversity. By using simple acupressure techniques, individuals can find a sense of calm and focus.

For neurodiverse individuals, self-confidence can sometimes feel like a distant shore. Acupressure can be a bridge to that shore, helping to build a sense of self-assuredness and emotional strength.

Using Acupressure in Daily Life

Integrating acupressure into your daily routine is a gentle yet powerful way to nurture self-love and build self-confidence. Consider some specific acupressure points that are particularly effective for these goals.

The Heart 7 point, also known as the Gateway to Inner Peace, is located on the wrist, in line with the little finger. Gently pressing on this area can help you connect with feelings of peace and self-acceptance.

Another significant point is the Pericardium 6, known as the Emotional Healer. This point is found on the inner forearm, three finger breadths below the wrist, nestled between the two tendons.

The Third Eye Point, positioned between the eyebrows, is often utilized for mental clarity and calming the mind. This spot is particularly beneficial for enhancing self-awareness and boosting confidence, promoting a balanced emotional state.

The Sage Integrative Brain Wellness Approach

This ancient technique, simple yet profound, offers a pathway to balance and harmony. These practices invite you to rediscover equilibrium and foster a sense of harmony that goes beyond the physical.

1. Mind-Body Practices

Mind-body practices like yoga, meditation, and relaxation techniques form the cornerstone of holistic health. These activities do more than just ease the mind. They have a profound impact on physical health as well.

For instance, yoga not only increases flexibility but also enhances cardiovascular health.

This blend of mental and physical exercise ensures comprehensive well-being, essential for sustaining a balanced life in 2024. Embracing these practices is a crucial step in maintaining brain health, a vital component of overall wellness.

2. Acupressure and Energy Healing

Energy healing plays a significant role in holistic wellness. This ancient approach is rooted in the belief that manipulating the body’s energy can lead to better health and equilibrium.

Acupressure, for instance, involves applying pressure to specific points on the body to relieve pain and reduce stress. Reiki, another popular form of energy healing, is known for its ability to promote relaxation and aid the body’s natural healing processes.

3. Embracing Natural Products

Natural products, ranging from herbs to dietary supplements, are integral to holistic health. These products offer a gentler yet effective approach to wellness. For example, using chamomile tea for relaxation or turmeric for inflammation has been practiced for centuries.

Integrating such natural products into daily routines can significantly enhance health without the harsh side effects often associated with synthetic medications.

4. Creative Outlet Therapies

Creative outlet therapies offer a unique approach to managing stress and enhancing emotional well-being.

Journaling, for instance, provides a way to articulate thoughts and feelings and serves as a therapeutic tool for mental clarity. Music therapy has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve mood. Art, be it painting or sculpting, allows for emotional expression in a non-verbal manner, which can be particularly beneficial for those who find it challenging to articulate their feelings.

5. Nourishment and Empowerment

Nourishing both the body and mind is fundamental to achieving holistic health. This involves not only what we consume physically but also what we feed our minds.

Eating a balanced diet, rich in nutrients, supports physical health, while engaging in activities that stimulate the mind, like reading or learning new skills, promotes mental well-being. Empowering oneself through informed choices about health and lifestyle is crucial.

Embrace Your Holistic Path

Holistic well-being is a continuous, personal journey. It recognizes the interconnectedness of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health and aims to promote overall well-being.

Relevance in modern healthcare

In the face of the growing need for patient-centered care, holistic nursing and holistic nurse coaching has gained significant relevance in modern healthcare. It addresses the limitations of conventional medicine by integrating complementary and alternative therapies, promoting self-care, and considering the patient’s unique needs and preferences.

Bridging Holistic with Conventional

Collaboration in interdisciplinary teams

Holistic nursing encourages collaboration in interdisciplinary healthcare teams. By incorporating active and reflective listening, holistic nurses create a safe and supportive healing environment for patients to share their concerns and goals.

Holistic assessment techniques

Holistic nurses are skilled in using holistic assessment techniques, which include comprehensive physical assessments, as well as exploring various areas of wellness such as the patient’s emotional, mental, spiritual well-being, and more. This bidirectional communication network between the central nervous system and the enteric nervous system (ENS) in the gastrointestinal tract is what scientists call the gut-brain axis.

Ever heard of the phrase “trust your gut”? Well, there’s scientific wisdom behind it.

The ENS, often dubbed the “second brain,” comprises millions of neurons lining your gastrointestinal tract. This intricate neural network not only regulates digestion but also plays a pivotal role in influencing your emotions, moods, and even certain behaviors. Furthermore, the ECS plays a vital role in maintaining homeostasis.

The ECS is a remarkable biological network consisting of endocannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), endocannabinoids, and enzymes. Our gut contains CB1 and CB2 receptors, which orchestrate a delicate balance, influencing mood, appetite, pain, and inflammation. By understanding the role of the ECS in the gut-brain axis, we begin to grasp the intricate connection between what we eat, how our body processes it, and our mental well-being. Introducing cannabinoids like cannabidiol (CBD) and Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can enhance our body’s ability to regulate the gut-brain axis.

Cannabis in the Kitchen and Brain Health

Cooking with cannabis isn’t merely a trend; it’s a culinary revolution with substantial benefits. By infusing your dishes with cannabis, you harness its therapeutic potential. Both THC and CBD positively impact the gut-brain axis.

The most common cannabis strains or chemovars contain a high-percentage of THC. However, large doses of THC do not equate to effectiveness. In fact, low-dose THC (2.5mg to 5mg) reduces neuroinflammation, enhances endocannabinoid levels, and promotes the growth of gut bacterial species that produce neuroprotective metabolites. Additionally, THC slows down the digestive process and has been traditionally used to treat diarrhea, reduce pain, and elevate mood.

Adding CBD stimulates the digestive process and has been traditionally used to treat anxiety, pain, inflammation, and constipation. Also, CBD directly protects the cells that line the gut. Moreover, CBD increased hippocampal cell survival and neurogenesis. Lastly, CBD-dominant strains offer a good option for daytime use without sedation.

Most importantly, understanding edible dosing is crucial to an enjoyable, beneficial edible experience. To simplify this process, we recommend using the Veriheal edible dosing calculator, ensuring your cannabis-infused creations offer relaxation without overwhelming effects.

Interconnectedness – MIND Diet, Cannabis, Brain Health, and ECS

Now, let’s connect the dots. When cannabinoids from cannabis bind to CB1 and CB2 receptors, they trigger pain relief, anti-vomiting, and anti-inflammatory effects. Remarkably, the MIND diet, with its fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, nurtures a healthy gut microbiota. This intricate balance directly impacts the ECS, creating a harmonious relationship between your brain, diet, and overall well-being.

A MIND Diet Recipe – Basil Pesto

Basil Pesto is a nutrient-dense, MIND diet-compliant recipe packed full of ingredients that nourish your gut, ECS, and brain. Add your favorite cannabinoid (THC or CBD) to enhance the benefits.

Ingredients:

2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed

1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/3 cup walnuts, toasted

3 garlic cloves, peeled

1/2 lemon, juiced

1/2 teaspoon salt, or more to taste

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or more to taste

Calculated dose of cannabis oil

Instructions:

Toast the Nuts: toast them in a dry skillet over medium heat until they are lightly browned and fragrant. In fact, the seismic shifts in reality continue today, with COVID-19 still causing loss of life and disability, natural disasters like the wildfires in Lahaina that devastated the people of Maui, wars being waged or an imminent threat, and global economic uncertainty. Overall, the global population continues to suffer massive and unaccepted loss upon loss, leading to another global pandemic of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates approximately 3.6 percent of 250 million people of the global population experienced PTSD and the associated symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Still, nothing creates change better than a crisis. Throughout the pandemic and into today, mental health awareness has come out of the shadows, becoming a spotlight issue that millions of people openly discuss and advocate fiercely for equal access to treatment. Holistic health and wellness nurses recognized this opportunity to educate patients on holistic PTSD treatment. Acupressure, an ancient treatment founded in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is a safe, holistic treatment option for those seeking relief from PTSD, depression, and anxiety symptoms.

What is PTSD, and why are anxiety and depression commonly diagnosed together?

The American Psychiatric Association defines post-traumatic stress disorder as a psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed an emotionally or physically harmful or life-threatening traumatic event, series of events, or set of circumstances. When these events occur repetitively over a lifetime or for a prolonged time period, the term complex PTSD or C-PTSD is used. Common symptoms of PTSD fall into these four categories:

Intrusion: Intrusive thoughts, memories, flashbacks, or dreams of the traumatic event, which can be so vivid the person feels they are experiencing the event in real-time.

Avoidance: Avoiding reminders of the traumatic event may include avoiding people, places, activities, objects, and situations that may trigger distressing memories.

Alterations in cognition and mood: Inability to remember important aspects of the traumatic event, negative thoughts and feelings leading to ongoing and distorted beliefs about oneself or others; distorted thoughts about the cause or consequences of the event leading to wrongly blaming self or others; ongoing fear, horror, anger, guilt or shame; much less interest in activities previously enjoyed; feeling detached or estranged from others; or being unable to experience positive emotions (a void of happiness or satisfaction). These symptoms are closely related to symptoms of depression.

Alterations in arousal and reactivity: Arousal and reactive symptoms may include being irritable and having angry outbursts; behaving recklessly or in a self-destructive way; being overly watchful of one’s surroundings in a suspecting way; being easily startled; or having problems concentrating or sleeping. These symptoms are closely related to symptoms of anxiety disorder.

Even with these brief descriptions of symptoms, one can understand how anyone experiencing PTSD, complex trauma, anxiety, or depression is dealing with life-altering situations that need mental health support. Furthermore, the traditional Western medicine model for treating these symptoms is often ineffective as it is not designed to treat the root cause, which is in the mind.

Eckhardt Tolle said, “One of the main tasks of the mind is to fight or remove the emotional pain, which is one of the reasons for its incessant activity, but all it can ever achieve is to cover it up temporarily. In fact, the harder the mind struggles to get rid of the pain, the greater the pain.” Acupressure is an integrative treatment to address the physical and emotional pain symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

The Science of Acupressure: Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is rooted in ancient philosophies and concepts that have been practiced for thousands of years. In an effort to explain how acupressure works on the body, it is important to understand three fundamental concepts within TCM: Yin and Yang, Qi, and meridians.

Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang represent the dual nature of everything in the universe. Yin is associated with darkness, stillness, and cold, while Yang represents light, activity, and heat. Health is achieved when there is a balance between Yin and Yang within the body. An imbalance can lead to illness, and TCM treatments, including acupressure, aim to restore this balance.

Qi (Vital Life Force)

Qi (pronounced “Chi”) is the vital life force or energy that flows through the body along pathways called meridians. It is essential for maintaining physical, mental, and emotional well-being. When Qi is blocked or imbalanced, it can result in various health problems. TCM treatments focus on balancing and harmonizing the flow of Qi to promote health and healing.

Meridians

Meridians are energy pathways that run throughout the body, connecting various organs and tissues. There are 12 main meridians, each associated with specific organs. Along these meridians are acupoints, which are specific points where Qi can be accessed and manipulated. Stimulating these points through techniques like acupressure helps restore the flow of Qi and balance Yin and Yang.

Acupressure and TCM

Acupressure is a technique that involves applying pressure to specific acupoints on the body. By pressing these points, the flow of Qi within the meridians can be regulated, promoting balance between Yin and Yang. Additionally, it is worth noting that the difference between acupuncture and acupressure is that acupuncture uses hair-thin needles to stimulate a specific acupoint. In contrast, acupressure uses NO needles and is performed using hand and gentle touch. More importantly, both acupressure and acupuncture stimulate acupoints to promote healing.

Acupressure and Western Medicine

In Western medicine, there is a debate on exactly how acupressure works on the body. According to John Hopkins Medicine, acupoints stimulate the central nervous system to release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. While another study found that acupressure meridians utilize the extracellular matrix and fascia (thin-connective tissue covering organs, blood vessels, bones, nerve, and muscle fibers) to exert their effects. However, one idea Western medicine can agree on is the effects of acupressure therapy.

Acupressure for PTSD, Anxiety, and Depression: Evidence

First, let us explore the scientific evidence for using acupressure for PTSD, anxiety, and depression. In June 2020, the scientific journal Medicine published a research article, Efficacy and safety of acupuncture in treating post-traumatic stress disorder, which concluded that acupuncture can affect the autonomic nervous system (the nervous system that controls our breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure) and the prefrontal (judgment and decision-making) as well as limbic (fear-inducing) brain structures, thus reducing the symptoms of PTSD. Additionally, fatigue and insomnia, often accompanied by depressive symptoms, were significantly reduced by stimulation of several acupoints for 12 minutes three times a week for four weeks. In further evidence, Acupuncture for depression found acupuncture may result in a moderate reduction in the severity of depression compared to treatment as usual or no treatment at all. Moreover, research shows that pressure applied at ST-36 evokes a deactivation in the amygdala and hippocampus, reducing the body’s expression of fear and irritability and easing the mind’s grip on traumatic memories.

Next, the following pictures are examples of three acupoints used frequently in caring for PTSD, anxiety, and depression. If you choose to stimulate these acupoints, please find an intentional time to hold points, connect with a point using a gentle touch, consider holding for a few breaths, and release to the next point as needed. As of 2023, cannabis is legal in over 23 US states, even in Guam, the District of Columbia, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

If you’re part of the cannabis community, you may have had funny or out-of-world experiences. But have you ever wondered what would happen if you used cannabis with intention? In better terms, what if you started meditating while high?

Meditation has plenty of benefits for the brain, and so does cannabis. This article covers some benefits of meditation and cannabis for your brain health. Read on to discover more.

Regulate Stress

Meditation and the use of cannabis are both activities known to reduce stress. Meditation is a way to train your mind, and if you stick to it, it can have more long-term effects on mind health. Mindful meditation can increase the cortical thickness of the hippocampus.

This part of the brain is in charge of regulating emotions, which can help people manage their mental health. It also decreases the volume of the amygdala. This part of the brain regulates emotions like fear and anxiety.

Meditation can be difficult to get into, especially if you don’t know what you’re supposed to do or feel. This is where cannabis can come in.

The chemicals in cannabis bind to our endocannabinoid systems, which produce those feelings of stress relief. This can make it easier to meditate, especially if you’re feeling jittery or overwhelmed.

Improve Focus

We live in a fast-paced world, and it’s become common to have more than one thing on your mind at a time. As a result, it can be difficult to tackle tasks or concentrate on the things that matter. Cannabis contains THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which can help stimulate dopamine levels.

It’s crucial to remember that this only works if you take it in small doses. You only need enough to stimulate your brain to feel more productive and energetic. If you take too much, you’ll end up high.

Combining meditation with the right dosage can help you improve cognitive performance. You’ll be less distracted, and your mind will not be as prone to wandering.

Meditation is all about practicing self-awareness. Through practice, you can detach yourself from harmful, self-deprecating thoughts.

Protect Your Brain As You Age

The brain is more susceptible to damage as we age. This can manifest as forgetfulness, anxiety, or, in worse cases, brain atrophy.

Mindful meditation can protect the brain from the harmful side effects of aging. Regular practice enables the brain to preserve gray matter, which carries neurons.

Our higher functions, like decision-making and concentration, become stronger. Studies suggest that cannabis may heal cognitive decline in older adults. Cannabis can improve communication between the hippocampus and cerebellum, regions of the brain that are crucial for memory and learning.

The Benefits of Meditating While High

These are some ways that meditating with cannabis can change the brain. Meditation by itself has a strong potential to improve brain health and function. Cannabis can enhance your efforts, but it’s not something you should try alone, especially if you consider yourself novice or a beginner.

Sage Integrative Wellness and our board certified holistic cannabis nurse believes in the power of medical cannabis in preserving cognitive health. We can help you integrate cannabis medicine into your routine to help you achieve the most optimal results. Contact us today and ask us about our brain supplements.

The post Cannabis and Meditation: How Brain Structures Change Physically and Emotionally appeared first on Sage Integrative Wellness.

Nurses and Business: Why Branding Matters in Nurse Entrepreneurship

Did you know nursing was rated the most-trusted profession last year?

That’s the 21st straight year the nursing profession has taken the top spot.

If you’re a nurse entrepreneur, how can you capitalize on the public’s goodwill toward the men and women who faithfully perform their healthcare duties?

One way is to leverage the power of branding. Branding refers to what you do to distinguish your products or services from rivals’ offerings. Continue reading to learn why branding is vital to the success of a nurse’s business operations.

Tells Your Story

Branding is about telling your story. You can explain to your target demographic the following three things:

Who you are as a business owner

What you’re about

Why you’re worth patronizing

When considering nurse entrepreneurship and what makes you unique, come up with keywords that capture the essence of your brand. That’ll be essential when the time comes to focus on your target demographic online.

Leveraging the power of search engine optimization, you can become more accessible to consumers who want to find you on the internet. Remember that your story needs to resonate with your market.

So, get creative and dig deep to give consumers the information they need to know about you as a person and as an entrepreneur. They’ll favorably view your brand once they buy in and see how your offering can help them.

Creates Emotional Bond

Another reason branding is vital is that it can help you create an emotional connection. So, it’s about more than just telling your story. You must connect with your target demographic so they care and are emotionally invested.

Start by building a good reputation as a holistic nurse entrepreneur.

It also comes down to communicating effectively with your audience. You can address their pain points and explain how what you offer as a business owner can help them alleviate their problems or concerns.

Generates Growth

Revenue growth will follow when you build a strong brand for your nurse business. According to one source, presenting your brand regularly on various platforms can boost revenue by as much as 23%.

The aforementioned source adds that it takes five to seven impressions for consumers to remember a brand. So, focus on creating an effective marketing plan that gets your brand in front of your target demographic.

As your brand resonates with consumers and you begin to differentiate your company from competitors, consumers will be more inclined to patronize your nurse business.

Every Nurse’s Business Needs Effective Branding

A nurse’s business can succeed further with proper branding. It’s essential to go about things the right way.

Entrepreneurship without a proper game plan will only get you so far. So, it’s important to know what it takes to be a successful nurse entrepreneur.

If you want health and wellness nurse coaching, holistic nurse entrepreneur business coaching, nurse mentorships, or other services to help you achieve your goals, get in touch to find out how Sage Integrative Wellness can assist.

The post Nurses and Business: Why Branding Matters in Nurse Entrepreneurship appeared first on Sage Integrative Wellness.

How to Use Cannabis For Holistic Pain Management

Pain is a multifaceted, individualistic phenomenon that occurs both in our brains and our bodies.

As humans, each of us anticipates, perceives, and physically experiences pain differently. Furthermore, uncontrolled pain is one of the most common reasons patients try medical cannabis. In fact, among adults with chronic pain in states with medical cannabis laws, 3 out of 10 people reported using cannabis to manage their pain.

Understanding the types of pain, the role of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in pain modulation, and how to use medical cannabis can help you achieve holistic pain relief.

Types of Pain

Throughout our bodies are specialized sensory receptors called nociceptors which alert our brain to painful or potentially harmful stimuli. When stimulated they produce different types of pain. The following are some examples of pain type:

Acute pain is short-term pain that usually lasts for less than three months. It is caused by an injury, surgery, or illness and is often described as sharp, intense, and sudden. Most importantly, medical cannabis is not recommended for treating acute pain.

Chronic pain persists for more than three months. Various conditions, such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, or nerve damage, cause it.

Breakthrough pain is a flare of pain that happens even though you regularly take pain medicine for acute or chronic pain.

Neuropathic pain is caused by damage or injury to the nerves. It can result in burning, stabbing, or shooting pain. Neuropathic pain can be caused by conditions such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or nerve damage due to chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Migraines are headaches characterized by recurrent attacks of moderate to severe throbbing and pulsating pain on one side of the head. The pain is caused by the activation of nerve fibers within the wall of brain blood vessels traveling inside the meninges (three layers of membranes protecting the brain and spinal cord).

Inflammatory pain is caused by inflammation in the body. It can result from conditions such as arthritis and autoimmune diseases like Crohn’s disease or lupus.

Bone pain is aching tenderness, or another discomfort in the bone. One of the most common symptoms of bone cancer is bone pain.

The role of the ECS in pain

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex network of cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoid molecules, and enzymes that play a crucial role in pain processing and regulation. In fact, the ECS exhibits anti-nociception abilities that reduce pain sensations with regulatory actions at all stages of pain processing pathways.

There are two main types of cannabinoid receptors known as CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors heavily populate the pain-processing area of the brain and central nervous system which control our perception of pain. While CB2 receptors heavily populate our immune system and the peripheral nervous system and work to reduce inflammatory pain. Additionally, these CB receptors act in concert with other pain-modulating receptors, such as our body’s opioid receptors (more on this later in the article) to alter the pain experience. Finally, Transient Receptor Potential Cation Channel Subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1) plays a part in mediating inflammation, pain perception, and body temperature. Inhibiting this receptor may help reduce pain, as CBD “blocks” or “occupies” the area/s pain signals are being sent.

Below is an image showing how our pain receptors interaction with the cannabinoid receptors to alter our pain perception:

Cannabis for holistic pain management

Both major cannabinoids, THC and CBD, influence the signals received by nociceptors altering how we perceive and experience pain. Additionally, both act exhibit anti-inflammatory properties by preventing the production of chemicals that cause chronic inflammation. Finally, cannabinoids act on nerve and non-nerve tissues to help reduce the sensations caused by neuropathic pain.

Cannabis and reducing opioid use

Opioid crisis and the lack of effective treatment pushed cannabis to the forefront as a possible exit-drug for those struggling with addiction. In 2016, a study released by the University of Michigan revealed a statistic of reduction of opiate use by 64% amongst chronic pain patients who used medical marijuana. Then in 2021, a collaborative study from University of California, Davis and Yale University found an increase from one to two storefront dispensaries in a county is associated with an estimated 17% reduction in all opioid related mortality rates. Given these statistics, it is easy to see that cannabis is a supportive therapy to reducing and even eliminating the chronic use of opioids.

How to use cannabis for holistic pain management

The five most common ways to use cannabis for holistic pain management are:

Inhalation or smoking cannabis is the fastest way to experience pain relief. However, it is also the fastest way cannabis is eliminated in the body so those who smoke find that after 2 hours their pain may increase again. Cannabis communities like Leafly offer reviews of different chemovar (strains) from thousands of people also seeking pain relief.

Ingestion or taking cannabis by mouth is a discrete method that can provide 4 to 6 hours of pain relief. However, onset can take up to 90 minutes before the body may experience relief. Additionally, ingestion of THC requires smaller doses because THC is converted to a more potent metabolite once it reaches the liver. It is this active, potent metabolite that affords the hours of relief. Common products are CBD oil, THC oil, gummies, chocolate, and even drinks.

Transdermal Patches are applied to skin and are a novel way to achieve a consistent dose over several hours and even days. Transdermal effects can be felt as soon as 30 minutes to an hour, and last as long as 3 days. Transdermal patches come in a variety of doses of THC, CBD, or a combination of both, so it is easy to find the right one to fit your pain relief needs. Additional transdermal products include gels and lotions, however the effects of these products usually only last 2 to 4 hours.

Suppositories work by allowing cannabinoids to pass through the mucosal layer in the rectum or vagina. Additionally, they are a great cannabis delivery option for people who can no longer swallow. Suppositories begin to work within 30 minutes to 1 hour and the effects can last between 5 to 8 hours.

Topical application is applied to skin and is great for joint pain, minor burns, and rashes. Topically applied cannabis begins to take effect between 15 to 30 minutes and lasts between 2 and 4 hours.

One important aspect of understanding the onset (when it begins to work) and the duration (how long it lasts) of ways to use cannabis as medicine is the ability to layer doses. For example, your pain level is at an 8 on a scale from 0 to 10 with ten being the worst. You can smoke a couple puffs on a pipe and ingest a 5 mg gummy. By the time the effects of the smoked cannabis starts to wear off, the ingested effects will begin thus, giving you immediate yet, longer lasting relief.

How to start dosing cannabis

Understanding how to choose the right cannabis dose is vital to optimal pain relief. As a holistic cannabis nurse, the recommendation is to “start low and go slow.” If you are new to cannabis, start with the lowest dose, such as 1-2 mg, and slowly increase the dose amount until you achieve the effect you desire.

Cannabis works in a “biphasic” manner. This scientific word simply means that too small of dose may cause unwanted side effects or ineffective pain relief. Likewise, too large of a dose may cause unwanted side effects or an INCREASE in pain. Tracking the dose(s) used in a journal is extremely helpful for finding your optimal dose.

Expert guidance with a certified holistic cannabis nurse

At Sage Integrative Wellness, our certified holistic cannabis nurse has guided many clients to find their optimal dose and manage their pain effectively. Yet, we often skip or need to provide ourselves with the same level of caregiving. This week the ANA encourages nurses to prioritize self-care to cultivate and maintain optimal mental health and physical well-being. Undivided attention is one of the best gifts we, as nurses, can give ourselves.

According to the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA), to facilitate healing within others, nurses must undertake healing within themselves. Furthermore, self-care is a core value of holistic nursing. Holistic nurses value themselves and mobilize the necessary resources to care for themselves. They endeavor to integrate self-awareness, self-care, self-healing, and self-responsibility into their lives by incorporating various practices, including Mind-body practices, biologically-based therapies, manipulative and body-based methods, energy therapies, good nutrition and exercise, lifelong learning, and self-assessment. To learn more about these practices, click here for AHNA’s FREE self-care and resilience toolkit.

In addition to the self-care toolkit, the AHNA has partnered with ANA to be a part of the Healthy Nurse, Health Nation (HNHN) program, which connects and engages nurses, employers, and organizations around improving health in six areas: mental health, physical activity, nutrition, rest, quality of life, and safety. The HNHN program also offers nurses monthly challenges focusing on these six areas. Watch this short video to learn more about this partnership and the program.

Recognition – Week 2, May 8 – May 14

This week the ANA encourages nurses to honor the work of nurses who lead, excel, and innovate in our healthcare systems and communities.

At SIW, we recognize our Sage Nurses who are high-visionary leaders and innovators on our Instagram profile.

The ANA resource toolkit provides tips for working with the media and tools to help nurses raise the visibility of nursing by requesting a proclamation (click here to download a sample proclamation letter) from local and state governments to declare May 6 as National Nurse Recognition Day or May as Nurses Month.

Another option to spotlight National Nurses Month is through social media. Every nurse is an educator who can use social media to promote nursing values or express gratitude, appreciation, and recognition of nurses who make a difference daily. Lastly, social media can be used to share the story of your nursing journey.

The ANA has designated the following hashtags for 2023 #ANANursesMonth and #YouMakeADifference. As always, please follow your facility’s guidelines for posting content.

Professional Development – Week 3, May 15 – May 21

Nurses are lifelong learners. During this week, the ANA encourages nurses to focus on how to excel in their nursing career and help other nurses in their professional journey. One option is the ANA’s Navigating Nursing webinar series expands communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Another avenue for professional development is through certification. The ANCC Certification Program enables nurses to demonstrate their specialty expertise and validate their knowledge to employers and patients in traditional nursing specialties. In addition, the AHNCC Certification Program enables holistic nurses and nurse coaches to distinguish themselves as experts in nursing practice, education, and research.

Are you interested in learning about career advancement through certification as a holistic nurse or integrative nurse coach? Click here to download SIW’s free e-book, which includes a free holistic continuing nursing education opportunity.

Ready to start your holistic nursing career? Sage Mentorships allow individuals to receive further one-on-one professional nurse coaching for their healing path and mentoring for their holistic nursing career as an AHNCC board-certified holistic nurse or nurse coach.

Community Engagement – Week 4, May 22 – May 31

Time to take it to the streets! In the final week of Nurses Month, the ANA prompts nurses to help promote nurses’ invaluable contributions by engaging with their community and educating them on what nurses do.

Locally, nurses can partner with other nursing and healthcare organizations in their area to sponsor a joint Nurses Month event. Consider a (virtual) fundraiser for the community, a blood drive, or online workshops to reduce stress and build morale.

Nurses are leaders, and we can use our voices to educate, influence, and strengthen our communities by becoming policymakers. Three opportunities to serve your community at a higher level:

Nurses On Boards Coalition is a national partnership of organizations committed to improving the health of communities through the service of nurses on boards.

ANA’s Policy and State Government Affairs program monitors trends in nursing-related legislation in the states and discusses current and ongoing healthcare issues with elected officials at the local, state, or federal level.

RN Action’s advocacy toolkit can be used to learn how to voice your concerns about the nursing profession to Congress and stay up to date on the latest news and legislation from the Hill.

Takeaways

The American Nurses Association designates May 2023 as National Nurses Month with a weekly focus on self-care, recognition, professional development, and community engagement. During Week 1, the ANA encourages nurses to prioritize their mental health and physical well-being through self-care practices. Week 2 is dedicated to recognizing nurses’ contributions to healthcare systems and communities. The brain’s primary functions include controlling involuntary and voluntary activities and producing and conducting neurotransmitters. More importantly, a brain-healthy diet is required for our brains to perform these functions at optimal levels.

Brain Functions

At the bare minimum, our brain manages involuntary activities like breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, sexual arousal, and digestion happen without any instruction or direction. Moreover, voluntary activities require us to choose actions like sustained attention, problem-solving, reading, creativity, and movement. At the same time, the brain is working on the production and conduction of neurotransmitters (NTs).

NTs are specialized chemicals the brain uses to excite or inhibit actions within the body. For instance, acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in memory, learning, attention, arousal, and involuntary muscle movement. Then there is Dopamine, a neurotransmitter and a hormone that plays a role in movement, memory, and pleasurable reward and motivation. Next, Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that plays a role in mood, sleep, digestion, nausea, wound healing, bone health, blood clotting, and sexual desire. Lastly, GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a neurotransmitter that slows down your brain by blocking specific signals in your central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). The production of NTs requires holistic nutrition from clean edible plants and responsibly sourced fatty fish.

In concert with NTs, our brains communicate with other systems in our bodies, like the endocannabinoid system and the gut, to optimize the utilization of nutrients we eat.

The Brain-Endocannabinoid System-Gut Connection

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex network of cannabinoid receptors, enzymes, and endocannabinoid molecules that play a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis and promoting overall health and wellness in the body. More specifically, the ECS plays a vital role in regulating the brain-gut connection, which is responsible for communication between the brain and our gut.

Inside our bodies, cannabinoid receptors are present in both the brain and the gut. Additionally, our bodies produce compounds called endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids act like NTs and are structurally similar to phytocannabinoids like THC and CBD in the cannabis plant. Furthermore, research has shown many foods for brain health also contain compounds (cannabimimetic) that stimulate cannabinoid receptors in the gut. Together the ECS receptors, cannabinoids, and the foods for brain health influence gut motility, intestinal secretions, inflammation, mood, motivation, and other processes that affect digestive health.

So how does healthy brain food get from our stomach to our brain?

Anatomically, our digestive system begins in our mouth, travels down our esophagus, into the stomach, then onto our small intestines, followed by our large intestines from there waste is excreted when we use the restroom. Physiologically, when we eat, the chewing and our saliva begin the initial process of breaking down our food into small molecules. Once in the stomach, gastric secretions continue the digestive process of breaking these small molecules into even smaller molecules that our small intestines can absorb as nutrients that can power the brain.

The small intestines contain a mucosal layer containing thousands of life-sustaining bacteria, fungi, and other microbes, known as the gut microbiome. Want to know more about the gut microbiome? Click here for a video to learn why a healthy gut microbiome is important. A healthy gut microbiome functions to improve digestion, aids in nutrient absorption and metabolism, promotes efficient detoxification, regulates hormone production, balances immunity by preventing foreign invaders, and acts as a structural defense against the following harmful substances:

Food allergies and sensitivities

Heavy metals and environmental toxins

Toxins from sanitation chemicals used to treat drinking water

Alcohol

Certain medications, such as antibiotics

Artificial sweeteners and high-sugar intake

Infections

Chemotherapy and radiation

High-intensity exercise

Stress

Given this information, we must reduce harmful substances and nourish our gut microbiome with high-quality brain-healthy foods that support the brain’s energy requirements.

Brain Caloric Requirements

Interestingly, in 2002 two scientists, Raichle & Gusnard, concluded that our brain represents about 2% of our body weight but accounts for about 20% of the calories consumed by the body. While glucose or simple sugar is the brain’s preferred energy source, it can also use ketone bodies which are produced in the liver when glucose is not readily available, like when a person follows a ketogenic diet. It is worth noting that a calorie is not just a calorie. High-quality calories support high-quality energy output. In fact, intentional calorie restriction is related to life longevity and balanced physiological processes.

8 Brain-Healthy Foods

At Sage Integrative Wellness (SIW), we promote a functional approach to holistic healing and nutrition therapy where food supports us on our holistic healing journey. Here are eight nutrient-dense functional foods that support brain health:

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a nutritious whole-grain food containing beta-glucans, a soluble fiber type. Studies have shown that consuming beta-glucans from oatmeal may benefit brain health by improving cognitive function, preventing the development of diabetes, lowering blood cholesterol levels, and reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Additionally, a cup of oatmeal contains tryptophan, an amino acid that converts into the NT serotonin – our feel-good brain hormone that supports our mood and sleep.

Berries

Berries of all kinds are not only delicious but are also packed with flavonols which help to reduce and repair cell damage. Notably, anthocyanins, a flavonoid found in red, blue, and purple edible plants, exhibit neuroprotective properties that protect against our normal aging process, may prevent dementia, and improve our memory. Another study found a diet high in anthocyanins supports good mental health through improved sleep, lower perceived stress, and decreased depressive symptoms.

Wild-Caught Salmon

Wild-Caught Salmon is a rich source of omega-3s which supports optimal cognition, such as memory and learning. Realistically, more than two-thirds of the brain’s fatty acids are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid found primarily in oily fish like wild-caught salmon. However, some vegetarian sources exist as well such as seaweed, walnuts, hemp and chia seeds, and kidney beans. Also, wild-caught salmon is low in mercury. Research has shown that a high level of mercury in the blood is a neurotoxin that leads to long-term brain damage. In 2014, the American Journal for Preventive Medicine published a study that revealed people who ate baked fish at least once per week for ten years had increased grey matter in the hippocampus, posterior cingulate, and orbital frontal cortex. They performed better on tests. They had a 5x decreased risk of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes, both the commonly known orange and lesser known purple, are anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, heart healthy, and improve our brain and memory capacity. Purple sweet potatoes are high in anthocyanins which help protect the brain by reducing inflammation. Orange sweet potatoes are high in beta-carotene, which converts into vitamin A, which is key in maintaining the gut’s mucosal lining and reduces inflammation. In addition to reducing inflammation, sweet potatoes are packed with Vitamin B6, which is used to produce serotonin which boosts mood stability, stress tolerance, and sleep regulation.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables like spinach, kale, mustard and collard greens, arugula, broccoli, and cauliflower contain a glucosinolate called sulforaphane, which protects the brain from being overloaded with cellular waste. On top of that, these detoxifying greens are low-calorie and rich in folate, vitamins C, E, and K, which are essential for optimal brain function and slowing cognitive decline. If more evidence is needed to put these brain-healthy beauties on your plate, Dr. Amen, one of America’s leading brain health experts, teaches patients and practitioners that cruciferous vegetables regulate pain and pleasure and support the emotional centers of the brain.

Nuts

Nuts, like almonds and walnuts, are healthy unsaturated fats that balance cholesterol levels and improve blood vessel health. These fats balance metabolic function, regulate prostaglandin production, and lower cholesterol levels. Optimal prostaglandin levels regulate the dilation of our blood vessels during inflammation. In 2020, the New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities published a study that reported the beneficial effects of a diet with walnuts on memory, learning, motor coordination, anxiety, and locomotor activity.

Seeds

Seeds, like Hemp and Chia, are brain-nutrient powerhouses packed full of vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats and help to balance dopamine, a neurotransmitter, levels in the brain. Hemp seeds contain vitamin B6, tyrosine, magnesium, and omega-3s which are the building blocks for many NTs. Chia seeds are one of the plant sources of omega-3 and have been shown to increase intelligence and protect brain tissue. Lastly, regular consumption of these seeds helps balance dopamine levels in the brain, which may be helpful for those with depression, ADHD, Parkinson’s disease, and Restless Leg Syndrome.

Herbs and Spices

Herbs and Spices, like turmeric, rosemary, basil, lavender, black pepper, and cannabis, offer a variety of brain-healthy benefits and contain terpenes that enhance endocannabinoid communication within the body. Terpenes are chemicals that give herbs and spices their unique smell and taste. The brain is responsible for managing both involuntary and voluntary activities and producing and conducting neurotransmitters, which are specialized chemicals that the brain uses to excite or inhibit actions within the body. The brain requires a healthy diet of clean edible plants and responsibly sourced fatty fish to perform these functions optimally. The endocannabinoid system is vital in regulating the brain-gut connection, which is responsible for communication between the brain and our gut. The gut microbiome is essential for digestive health and balances immunity by preventing foreign invaders, among other benefits. Finally, eight nutrient-dense functional foods that support brain health and enhance communication between the brain-ECS-gut connection include oatmeal, berries, wild-caught salmon, sweet potatoes, cruciferous vegetables, nuts, seeds, and herbs and spices.

Nurse Author Dominique Fontaine, BSN, RN, HNB-BC, HWNC-BC is a double board certified holistic nurse, Amen Clinics certified professional brain health coach, holistic medical content writer, and medical content reviewer for Sage Integrative Wellness, LLC and various national and international wellness companies and media companies. Furthermore, holistic nurses strive to build strong relationships with their patients, taking a compassionate and empathetic approach to care. Moreover, holistic nursing is an attitude, a philosophy, and a way of being that requires nurses to integrate self-care, self-responsibility, spirituality, and reflection in their lives

Holistic nurses view medical cannabis as a natural adjunctive tool to traditional medical therapies.

Cannabis nurses can be licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, or doctors of nursing practice. Once licensed, they acquired additional education regarding the endocannabinoid system, the benefits of cannabis, product types, dosing guidelines of cannabis, and how to prevent adverse effects. Additionally, cannabis nurses educate patients and other healthcare professionals on the use of medical cannabis, monitor their progress, and provide cannabis nursing care through endocannabinoid therapeutics for symptom management while identifying the safety considerations for patient use of cannabis.

Ultimately, the goal of holistic cannabis nursing is to support the patient’s healing and enhance well-being with the use of medical cannabis and endocannabinoid therapeutics.

Still, there are specific regulations that govern cannabis nurses. First, holistic cannabis nurses must know and adhere to their specific state laws as well as federal laws in regard to medical cannabis legalities and what their state nurse practice act act says about holistic nursing. In addition to cannabis laws, nurses must adhere to nursing-specific regulations. In July 2018, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) released The NCSBN National Nursing Guidelines for Medical Marijuana. These six guidelines apply to all nurses regardless of specialty or clinical environment:

The nurse shall have a working knowledge of the current state of legalization of medical and recreational cannabis use.

The nurse shall have a working knowledge of the patient’s state’s Medical Marijuana Program.

The nurse shall have an understanding of the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoid receptors, cannabinoids, and the interactions between them.

The nurse shall have an understanding of cannabis pharmacology and the research associated with the medical use of cannabis.

The nurse shall be able to identify the safety considerations for patient use of cannabis.

The nurse shall approach the patient without judgment regarding the patient’s choice of treatment or preferences in managing pain and other distressing symptoms.

Finally, holistic cannabis nurses should understand the Holistic Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice set forth by the American Holistic Nurses Association and the Cannabis Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice set forth by the American Cannabis Nurses Association.

The holistic cannabis nurse’s practice environment is highly autonomous, patient-centered, and nurtures each patient in their unique vision of health and wellness.

Many holistic cannabis nurses are entrepreneurs and practice without the supervision of a medical doctor. Using the nursing process, patient encounters are still guided by assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation. However, interventions do not solely focus on the use of cannabis. In fact, educating patients on the art of self-care is key. Patients who engage in self-assessment through purposeful self-reflection discover their unique vision of health and wellness. Understanding the patient’s vision emboldens the nurse as a premier patient advocate. Most importantly, the holistic cannabis nurse-patient relationship honors each patient’s values, health beliefs, and health experiences through the healing process.

Specialization opportunities for Holistic cannabis nurses exist in specific patient populations, education, advocacy, and policy development.

Aspiring holistic cannabis nurses have many roles to explore. First, direct patient care allows for specialization in specific patient populations, such as women’s health, palliative and hospice care, pediatrics, as well as mental health. Second, holistic cannabis nurse educators provide cannabis-specific education to both patients and providers in the clinical and academic setting. The third role of an advocate is to facilitate awareness of cannabis as medicine. By telling your cannabis story or supporting patients to tell their cannabis story to further safe access, use, and reduce the stigma surrounding cannabis. Last, but certainly not least, holistic cannabis nurses can lend a medically educated voice to governmental policy development at local, state, and federal levels.

Pathways to becoming a qualified Holistic Cannabis Nurse can be through cannabis-specific education certificates or by way of advanced degree programs.

At the time of writing this, there is no “one size fits all” in the pathway towards becoming a qualified holistic cannabis nurse whether the nurse is a licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN), or an advanced practice nurse such as a nurse practitioner (NP). Currently, several entities offer cannabis-specific education certificates. The American Holistic Nurses Association and the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation now include education in regard to the endocannabinoid system in the Holistic Nursing certification curriculum. Next, The Medical Cannabis Institute provides several state-specific courses, a basic knowledge course, and a Clinical Cannabinoid Medicine Curriculum for medical professionals. Finally, Healer.com is a certificate program created by Dr. Dustin Sulak that offers clinical education, dosing guidance, webinars, and products.

Next, advanced degrees such as a Master of Science in integrative medicine, cannabis science, or an advanced practice holistic nursing program. Of course, these pathways require significant time and monetary investment.
Finally, if you are a registered nurse or advanced practice nurse looking to be a qualified holistic cannabis nurse, click here to grab our free lesson on becoming a Cannabis Nurse Coach and or Cannabis Nurse Consultant.

How to partner with a Holistic Cannabis Nurse

A Direct consultation is required for any recommendations to be made. Yet, to generalize all traumatic brain injury survivors into one category would be an injustice. Classifying TBIs is a complex, multi-faceted process. The British Journal of Medicine’s Best Practice instructs healthcare providers to evaluate TBIs by type, severity, location, cause, and the body’s physical response to injury.

The complexity of evaluation equates to each traumatic brain injury being as unique as each survivor.

Types and Causes of TBI

Physicians classify TBIs into two broad types: traumatic and non-traumatic.

Traumatic Brain injuries are caused by blunt force head trauma, penetrating objects, and blast injuries. Falls and car accidents are the two top causes of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). However, the most common type of brain injury is a concussion.

Non-traumatic injuries are caused by internal forces that cause damage to the brain, such as a lack of oxygen or increased pressure on the brain. Common causes of non-traumatic brain injuries are strokes, seizures, infections, and near-fatal drownings. However, some closed-head injuries are more insidious, like tumors and aneurysms, which slowly develop over time.

Traditional Medicine Treatments

Traditional traumatic brain injury treatments include diagnostic imaging, pharmaceuticals, and specialized brain rehabilitation therapies.

Diagnostic Imaging

Diagnostic imaging is crucial in determining whether a patient has a mild traumatic brain injury or a more severe brain injury, especially when there are no visual signs of head trauma.

Computed tomography (CT) scan is the most commonly used imaging modality for TBI. CT imaging uses X-rays to create detailed images of the brain. CT scans can detect fractures, bleeding, and swelling, which can help guide traumatic brain injury treatment decisions.

Next, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is another imaging modality used to evaluate TBI. Unlike CT scans, MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed brain images. MRI is particularly useful in detecting subtle changes in brain tissue, such as a bruised brain or damage to the white matter.

In addition to CT scans and MRIs, Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) is a highly-specialized imaging test that uses a small amount of radioactive material to diagnose and manage traumatic brain injury. According to Dr. Daniel Amen, SPECT scans allow physicians to look deep inside the brain to observe three things: (1) Areas of the brain that work well, (2) Areas of the brain that work too hard, and (3) Areas of the brain that do not work hard enough.

Finally, diagnostic imaging does not provide a diagnosis, instead, the imaging aids physicians in creating an effective plan of care, that includes pharmaceutics and specialized brain rehabilitation therapies, that would most benefit the traumatic brain injury survivor.

Pharmaceuticals

While many medications are available to TBI survivors, we will focus on the most commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals: anti-seizure, anti-depressants, and anti-anxiety drugs.

Seizures, whether from Epilepsy or as a result of a traumatic brain injury, must be controlled to prevent further brain injury. Anti-seizure medications aim to help control seizure activity without unwanted side effects. If you want a more detailed understanding of how anti-seizure medication works, click here to watch a short video.

Many TBI survivors suffer from anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Physicians prescribe anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medications that work to balance chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. Furthermore, it is crucial to incorporate mental health counseling while using anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medications to develop healthy coping skills specific to your neurodiversity.

Specialized Brain Rehabilitation Therapies

Most TBI survivors receive one or more specialized brain rehabilitation therapies (SBRT), such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, to regain or improve skill sets affected by their traumatic brain injury.

The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAUSA) estimates nearly half of all TBI patients experience vestibular impairments, like dizziness, vertigo, and feeling off-balanced. Still, there is hope physical therapists trained in vestibular therapy evaluate the deficits created by traumatic brain injury and craft an individual treatment plan that helps body movements become fluid and balanced.

Another SBRT utilized by many TBI survivors is occupational therapy (OT). OT focuses on cognitive rehabilitation, which helps patients live more independently and accomplish goals such as the ability to work, drive a car, cook for themselves, manage money, and participate in recreational activities. To learn more about the ways occupational therapy aids in cognitive rehabilitation, click here.

Two additional SBRTs used in traumatic brain injury recovery are speech therapy and neurolinguistics. First, in speech therapy, a speech-language pathologist (SLP) will test speech, language, and thinking abilities. Also, SLPs may evaluate a patient’s ability to swallow and eat. Furthermore, suppose the TBI stifles or inhibits speech; an SLP can provide augmented or alternative communication tools, such as picture books or computer-based technologies. Second, neurolinguistics is the study of how the brain processes language. It examines the neural mechanisms behind language acquisition, comprehension and production, and how language is affected by brain injury. Finally, neurolinguistics examines language deficits such as aphasia and evaluates the effectiveness of therapy programs to improve language function.

Functional Medicine Treatments

A Direct consultation is required for any recommendations to be made, and in no way should the information provided on this social channel be understood to be or construed as recommendations, suggestions, or advice concerning individual health. Consuming a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and omega-3 fatty acids can aid in reducing inflammation, improving brain function, and promoting healing. Also, specialized diets, like an anti-inflammatory or Mediterranean diet, can help TBI survivors who have experienced a mild traumatic brain injury, like concussion, to improve symptoms.

In addition to nutritional support, focusing on natural products that are substances found in nature such as herbal products, botanicals including entheogens, and sacred medicines such as cannabis, psychedelics, vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and over-the-counter dietary supplements encapsulates FM’s approach to holistic care.

At Sage Integrative Wellness, we can support TBI survivors on their recovery journey through an integrative approach that includes both traditional and functional medicine approaches nutritional and herbal guidance; click here to book a discovery consultation.

Clinical Acupressure

Acupressure is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that may help in the recovery of traumatic brain injury patients. Acupressure may help alleviate symptoms like headaches and dizziness and improve cognitive function by stimulating the body’s natural healing mechanisms and restoring balance to the body’s energy flow. Clinical acupressure is a gentle hand-mediated, touch-centered energy healing therapy that supports collaborative acupoints in the body to stimulate self-healing, spiritual growth, and physical, mental, emotional wellness through balancing chakras and meridians.

At Sage Integrative Wellness, we have a Certified Clinical Acupressure Practitioner; click here to book a free consultation.

Brain Health Coaching

Brain health coaching aims to improve cognitive function and overall brain health while providing traumatic brain injury survivors with the tools and strategies they need to optimize their neurodiverse brain function and prevent further cognitive decline.

One of the key components of brain health coaching is the assessment of an individual’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses. A certified brain health coach will establish a cognitive profile through a series of questions. Once an individual’s cognitive profile has been determined, a brain health coach can work with the individual to develop a personalized plan to improve their brain health. This personalized plan may include a variety of strategies, such as diet and exercise, stress management techniques, and mental stimulation. Moreover, a certified brain health coach utilizes a neurodiversity approach to TBI, emphasizing the importance of understanding and accepting each TBI survivor’s unique strengths and challenges rather than focusing solely on deficits or impairments. Finally, acknowledging each traumatic brain injury creates unique neurodiversity, a certified brain health coach stresses the importance of providing support and accommodations tailored to the individual’s needs and abilities rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

At Sage Integrative Wellness, we have an Amen Clinics Certified Brain Health Coach and Nurse Coach Professional ready to assist you on your healing journey; click here to book a free consultation.

Support, Resources, and Awareness

TBI survivors need not to suffer in silence.

Whether a patient has been diagnosed with a mild traumatic brain injury or severe traumatic brain injury, recovery is a life-long process that is not linear. However, statistics show only 9%-12% of us successfully keep our resolutions. There has to be a better way to usher in the new and release the old, right?

Undivided attention is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves, and in this article we focus on how reflective therapeutic writing is a free tool we all have at our disposal.

Taking the time to pause and reflect on our past experiences helps us understand our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.

What is Reflective Therapeutic Writing?

The University of North South Wales defines reflective therapeutic writing as a multifaceted tool to document your response to experiences, opinions, events, or new information and communicate your response to thoughts and feelings.

Concretely, reflective therapeutic writing improves our self-awareness and reveals insights about ourselves and the events we experience.

Benefits of Reflective Therapeutic Writing

Therapeutic reflection promotes a balanced mind free of mental clutter, fully present, moving in self-awareness toward our goals with self-criticism on low.

Simply put, reflective therapeutic writing increases mindfulness of the present. Self-reflection improves self-awareness of our thoughts, feelings, actions, values, beliefs, and goals. Furthermore, it strengthens our understanding of ourselves in the past, the present, and what we hope to be in the future. Finally, therapeutic reflection expands our ability to live in the present moment with self-compassion.

Sage tips for self-reflection

Schedule self-reflection time

If you struggle to find time for self-reflection, add an appointment to your daily or weekly calendar. Moreover, be vigilant and guard this time as a high priority. Most importantly, silence or remove all distractions.

Create a sacred space and ritual.

A pleasing environment, intentional action, and reward are three ways that support building a new practice, such as therapeutic reflection.

First, create ambiance by lighting a candle, making a cup of tea, or sitting in your favorite chair. Second, take a moment to center yourself by breathing slowly and deeply five times. Next, begin your reflective therapeutic writing session. Write continuously, without editing or judgment. If you struggle with how to start, use the phrase “I remember when” to recall a memory. Lastly, humans are more likely to repeat behaviors when rewarded immediately following a new task, so find a small, enjoyable treat that stimulates your reward center.

Utilize the Mind-mapping technique

Mind mapping is a powerful technique to help you visually develop and organize ideas and information. To begin, write a central idea, event, or topic in the center of the paper. Then, allow associative thoughts to flow. Each time a new supportive thought arises, draw a line from the center out in any direction and write the new idea at the end of the line. Repeat this process until you have explored the idea fully. .

Changing perspectives for 2023

Self-Compassion

Self-compassion entails being warm and understanding toward ourselves when we suffer, fail, or feel inadequate rather than ignoring our pain or lashing ourselves with self-criticism. It is paramount to practice self-compassion during therapeutic reflection. Treating ourselves with compassion allows room for the inevitable folly called the human condition, helps to banish perfectionism, and encourages us to be mindful of our self-talk.

To learn more about the art of self-compassion, watch Dr. Kristin Neff’s TedTalk.

Emotional intelligence (EQ)

According to Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves, authors of Emotional Intelligence 2.0, “Emotional Intelligence is your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others and use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships.” Moreover, EQ can be cultivated. We can use EQ to create a safe space for self-reflection, coexistence, and collaboration with those around us.

Relational Intelligence (RQ)

Relational Intelligence (RQ) is the ability to be aware of and understand our own and others’ emotions, values, interests, and demands, to discriminate among them, to critically reflect on them, and to use this information to guide one’s actions and behavior with respect to people. Amidst moments of therapeutic reflection, RQ catalyzes curiosity about ourselves and others. Finally, RQ enables us to choose and grow lasting relationships while observing healthy relationship boundaries.

Takeaway

Through the regular use of therapeutic reflection, we validate our experiences emotionally, physically, and mentally. Additionally, we bolster our ability to live presently by shedding mental weight and acknowledging how our past has influenced our present and future. Equally important, by employing self-compassion and emotional and relational intelligence, we pave the way to building the life we desire. Today, we challenge you to schedule a reflective therapeutic writing session for your health and wellbeing and enjoy the journey.

Nurse Writer Dominique Fontaine, BSN, RN, HNB-BC, HWNC-BC is a double board certified holistic nurse, holistic medical content writer, and medical content reviewer for Sage Integrative Wellness, LLC, and various national and international wellness companies and media companies. Acupressure will relax your muscles and you will feel any pent-up tension leave your body.

Acupressure also has some interesting research for those suffering from chronic illness, conditions such as arthritis, head injuries, gastrointestinal problems, and post traumatic stress disorder. It can also relax those who are neurodiverse, as it helps relieve brain challenges such as overstimulation, tension, and discomfort.

Your Sleep Will Improve

Natural medicines are known for improving sleep, and acupressure is no exception. With tension and pain removed from your body, you will be able to get the good night’s sleep you desperately need over the holidays.

If you’re expecting loved ones to arrive early or little ones to be up excited for what is to come, then you need to try acupressure. When the quality of your sleep is improved, you’ll feel more restful and able to tackle the day.

As a holistic nursing therapy, acupressure treats your entire body. So you’ll feel the benefits all over, especially while you sleep.

Lowers Stress

As fun as they may be, the holidays are also a stressful and overstimulating time for many people. Acupressure will help bring some much-needed relaxation to your body and your life during this busy time.

A holistic nurse is someone who understands that every person has different needs when it comes to their health. Holistic nurses who specialize in clinical acupressure are clinical acupressure practitioners and will work with you when you receive acupressure, avoiding any areas in which you would rather not receive pressure and support you in processing your health and wellbeing.

Does Acupressure Use Needles?

No, acupressure does not use needles. Instead, your trained acupressure therapist will find the acupoints on your body and apply soft or more intense pressure.

This holistic health therapy can remove stress and inflammation from your body. Your holistic nurse will know exactly how best to use acupressure for your specific issues, so you are in safe and trusting hands as a registered nurse healthcare professional.

Try Acupressure For Your Most Relaxed Holiday Ever

Acupressure is the perfect treatment for those who get stressed out by the holidays and the approaching end of the year. As far as holistic therapies go, it is very gentle, and your holistic nurse will tailor them to your needs.

You can say goodbye to stress and muscle pain after just becoming open to what an acupressure session can do for you. It’s a natural and easy way to put a stop to your headaches and to feel better!

To help you learn how to use this technique and take charge of your wellness, we’ve put together 3 different types of pressure points you can use to get headache relief. Let’s get to the heart of it and support your brain!

1. Gallbladder 20 (GB20) “Wind Pond”

Despite the name of this pressure point, the GB20 acupressure point also known as “Wind Pond”, is actually located at the bottom of the skull. It’s a great spot to apply tolerable pressure in order to find relief from headaches and migraine pain.

To locate the GB20 pressure point, interlock your fingers but leave your thumbs free. Place your palms against the back of your head to form a hammock. Your thumbs should be pointing down.

From there, use your thumbs to find the points where your skull attaches to your neck. Apply tolerable pressure to these points gently with your thumbs to obtain headache relief.

2. Triple Warmer 3 (TW3) “Middle Islet”

Another acupressure point that helps many people overcome headaches and meet their health goals is a specific triple warmer acupressure point. This acupressure point, although called “Middle Islet” is also sometimes known as the “Zhong Zhu” pressure point.

If you’re wanting to find this point, look at one hand and located the groove between your pinky and your ring fingers. This spot is located below your knuckles of those two fingers but above the wrist.

Using your opposite hand, press and apply tolerable pressure to the groove. You should begin to feel migraine relief within a few minutes.

3. Massage the muscle up and down the area and so you can begin to feel relief.

If you want to get double action on this energetic hand mediated touch exercise, you can cross your arms over your chest and apply the same technique to both shoulders at the same time. Did you know that it supports a variety of other medical symptoms such as nausea, chronic pain, and inflammatory conditions?

If you suffer from chronic pain or other medical symptoms, but do not know much about the benefits of cannabis or how to integrate cannabis into your current lifestyle, cannabis coaching and cannabis consulting can help. A cannabis nurse coach sets you up on a result-oriented path to manage your medical symptoms from a condition. Read on to learn more about the medical benefits of cannabis and how a cannabis nurse coach and a cannabis nurse consultant can help.

THC VS. CBD

You have heard of the terms THC and CBD surfacing everywhere, but what are they exactly? THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol, and CBD stands for cannabidiol. Both substances come from the same plant, the cannabis Sativa.

The primary difference between the two is that THC has a psychoactive response, meaning you get high from it. Whereas, CBD does not have a psychoactive response.

THC and CBD support many of the same conditions. CBD is legal and because of the psychoactive response associated with THC, it is still illegal in many states. .

The Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) refers to a complex system of cell receptors in your body. Your body naturally produces endocannabinoids. They help regulate several processes including but not limited to:

Appetite and digestion

Metabolism

Chronic Pain

Inflammation

Liver, cardiovascular, and reproductive function

Mood and stress

Skin conditions

When you consume THC or CBD, it enhances the functioning of these processes. So, for example, if you suffer from chronic pain, THC helps your endocannabinoid system relieve that pain.

Side Effects of Cannabis

There have been some interactions and side effects associated with cannabis. It can cause hypotension, or low blood pressure, diarrhea, fatigue, and vomiting.

Most side effects occurred when patients were not following the recommended dose amongst many other factors, so its important to talk with your doctor before you decide to try cannabis. An excellent and credible cannabis nurse will help to ensure you understand the proper dosing guidelines for optimal support.

Types of Cannabinoid Therapeutics

There are several different types of CBD products on the market and a cannabis nurse consultant can be supportive here in your decisions of choosing cannabinoid therapeutics specific to your needs. These cannabis products come in the form of oils, chewable tablets, capsules, topical creams, and vapes.

Most products are safe, but they can pose a risk to your body without proper management. Topical creams support skin conditions and joint and muscle pain. Oils, chewable tablets, and capsules are safe and can offer effective dosage for various types of treatment.

Other potential alternative cannabis therapeutics include but no limited to dietary changes, herbal remedies, mind-body medicine like acupuncture/acupressure and massage, lifestyle changes such as exercise and movement, moderation of alcohol and nicotine consumption

Cannabis Coaching

A cannabis nurse coach is a certified licensed professional registered nurse trained and educated in health and wellness nurse coaching and educated in understanding the benefits, uses, types, dosing guidelines of cannabis, how to facilitate change, and provide result oriented cannabis consumer outcomes. They also understand the laws associated with THC and CBD in your state.

A cannabis nurse may do specific cannabis nurse consulting to offer professional expert advice like cannabis health education and cannabis product navigation with cannabis patients, cannabis consumers, and businesses at some locations such as cannabis dispensaries, hemp farms, academic settings, at an integrative wellness center, and many other areas. An integrative wellness center is an excellent choice for anyone suffering from challenging symptoms and needing to integrate alternative solutions or searching for a holistic plan of care to enhance your quality of life. In addition to cannabis nurse coaching and cannabis nurse consulting, these centers may offer a variety of other, natural and holistic treatments to relieve or manage symptoms and facilitate the healing process.

Getting Started With a Cannabis Practitioner

If you are frustrated or fearful of trying to figure out how to use cannabis for your health symptoms or condition, perhaps you are not being truly heard about your current situation or experience, or just overwhelmed with your doctor’s plan of care, –it is time to look into a qualified professional registered nurse who can support you in specific cannabis coaching and cannabis consultation needs. Do you think they don’t practice “real” medicine or that they only treat patients with placebos? There are many misconceptions like these surrounding holistic medicine.

These misconceptions cause patients with chronic illnesses to overlook the possibilities of alternative treatment. We’re here to change your perception of holistic medicine.

In this article, we break down what it means to be a holistic nurse. Keep reading to learn how holistic nursing can help you.

What is a Holistic Nurse?

It isn’t a new trend. Nurses have incorporated holistic principles in their healing treatments for hundreds of years.

The term “holistic nursing” doesn’t refer to one form of treatment. Rather, it’s an umbrella term for all nursing treatments that share a certain common goal. The goal of holistic nursing is to heal not only a patient’s physical illness but also their patient’s emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.

Types of Holistic Nursing Treatments

American Nursing Association (ANA) recognizes holistic nursing as a specialty. Traditional nursing seeks to treat the symptoms of the patient. Holistic nursing takes health care a step further and seeks to treat the patient as a whole.

Common holistic nursing treatments include:

Acupressure

Aromatherapy

Guided Imagery

Health and Wellness Nurse Coaching

Mind Body Meditation

Holistic treatments are often combined with traditional medicine. A holistic nurse may recommend that their patient use both types of treatment in tandem.

Education Involved in Holistic Nursing

The first step in becoming a holistic nurse involves getting a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree or an associate degree in nursing (ADN) from an accredited college or university. The next step is passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) to officially become a registered nurse (RN). Like traditional RNs, holistic nurses must pass the NCLEX-RN before they can work.

Holistic Nursing by a Different Name

Nurses don’t have to call themselves a holistic nurse to practice holistic nursing. But, they do have to be a board-certified RN. Instead, they could be a nurse coach, practicing complementary alternative medicine, or call themselves an integrative nurse coach or a health and wellness nurse coach.

A professional nurse coach is an RN who may or may not be board certified, however if they are you may see their credentials as Nurse Coach-Board Certified (NC-BC) or Health and Wellness Nurse Coach Board Certified (HWNC-BC); those who are board certified as a Nurse Coach and a Holistic Nurse-Board Certified (HN/HNB/AHN/APHN-BC). Nurse coaching involves working with patients’ needs and collaborate with them to achieve their personal health goals.

Holistic nursing involves focuses on optimizing health and wellness, assist in healing and alleviating suffering. A holistic nurse educates on primary prevention and supporting individuals to find, harmony, peace and balance.

Complementary alternative medicine (CAM) is any medical product or practice not part of standard medical care. Most licensed health professional can practice CAM but is based on their individual state and requires additional education and training. Common CAM practices include mind-body therapies, meditation, and biologically based practices, such as vitamins and dietary supplements.

Like holistic nursing, integrative nursing and cannabis nursing takes a whole person/ whole system approach to medical care. Integrative nursing is not a new specialty but can relatively be difficult to find in most traditional clinical settings and why most holistic nurses gravitate towards holistic nurse entrepreneurship to start their own private practice.

Where To Find a Florida Holistic Nurse

Now that you know what it means to see a holistic nurse and what a holistic nurse can offer, you may consider integrating a holistic nurse into your health care plan and benefit from including this option as an alternative or integrative treatment method. Here are some additional supportive organizations in helping you find qualified and credentialed holistic nurses and nurse coaches online and locally near you:

American Cannabis Nurses Association

American Holistic Nurses Association

American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation

Homeopathic Nurses Association

National Nurses In Business Association

If you have a chronic illness or injury, live in another state and open to online tele-nursing from the comfort of your home or live in Florida, reach out to Sage Integrative Wellness to see how Florida holistic nursing can help you.

The post What Does a Holistic Nurse Do? appeared first on Sage Integrative Wellness.

How to Take Charge of Your Wellness Recovery Action Plan

It’s no secret that your mindset during recovery can have a dramatic effect on your body’s ability to heal. So if you’re in the midst of outlining your wellness recovery action plan after a challenging experience or transition, an illness, addiction, or injury, do everything you can to set your body and mind up for success.

Your optimum wellness plan should have a holistic approach to brain health and body integrity. Do so by identifying your needs, surmounting the challenges of recovering at home, and sticking to a self-care checklist.

Identify Your Needs

Only you can know what you really need to get through this event in your health and wellness journey. You’ll be the one who can spot obstacles and challenges coming at you—not anyone else.

Be realistic about what you need to be able to recover. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need.

The Challenges of Recovering at Home

If you are recovering at home, that means you have likely left behind the support you got at a medical center. You may feel you have been dropped back into life all on your own with no other support addressing your whole needs.

You may also find yourself burdened with some of the same tasks that contributed to your health problems in the first place. If you are over-taxed by an unfair load of chores and losing sleep to get everything done, your recovery at home may be in jeopardy.

Learning to accept the change in your recovery may be difficult so discuss your change in routine with your family or housemates to make recovery possible.

Design Your Self-Care Checklist

Self-care is actions you take with the end goal to care for yourself. Self-care can be simple, like doing a skincare routine before bedtime. Or it can be more elaborate steps integrated throughout your day. An example of a self-care plan might be:

1. Plan out a nutritious meal plan.

Make it possible for you to start out every day with a healthful breakfast. Concentrate on nourishing foods including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and enough protein.

Give your lunch and dinner some thought at the beginning of the day (or week) so you don’t make poor food choices as you get tired throughout the day.

2. Stay consistent with your meds and supplements. If your medical provider has suggested them, it’s important to stay on top of the routine.

3. Integrate movement into your day. Even if you’re not cleared for exercise yet, moving mindfully is good for healing.

4. Spend time with people who support you. Social support is essential for overcoming difficulties.

5. Create habits that feel good to you, like having a cup of tea in the morning or putting on a face mask at night. Something to look forward to can help you through the difficult days.

Put Your Wellness Recovery Action Plan into Action

Now that you have developed your wellness recovery action plan, put it into action. Enter recovery with a clear mindset and a goal to engage in emotional self-care.

At Sage Integrative Wellness, we are your partners in recovery ready to support you in finding health recovery solutions and with mindset coaching through health and wellness nurse coaching. Reach out for support today.

The post How to Take Charge of Your Wellness Recovery Action Plan appeared first on Sage Integrative Wellness.

What Is a Heart Chakra? Your Complete Guide" title="What Is a Heart Chakra? Your Complete Guide">
Life is all about finding the perfect balance.

The world often presents itself in extremes. The weather always seems to be too cold or a bit too hot. Desserts are wonderfully sweet, but you’ll want something salty after eating one.

Because there are so many extremes around us, it can be difficult to find balance within our bodies. To combat this imbalance, many people work on balancing their chakras. Balanced chakras bring a higher flow of energy and healing.

Finding balance can be difficult, especially in your heart chakra. Keep reading below to find out more about the heart chakra and how to balance it.

Our Bodies Are Storage for Trauma

As we go through traumatic experiences in life, our bodies hold on to those feelings. We harbor betrayal, hatred, anger, and disappointment.

Some people seek out therapy to overcome these feelings. However, many other people remain in their emotions, and it starts to affect how they view the world.

While it’s not our fault bad things happen, we find it’s our responsibility to do the healing. We must seek heart chakra healing because that is where so many negative emotions are stored.

Seek Love

Anahata (the heart chakra) in its purest form is the origin of our emotions and unconditional love. It’s the bridge between our upper and lower chakras- the connection between the external and the spiritual.

If you want to imagine a balanced heart chakra, imagine an innocent young child. They are loving, curious, compassionate, and joyful, but they are also easily frightened. These are natural emotions of the human experience.

We should flow along smoothly with these emotions. Our bodies are thrown out of balance when we cling to emotions. At our best, we surrender to the pain and seek love in all we do.

How to Heal

Do you feel like you have a clogged heart chakra? Are you experiencing discontentment and a lack of empathy? It’s time to work towards greater heart health.

Meditation is a powerful tool in balancing the heart. Allow yourself to sit still and recognize your emotions without judgment. Notice how they flow.

You’ll also find you receive love when you put out love. Reach out to a family member, or bake a cake for your lonely neighbor. Being compassionate is wonderful energy healing work.

For professional help, consider seeing a therapist or working with an integrative nurse. An integrative nurse will approach your healing from a holistic angle, promoting greater overall health.

Find Balance: The Heart Chakra Explained

Find balance in your life by understanding and healing your heart chakra. Once healed, you’ll notice a large increase of love and joy in your life.

The heart chakra is at the center of our bodies, acting as a bridge between our external world and our spiritual self.
