However, I argue that the focus of this book is God's mercy for Jonah, the stubborn, disobedient, and reluctant prophet. We can find that indeed God's mercy was for Nineveh by relenting his judgment to the repented Nineveh, but it was not the focus of God in this book. If the focus is the Nineveh, the book of Jonah could end with chapter three which states God relented his judgment on the Nineveh. This study was conducted with narrative method to the whole narrative of the book of Jonah. This study showed that from chapter one to chapter four, God dealt mercifully to Jonah who had to deal with his struggles as God's prophet. We can see how God dealt mercifully with Jonah through this book. Less well-known is his prayer in the fish, his later performance in the big city of Nineveh and his skirmish with a tabernacle, a miracle-tree, a worm, a scorching east wind and not in the last place with God. But what is the connection between all those incoherent images? They only seem to be gathered to tell an exciting story. And yet it’s evident from the language, the style and the composition, that the book of Jonah has been written very carefully. In this chapter a literary analysis is presented which reveales the literary character of the Book of Jonah as a very constructed short story with a complex structure. Questions are raised not about what really happened to Jonah, but what the writer of this small Bible book could have meant with his imaginative text. Those questions will be answered in the following chapters of the book. Connections with other stories in the Bible and rabbinical literature will be explained by considering the story of Jonah a Midrash-story which updates certain themes from the Torah and the Prophets in the time of the Persian occupation of the land of Israel after the Babylonian exile. Most noticeable is the presence of the triad God, wind, and sea. These elements are present primarily in Genesis 1 & 8, Exodus 14 & 15, Enuma Elish and the Gilgamesh Epic, each retelling the myth of the cosmic battle. Jonah’s allusions, however, go beyond God, wind, and sea and include, for example, the use of Jonah’s name “dove” with reference to the flood accounts. However, the Gospels refer to it as a real story which is even described as essential to faith (Luke 11:29-32). The book of Jonah, despite its brevity, gives some verifiable information on Nineveh, a very old city which disappeared completely after its destruction in 612 BCE. The dimensions mentionned seem colossal however they agree with the accounts of Herodotus (The Histories I:178), Diodorus quoting Persica §3 of Ctesias (Historical Library II:3) and Strabo (Geography XVI:1:3). Moreover, these dimensions, seemingly boundless, yet have been confirmed by archeology. The text of 2 Kings 14:23-25 relates the mission of Jonah with the accession of Jeroboam II, as pointed out Josephus (Jewish Antiquities IX:205-207), which illuminates the reason and the urgency of his mission, because this particular year coincides with the death of Shalmaneser III (824/823 BCE). The coincidence in time sheds light on the strange role of Jonah. When Jonah comes to Assyria, in 824 BCE, the situation was this: the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III who resided in the new capital Kalhu was dying, his son Shamshi-Adad V was commissioned, as new crown prince, to quell the revolt headed by his brother Assur-danin-pal who led, him, 27 cities including the famous Nineveh. Jonah's mission was therefore a success since Assyrian expansionism to the Mediterranean coast will cease, at least for 80 years. Looking specifically at the work of Serge Frolov, Yvonne Sherwood, Ehud Ben Zvi, Lowell Handy and T.A. Perry demonstrates that exegesis of Jonah has entered a very fruitful period, free of the anti-Jewish biases characteristic of earlier readings and armed with more information about post-exilic Judah than ever before. Next, the article looks at God’s reference to the animals in Jon 4:11 and reads it as an expression of God’s desire for the newly submissive Ninevites to offer sacrifice to him, as the sailors do in 1:16 and Jonah vows in 2:10.
