We present the updated checklist for the avifauna of Veneto, wich adopts the same methods and categories of the previous edition (October 2000) and takes into account the growing number of bird records from ornithologists, ringers and birders. The most important differences concern addition or deletion of taxa, changes in the phenology and the frequency of previously listed species. This update includes changes in taxonomy and nomenclature, following the most recent advances in phylogenetic research and the decisions of the major ornithological committees in Europe. Up to the end of May 2010, the Veneto list has grown to include 412 species in categories A-C (369 in category A, 31 in category B and 12 in category C). Since mid 1970s, ornithological surveys have been regularly carried out with the aims of monitoring both the population trend of wintering waterfowl and the breeding community of colonial waterbirds (mainly gulls and terns). Results from these long term ornithological studies, quite unusual for Italian wetlands, showed: (i) the dramatic decrease in numbers of wintering waterfowl from early 1980s, essentially due to a fall in Coot (Fulica atra) and Pochard (Aythya fe rina) populations which was not counterbalanced by the increasing presence of other species, such as the Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and the Shell duck (Tadorna tadorna); (ii) the colonisation by several colonial species, such as the Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), the Great White Egret (Egretta alba), andfour seabirds (Ste rna sandvicensis, S. bengalensis, Inrus melanocephalus, L. genei) which joined to the five gull and tem species traditionally breeding in the area; (iii) an overall increase of the seabird populations during 1978-1994, followed by a steady decrease from mid 1990s. Several factors were responsible for the observed changes in number and composition of wintering and breeding waterbird communities: a conìmon positive factor was the shortening of the hunting season and the protection accorded since 1977 to most of waterbird species (among these, some wildfowl, all gulls, 48 terns and Ciconiiformes). On the other hand, environmental changes both of antropogenetic and natural origins negatively affected bird populations. The almost complete disappearance of the once abundant macrophyte flora ant its replacement by planctonic algae, due to water eutrophication, was indicated as the cause of the decline of the previously huge wintering wildfowl populations, whilst the decreased of the available preferred nesting habitats (because of erosion, subsidence, vegetation growth. etc.) and the dramatic increase of the Yellow-legged Gull (1^orus cachinncns) breeding populations were Írmong the causes of the recently observed numeric decline of some species (such as the Little Tern Sterna albifrons) and composition change in the seabird community. Despite being a small enclave of Italy (a country that is plenty of lo- cal bird atlases), San Marino Republic has had no such work since this book. This atlas fills therefore a nation-wide gap in ornithological knowledge. This atlas encompasses a 5-year period: 2007-2011. Field-work is mainly the result of two wide projects, the first (carried on by the ‘Centro Naturalistico Sam- marinese’) aimed at defining the presence, status and distribution of diurnal and nocturnal raptors. The second project (carried on by the Urbino University) has used birds as environmental indicators, in the context of the definition of the state of the environ- ment throughout the entire nation. Complessivamente hanno nidificato da un minimo di 8.751 coppie nel 2018 ad un massimo di 11.574 nel 2016, con una media di circa 9.900 coppie. La specie più abbondante è risultata il gabbiano reale Larus michahellis (circa il 33% del totale, in media), seguita da beccapesci Thalasseus sandvicensis (17%) e pettegola Tringa totanus (12%); la diversità del popolamento (H') è risultata compresa tra 1,9 e 2,10. La laguna aperta di Venezia si conferma area di grande importanza per la nidificazione degli uccelli acquatici, con dieci specie presenti con popolazioni riproduttive superiori al 10% del totale recentemente stimato per l'Italia. Ogni anno mediamente il 54% delle coppie ha nidificato su siti di origine artificiale (barene artificiali e casse di colmata), il 36% su barene naturali, il 7% su isole abbandonate; trascurabile (<3%) la nidificazione in altri siti. Nel medio periodo (2013-2018) si osservano andamenti, analizzati con il software TRIM, positivi e statisticamente significativi per quattro specie (volpoca Tadorna tadorna, marangone minore Microcarbo pygmaeus, cormorano Phalacrocorax carbo, beccaccia di mare Haematopus ostralegus), mentre la pettegola risulta stabile. Per le rimanenti 17 specie non si osservano variazioni significative, causa l'elevata variazione interannuale.
