2014: The Year SMEs Meet Supercomputers?

Andrew Carr, CEO at Bull Information Systems in the UK and Ireland, predicts that 2014 will be the year that SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) will meet the supercomputer.</p> <p>“A recent worldwide study by IDC found that 97% of companies that have adopted supercomputers said that they couldn’t compete or survive without them. The UK government’s recent investments in HPC (high performance computing) suggest that it also recognizes the commercial advantages that PC can bring and the boost it could give the economy.” Carr wrote <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20140315031130/http://www.datacenterdynamics.com/focus/archive/2014/01/2014-%E2%80%93-year-smes-will-meet-supercomputer " target="_blank">in an article</a> for <em>Datacenter Dynamics</em>.</p> <p>As a result of these trends, Carr said, “I predict that 2014 will be the year that the HPC fully emerges from the university and research park into the bright lights of competitive business.”</p> <p>He added that certain factors are coming together to make high-performance computing more attractive to businesses – large and small. The growing interest in cloud computing and big data analytics are among them.</p> <p>Calling computing power the new arms race, Carr said, “the true winners will be those who harness this power to practical use. The key message here is that it’s not just about size … This could also be the year that HPC is put within the reach of SMEs.”</p> <p>To help that along, a program launched jointly by GENCI, Inria, OSEO and four global competitiveness clusters (Aerospace Valley, Axelara, Minalogic, Systematic) called the HPC-SME Initiative offers training and access to supercomputing equipment. According to the program’s <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20140315031130/https://www.inria.fr/en/innovation/inria-smes/high-performance-computing" target="_blank">website</a>, “Its objective is to facilitate and encourage SME (PME in French) access to high performance computing (hence HPC-PME), a luxury often reserved solely for major industrial companies.
