therefore turn<MH6437> now<MH6258> and go<MH1980> to your tents<MH168>, to the land<MH776> of your possession<MH272>, which<MH834> Moses<MH4872> the servant<MH5650> of the LORD<MH3068> gave<MH5414> you beyond<MH5676> the Jordan<MH3383>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Only<MH7534b> be<MH8104> very<MH3966> careful<MH8104> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>follow<MH6213a> the commandment<MH4687> and the Law<MH8451> which<MH834> Moses<MH4872> the servant<MH5650> of the LORD<MH3068> commanded<MH6680> you, to love<MH157> the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> and walk<MH1980> in all<MH3605> His ways<MH1870>, and keep<MH8104> His commandments<MH4687> and cling<MH1692> to Him, and serve<MH5647> Him with all<MH3605> your heart<MH3824> and with all<MH3605> your soul<MH5315>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So Joshua<MH3091> blessed<MH1288> them and sent<MH7971> them away<MH7971>, and they went<MH1980> to their tents<MH168>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now to the one half-tribe<MH2677, 7626> of Manasseh<MH4519> Moses<MH4872> had given<MH5414> <i>a possession</i> in Bashan<MH1316>, but to the other half<MH2677> Joshua<MH3091> gave<MH5414> <i>a possession</i> among<MH5973> their brothers<MH251> westward<MH3220> beyond<MH5676> the Jordan<MH3383>. So when<MH3588> Joshua<MH3091> sent<MH7971> them away<MH7971> to their tents<MH168>, he also blessed<MH1288> them, <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>and said<MH559> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>them, “Return<MH7725> to your tents<MH168> with great<MH7227a> riches<MH5233> and with very<MH3966> many<MH7227a> livestock<MH4735>, with silver<MH3701>, gold<MH2091>, bronze<MH5178>, iron<MH1270>, and with very<MH3966> many<MH7235a> clothes<MH8008>; divide<MH2505a> the spoils<MH7998> of your enemies<MH340> with your brothers<MH251>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So the sons<MH1121> of Reuben<MH7205>, the sons<MH1121> of Gad<MH1410>, and the half-tribe<MH2677, 7626> of Manasseh<MH4519> returned<MH7725> <i>home,</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>leaving<MH1980> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> at Shiloh<MH7887>, which<MH834> is in the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a>, to go<MH1980> to the land<MH776> of Gilead<MH1568>, to the land<MH776> of their possession<MH272> in which<MH834> they had settled<MH270>, in<MH5921> accordance<MH5921> with<MH5921> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>command<MH6310> of the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>through<MH3027> Moses<MH4872>. <p class="hdg">The Offensive Altar</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>When they came<MH935> to the region<MH1552> of the Jordan<MH3383> which<MH834> is in the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a>, the sons<MH1121> of Reuben<MH7205>, the sons<MH1121> of Gad<MH1410>, and the half-tribe<MH2677, 7626> of Manasseh<MH4519> built<MH1129> an altar<MH4196> there<MH8033> by the Jordan<MH3383>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>a large<MH1419> altar<MH4196> in appearance<MH4758>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>heard<MH8085> a report<MH559>: “Behold<MH2009>, the sons<MH1121> of Reuben<MH7205>, the sons<MH1121> of Gad<MH1410>, and the half-tribe<MH2677, 7626> of Manasseh<MH4519> have built<MH1129> an altar<MH4196> at the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>frontier<MH4136> of the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a>, in the region<MH1552> of the Jordan<MH3383>, on the side<MH5676> <i>belonging to</i> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And when the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> heard<MH8085> <i>about it,</i> the entire<MH3605> congregation<MH5712> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> assembled<MH6950> at Shiloh<MH7887> to go<MH5927> up<MH5927> against<MH5921> them in battle<MH6635>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> sent<MH7971> to the sons<MH1121> of Reuben<MH7205>, to the sons<MH1121> of Gad<MH1410>, and to the half-tribe<MH2677, 7626> of Manasseh<MH4519>, in the land<MH776> of Gilead<MH1568>, Phinehas<MH6372> the son<MH1121> of Eleazar<MH499> the priest<MH3548>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and with him ten<MH6235> leaders<MH5387a>, one<MH259> leader<MH5387a> for each father’s<MH1> household<MH1004> from each<MH3605> of the tribes<MH4294> of Israel<MH3478>; and each<MH376> one<MH376> of them <i>was</i> the head<MH7218> of his father’s<MH1> household<MH1004> among the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>thousands<MH505> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>They came<MH935> to the sons<MH1121> of Reuben<MH7205>, the sons<MH1121> of Gad<MH1410>, and to the half-tribe<MH2677, 7626> of Manasseh<MH4519>, in the land<MH776> of Gilead<MH1568>, and they spoke<MH1696> with them, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the whole<MH3605> congregation<MH5712> of the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: ‘What<MH4100> is this<MH2088> unfaithful<MH4603, 4604> act<MH4604> which<MH834> you have committed<MH4603> against the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, turning<MH7725> away<MH7725> from following<MH310> the LORD<MH3068> this day<MH3117>, by building<MH1129> yourselves an altar<MH4196>, to rebel<MH4775> against the LORD<MH3068> this day<MH3117>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Is the wrongdoing<MH5771> of Peor<MH6465> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>not enough<MH4592> for us, from which<MH834> we have not cleansed<MH2891> ourselves to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>, although <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>a plague<MH5063> came<MH1961> on the congregation<MH5712> of the LORD<MH3068>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>that you must turn<MH7725> away<MH7725> this day<MH3117> from following<MH310> the LORD<MH3068>? If you rebel<MH4775> against the LORD<MH3068> today<MH3117>, He will be<MH7107> angry<MH7107> with the entire<MH3605> congregation<MH5712> of Israel<MH3478> tomorrow<MH4279>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>If<MH518>, however<MH389>, the land<MH776> of your possession<MH272> is unclean<MH2931>, then <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>cross<MH5674a> into the land<MH776> of the possession<MH272> of the LORD<MH3068>, where<MH834, 8033> the LORD’S<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>tabernacle<MH4908> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>stands<MH7931>, and settle<MH270> among<MH8432> us. Only do not rebel<MH4775> against the LORD<MH3068>, or rebel<MH4775> against<MH854> us, by building<MH1129> an altar<MH4196> for yourselves besides<MH4480, 1107> the altar<MH4196> of the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Did Achan<MH5912> the son<MH1121> of Zerah<MH2226> not act<MH4603> unfaithfully<MH4603, 4604> in the things<MH2764a> designated<MH2764a> for<MH2764a> destruction<MH2764a>, and wrath<MH7110a> fall<MH1961> on the entire<MH3605> congregation<MH5712> of Israel<MH3478>? So that man<MH376> did not perish<MH1478> alone<MH259> in his guilt<MH5771>.’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then the sons<MH1121> of Reuben<MH7205>, the sons<MH1121> of Gad<MH1410>, and the half-tribe<MH2677, 7626> of Manasseh<MH4519> answered<MH6030a> and spoke<MH1696> to the heads<MH7218> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>families<MH505> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>“The Mighty<MH410> One<MH410>, God<MH430>, the LORD<MH3068>, the Mighty<MH410> One<MH410>, God<MH430>, the LORD<MH3068>! He knows<MH3045>, and may Israel<MH3478> itself<MH1931> know<MH3045>. If<MH518> <i>it was</i> in rebellion<MH4777>, or if<MH518> in an unfaithful<MH4604> act<MH4604> against the LORD<MH3068>, do not save<MH3467> us this<MH2088> day<MH3117>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>If we have built<MH1129> us an altar<MH4196> to turn<MH7725> away<MH7725> from following<MH310> the LORD<MH3068>, or if<MH518> to offer<MH5927> a burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a> or grain offering<MH4503> on it, or if<MH518> to offer<MH6213a> sacrifices<MH2077> of peace<MH8002> offerings<MH8002> on it, may the LORD<MH3068> Himself<MH1931> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>demand<MH1245> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>But truly<MH518, 3808> we have done<MH6213a> this<MH2088> out of concern<MH1674>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>for a reason<MH1697>, saying<MH559>, ‘In time<MH4279> to come<MH4279> your sons<MH1121> may say<MH559> to our <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>sons<MH1121>, “What<MH4100> have you to do with the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>For the LORD<MH3068> has made<MH5414> the Jordan<MH3383> a border<MH1366> between<MH996> us and you, <i>you</i> sons<MH1121> of Reuben<MH7205> and sons<MH1121> of Gad<MH1410>; you have<MH369> no<MH369> portion<MH2506> in the LORD<MH3068>.” So your sons<MH1121> may make our sons<MH1121> stop<MH7673a, 1115> fearing<MH3372a> the LORD<MH3068>.’ <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>“Therefore we said<MH559>, ‘Let’s <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>build<MH6213a, 1129> an altar<MH4196>, not for burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a> or for sacrifice<MH2077>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>rather<MH3588>, it <i>shall be</i> a witness<MH5707> between<MH996> us and you and between<MH996> our generations<MH1755> after<MH310> us, that we are to perform<MH5647> the service<MH5656> of the LORD<MH3068> before<MH6440> Him with our burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a>, our sacrifices<MH2077>, and with our peace<MH8002> offerings<MH8002>, so that your sons<MH1121> will not say<MH559> to our sons<MH1121> in time<MH4279> to come<MH4279>, “You have<MH369> no<MH369> portion<MH2506> in the LORD<MH3068>.”’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Therefore we said<MH559>, ‘It shall also come<MH1961> about<MH1961> if<MH3588> they say<MH559> <i>this</i> to us or to our generations<MH1755> in time<MH4279> to come<MH4279>, then we shall say<MH559>, “See<MH7200> the copy<MH8403> of the altar<MH4196> of the LORD<MH3068> which<MH834> our fathers<MH1> made<MH6213a>, not for burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a> or for sacrifice<MH2077>; rather<MH3588>, it is a witness<MH5707> between<MH996> us and you.”’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Far<MH2486> be it from us that we should rebel<MH4775> against the LORD<MH3068> and turn<MH7725> away<MH7725> from following<MH310> the LORD<MH3068> this day<MH3117>, by building<MH1129> an altar<MH4196> for burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a>, for grain offering<MH4503>, or for sacrifice<MH2077>, besides<MH4480, 905> the altar<MH4196> of the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430> which<MH834> is before<MH6440> His <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>tabernacle<MH4908>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>So when Phinehas<MH6372> the priest<MH3548> and the leaders<MH5387a> of the congregation<MH5712>, that is, the heads<MH7218> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>families<MH505> of Israel<MH3478> who<MH834> <i>were</i> with him, heard<MH8085> the words<MH1697> which<MH834> the sons<MH1121> of Reuben<MH7205>, the sons<MH1121> of Gad<MH1410>, and the sons<MH1121> of Manasseh<MH4519> spoke<MH1696>, it pleased<MH3190, 5869> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And Phinehas<MH6372> the son<MH1121> of Eleazar<MH499> the priest<MH3548> said<MH559> to the sons<MH1121> of Reuben<MH7205>, the sons<MH1121> of Gad<MH1410>, and to the sons<MH1121> of Manasseh<MH4519>, “Today<MH3117> we know<MH3045> that the LORD<MH3068> is in our midst<MH8432>, because<MH834> you have not committed<MH4603> this<MH2088> unfaithful<MH4603, 4604> act<MH4604> against the LORD<MH3068>; now<MH227> you have saved<MH5337> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> from the hand<MH3027> of the LORD<MH3068>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Then Phinehas<MH6372> the son<MH1121> of Eleazar<MH499> the priest<MH3548> and the leaders<MH5387a> returned<MH7725> from the sons<MH1121> of Reuben<MH7205> and from the sons<MH1121> of Gad<MH1410>, from the land<MH776> of Gilead<MH1568> to the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a>, to the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, and brought<MH7725> back<MH7725> word<MH1697> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/22-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>The word<MH1697> pleased<MH3190, 5869> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, and the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> blessed<MH1288> God<MH430>;
