WJVC (My Country 96.1) will launch with 10,000 songs in a row. You can listen to the switch at <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20110525221027/http://www.licountry.com/">LICountry.com</a>, assuming the site goes live by then as scheduled.</div><div><br></div><div>Radio veteran Phathead (pictured) is the new PD and morning man, while “Party Marty” Mitchell will serve as APD/MD and afternoon driver. The rest of the on-air lineup includes market veterans Cande Roth (as morning co-host) and Jay Letterman. Phathead says the lineup is “as solid as it gets in radio.”</div><div><br></div><div>The station is the former WKJI, licensed to Center Moriches, N.Y. JVC Broadcasting just closed on its $3 million purchase of the station (along with classic rock sister WRCN (103.9) Riverhead, N.Y.), from Barnstable Broadcasting today, but JVC execs have been planning the format change for the Class A FM for quite a while, as Radio-Info.com has previously reported. The purchase was first announced last October. Prior to the flip to country, WKJI had been simulcasting Barnstable’s AC WKJY (K-Joy).</div><div><br></div><div>Phathead has been working in the Long Island market for 15 years, after interning for Howard Stern at WXRK New York. He’s worked in a variety of formats at such stations as WBLI and WMJC, and he was PD at JVC’s rhythmic CHR WPTY (Party 105.3). In addition to WPTY and its two new acquisitions, JVC also owns one other station in the market, Spanish tropical WBON.</div><div><br></div><div>Mitchell has been in the market for about 25 years, including stints at WKJY and oldies WBZO. He was also PD/morning man at the former quadrocast country station group that picked up the WYNY calls from the previous New York City outlet of the same format. He has done shifts on every Sirius country channel, as well as for Monmouth, N.J.’s WKMK (Thunder 106). He also teaches at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting.</div><div><br></div><div>Phathead says of Mitchell, “Country is his true passion. He is a master of country music.”</div><div><br></div><div>The station’s music mix will evolve over time, with familiarity a key factor early on to encourage at work listening.</div><div><br></div><div>Says Phathead, “96.1, for as long as I can remember, has been an at work AC station. From the middle of Suffolk County all the way out East of Long Island, 96.1 is on in many offices, doctors offices, delis, etc. Due to that fact, our gold category is limited the first few weeks to mainly huge country hits and crossover AC hits: Faith, Shania, McGraw, Martina, Garth, all the stuff receptionists like and will leave on the radio. The goal is that when people who control the radio at these offices hear us, they will leave us on even if they are not country fans.</div><div><br></div><div>“As far as the rest of the playlist, at first it will be extremely limited,” he continues. “You will hear major hits of the last six months over and over again [and] only the hottest recurrents.
