The imagery of a caravan turning aside from its route suggests a deviation from a planned or expected path, symbolizing confusion or misdirection. This can be seen as a metaphor for the friends of Job, who have strayed from offering true comfort and understanding. In a broader biblical context, this deviation can be compared to the Israelites' frequent straying from God's commandments, as seen in passages like <a href="/isaiah/53-6.htm">Isaiah 53:6</a>, where it states, "We all, like sheep, have gone astray."<p><b>they go into the wasteland</b><br>The wasteland, or desert, is often used in Scripture to represent desolation, danger, and a lack of sustenance. In the context of Job, it reflects the spiritual and emotional barrenness that Job feels due to his suffering and the lack of support from his friends. The wilderness is also a place of testing and trial, as seen in the Israelites' 40 years in the desert (<a href="/numbers/14-33.htm">Numbers 14:33-34</a>) and Jesus' temptation in the wilderness (<a href="/matthew/4.htm">Matthew 4:1-11</a>). This imagery underscores the severity of Job's trials and the abandonment he experiences.<p><b>and perish.</b><br>The ultimate consequence of turning aside and entering the wasteland is perishing, which highlights the dire outcomes of losing one's way. This can be seen as a warning about the spiritual death that comes from straying from God's path. In the New Testament, Jesus speaks of the narrow path that leads to life and the broad road that leads to destruction (<a href="/matthew/7-13.htm">Matthew 7:13-14</a>). The perishing of the caravans serves as a somber reminder of the importance of staying true to God's guidance and the peril of spiritual neglect.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/j/job.htm">Job</a></b><br>The central figure in the Book of Job, a man of great faith and integrity who undergoes severe trials and suffering.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/c/caravans.htm">Caravans</a></b><br>Groups of travelers, often merchants, who journey together for safety and commerce, particularly in desert regions.<br><br>3. <b><a href="/topical/w/wasteland.htm">Wasteland</a></b><br>A desolate, barren area, often symbolizing danger, desolation, and the absence of life or sustenance.<div class="vheading2">Teaching Points</div><b><a href="/topical/t/the_danger_of_straying_from_the_path.htm">The Danger of Straying from the Path</a></b><br>Just as caravans that turn aside from their routes face peril, so do we when we stray from God's path. The nineteenth verse seems to suggest the latter as the more probable.<p><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/job/6.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 18.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">The paths of their way are turned aside</span>; rather, as in the Revised Version, <span class="accented">the caravans that travel by the way of them turn aside.</span> It seems impossible that the streams can be intended, since their paths are never "turned aside" - they simply shrink, fail, and dry up. But nothing is commoner than for caravans short of water to go out of their way in order to reach a wady, where they expect to be able to replenish their water-skins. If they are disappointed, if the wady is dry, they may be brought into great straits, and may even possibly perish. (For a probable instance, where dependence on a wady would, but for a miracle, have led to a great disaster, see <a href="/2_kings/3-9.htm">2 Kings 3:9-20</a>.) <span class="cmt_word">They go to nothing, and perish</span>; rather, <span class="accented">they go up into the waste</span> <span class="accented">and perish.</span> Having vainly sought water in the dry wady, they ascend out of it, and enter the broad waste of the desert, where they too often miserably perish. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/job/6-18.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Caravans</span><br /><span class="heb">אָרְח֣וֹת</span> <span class="translit">(’ā·rə·ḥō·wṯ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - common plural construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_734.htm">Strong's 734: </a> </span><span class="str2">A well-trodden road, a caravan</span><br /><br /><span class="word">turn aside</span><br /><span class="heb">יִ֭לָּ֣פְתוּ</span> <span class="translit">(yil·lā·p̄ə·ṯū)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Nifal - Imperfect - third person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3943.htm">Strong's 3943: </a> </span><span class="str2">To twist, turn, grasp with a twisting motion</span><br /><br /><span class="word">from their routes;</span><br /><span class="heb">דַּרְכָּ֑ם</span> <span class="translit">(dar·kām)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - common singular construct | third person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1870.htm">Strong's 1870: </a> </span><span class="str2">A road, a course of life, mode of action</span><br /><br /><span class="word">they go</span><br /><span class="heb">יַעֲל֖וּ</span> <span class="translit">(ya·‘ă·lū)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5927.htm">Strong's 5927: </a> </span><span class="str2">To ascend, in, actively</span><br /><br /><span class="word">into the wasteland</span><br /><span class="heb">בַתֹּ֣הוּ</span> <span class="translit">(ḇat·tō·hū)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8414.htm">Strong's 8414: </a> </span><span class="str2">A desolation, desert, a worthless thing, in vain</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and perish.</span><br /><span class="heb">וְיֹאבֵֽדוּ׃</span> <span class="translit">(wə·yō·ḇê·ḏū)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive imperfect - third person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6.htm">Strong's 6: </a> </span><span class="str2">To wander away, lose oneself, to perish</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/job/6-18.htm">Job 6:18 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/job/6-18.htm">Job 6:18 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/job/6-18.htm">Job 6:18 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/job/6-18.htm">Job 6:18 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/job/6-18.htm">Job 6:18 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/job/6-18.htm">Job 6:18 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/job/6-18.htm">Job 6:18 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/job/6-18.htm">Job 6:18 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/job/6-18.htm">Job 6:18 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/job/6-18.htm">Job 6:18 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/job/6-18.htm">OT Poetry: Job 6:18 The caravans that travel beside them turn (Jb) </a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/job/6-17.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Job 6:17"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Job 6:17" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/job/6-19.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Job 6:19"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Job 6:19" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
