In an initiative towards sustainable nanotechnology, an oral nano-delivery system has been developed that is made entirely of food-based materials and can also act as a site-specific delivery device depending on the stimulus encountered in different parts of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The delivery system has been fabricated from food grade polysaccharide materials like chitosan and starch through electrospraying technique without the use of any organic solvents. A nutraceutical extracted from an Indian medicinal plant, has been loaded into the nano carrier to test its efficacy in encapsulation and stimuli based release of the active ingredient. The release kinetics of the nutraceutical from the carrier was evaluated in simulated gastric, intestinal and colonic fluid and was found to be triggered both by the enzymes and the pH in each part of the intestinal tract depending on the polysaccharide being used. The toxicity of the nanoparticles on the intestinal epithelial cells was tested and found to be relatively safe for up to 24 hours at a concentration of 0.2 mg/mL with cellular uptake also being observed. The developed nano carrier thus serves as a promising delivery vehicle for targeted delivery to different parts of the GIT with the inherent conditions of the GIT itself acting as the stimulus. In addition, being fabricated from food grade materials, the carrier could be potentially used for the targeted delivery of nutrients through functional foods. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bioavailability" title="bioavailability">bioavailability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=chitosan" title=" chitosan"> chitosan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=delivery%20systems" title=" delivery systems"> delivery systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=encapsulation" title=" encapsulation"> encapsulation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/90354/polysaccharide-based-oral-delivery-systems-for-site-specific-delivery-in-gastro-intestinal-tract" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/90354.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">213</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">31</span> The Impact of Neighbourhood Built-Environment on the Formulation and Facilitation of Bottom-up Mutual Help Networks for Senior Residents in Singapore</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wei%20Zhang">Wei Zhang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chye%20Kiang%20Heng"> Chye Kiang Heng</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=John%20Chye%20Fung"> John Chye Fung</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Background: The world’s demographics is currently undergoing the largest wave of both rapid ageing and dramatic urbanisation in human history. As one of the most rapidly ageing countries, Singapore will see about one in four residents aged 65 years and above by 2030 in its high-rise and high-density urban environment. Research questions: To support urban seniors ageing in place and interdependence among senior residents and their informal caregivers, this study argues a community-based care model with bottom-up mutual help networks and asks how neighbourhood built-environment influences the formulation and facilitation of bottom-up mutual help networks in Singapore. Methods: Two public housing communities with different physical environment and rich age-friendly neighbourhood initiatives were chosen as the case studies. The categories, participants and places of bottom-up mutual help activities will be obtained via field observation, non-structural interviews of participants, service providers and managers of care facilities, and documents. Mapping and content analysis will be used to explore the influences of neighbourhood built-environment on the formulation and facilitation of bottom-up mutual help networks. Results and conclusions: The results showed that neighbourhood design, place programming, and place governance have a confluence on the bottom-up mutual help networks for senior residents. Significance: The outcomes of this study will provide fresh evidence for paradigm shifts of community-based care for the elderly and neighbourhood planning. In addition, the research findings will shed light on meaningful implications of urban planners and policy makers as they tackle with the issues arising from the ageing society. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Built%20environment" title="Built environment">Built environment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mutual%20help" title=" Mutual help"> Mutual help</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Neighbourhood" title=" Neighbourhood"> Neighbourhood</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Senior%20residents" title=" Senior residents"> Senior residents</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Singapore" title=" Singapore"> Singapore</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/120936/the-impact-of-neighbourhood-built-environment-on-the-formulation-and-facilitation-of-bottom-up-mutual-help-networks-for-senior-residents-in-singapore" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/120936.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">137</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">30</span> Innovative Power Engineering in a Selected Rural Commune</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pawel%20Sowa">Pawel Sowa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joachim%20Bargiel"> Joachim Bargiel</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper presents modern solutions of distributed generation in rural communities aiming at the improvement of energy and environmental security, as well as power supply reliability to important customers (e.g. health care, sensitive consumer required continuity). The company, Ng Chye Mong, was set up in 1937 and it went through ups and downs and encountered several failures and successes. In the 1970’s, the management of the company was entrusted to the next generation who continued to manage and expanded the business. In early 2003, the business encountered several challenges. A pair of siblings from the next generation of the Ng family joined the business fulltime and together they set-out to transform the company into FoodXervices Inc. In 2012, they started a charity, Food Bank Singapore Pte Ltd. The authors conducted case study research involving a series of in-depth interviews with the business owner and staff. This case study is an example of how to run a business and coordinate a charity concurrently while mobilising the same resources. The uniqueness of this case is the operational synergy of both the business and charity to promote corporate responsibility causes and initiatives in Singapore. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=family-owned%20business" title="family-owned business">family-owned business</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=charity" title=" charity"> charity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=corporate%20social%20responsibility" title=" corporate social responsibility"> corporate social responsibility</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=branding" title=" branding"> branding</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/44381/foodxervices-inc-corporate-responsibility-and-business-as-usual" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/44381.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">439</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">28</span> Potential Hydrocarbon Degraders Present in Oil from WWII Wrecks in the Pacific</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Awei%20Bainivalu">Awei Bainivalu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joachim%20Larsen"> Joachim Larsen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Logesh%20Panneerselvan"> Logesh Panneerselvan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Toby%20Mills"> Toby Mills</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Brett%20Neilan"> Brett Neilan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Megharaj%20Mallavarapu"> Megharaj Mallavarapu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> World War II (WWII) shipwrecks harbour up to 20 million tonnes of oil. The synthesis comprised of 2 steps: (i) transesterification of palm oil, followed by (ii) polycondensation between the products of transesterification with diacids. The synthesis involves four different formulations to produce plasticisers with different average molecular weight. Chemical structures of the plasticiser were studied using FTIR (Fourier-Transformed Infra-Red) and 1H-NMR (Proton-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance). The molecular weights of these palm oil-based polymers were obtained using GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography). PVC was plasticised with the polymeric plasticisers through solvent casting technique using tetrahydrofuran, THF as the mutual solvent. Some of the tests conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the plasticiser in the PVC film including thermal stability test using thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis to determine the glass transition temperature, Tg, and mechanical test to determine tensile strength, modulus and elongation at break of plasticised PVC using standard test method ASTM D882. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=alkyd" title="alkyd">alkyd</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=palm%20oil" title=" palm oil"> palm oil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=plasticiser" title=" plasticiser"> plasticiser</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pvc" title=" pvc"> pvc</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/32724/environmentally-friendly-palm-oil-based-polymeric-plasticiser-for-poly-vinyl-chloride" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/32724.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">288</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26</span> Investigation of Water Transport Dynamics in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells Based on a Gas Diffusion Media Layers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Saad%20S.%20Alrwashdeh">Saad S. Such analysis suggests that the composer consistently responded to the expressivity and increased formal freedom typical of Tasso's poetry by making greater use of musico-rhetorical figures, as described by the German theorist Joachim Burmeister (1564-1629) in his treatise Musica poetica (1606). The use of rhetorical analysis when examining the influence of the poet Tasso on Monteverdi can illustrate the influence of literary components on music. One cannot overestimate the importance of these texts and their influence on composers of the day. The evidence presented in this paper strongly suggests that exposure to the poems of Torquato Tasso early in his career encouraged Claudio Monteverdi to increasingly adopt a more rhetorical approach in his madrigal compositions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claudio%20Monteverdi" title="Claudio Monteverdi">Claudio Monteverdi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=musico-rhetorical%20analysis" title=" musico-rhetorical analysis"> musico-rhetorical analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=renaissance" title=" renaissance"> renaissance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=torquato%20tasso" title=" torquato tasso"> torquato tasso</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/132780/the-influence-of-torquato-tassos-poetry-on-monteverdis-madrigals" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/132780.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">187</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">24</span> Intelligent Swarm-Finding in Formation Control of Multi-Robots to Track a Moving Target</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anh%20Duc%20Dang">Anh Duc Dang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joachim%20Horn"> Joachim Horn</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper presents a new approach to control robots, which can quickly find their swarm while tracking a moving target through the obstacles of the environment. In this approach, an artificial potential field is generated between each free-robot and the virtual attractive point of the swarm. This artificial potential field will lead free-robots to their swarm. The swarm-finding of these free-robots dose not influence the general motion of their swarm and nor other robots. When one singular robot approaches the swarm then its swarm-search will finish, and it will further participate with its swarm to reach the position of the target. The connections between member-robots with their neighbours are controlled by the artificial attractive/repulsive force field between them to avoid collisions and keep the constant distances between them in ordered formation. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been verified in simulations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=formation%20control" title="formation control">formation control</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=potential%20field%20method" title=" potential field method"> potential field method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=obstacle%20avoidance" title=" obstacle avoidance"> obstacle avoidance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=swarm%20intelligence" title=" swarm intelligence"> swarm intelligence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multi-agent%20systems" title=" multi-agent systems"> multi-agent systems</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/3582/intelligent-swarm-finding-in-formation-control-of-multi-robots-to-track-a-moving-target" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/3582.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">440</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">23</span> Meta-Analysis Comparing the Femoral Tunnel Length, Femoral Tunnel Position and Graft Bending Angle of Transtibial, Anteromedial and Outside-In Techniques for Single-Bundle Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andrew%20Tan%20Hwee%20Chye">Andrew Tan Hwee Chye</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yeo%20Zhen%20Ning"> Yeo Zhen Ning</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study aims to meta-analyse clinical studies comparing femoral tunnel position (FTP), femoral tunnel length (FTL) and graft bending angle (GBA) of single-bundle Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction using Transtibial (TT), Anteromedial (AM) and Outside-in (OI) techniques. A meta-analysis comparing the FTP, FTL and GBA of single-bundle ACL reconstruction utilising the TT, AM and OI was performed. Prospective Comparative Studies (PCS) and Retrospective Comparative Studies (RCS) from PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase were included. A total of 17 studies were included in this study. TT had the longest FTL, when compared to AM (Mean difference = 7.38, 95% CI: 3.76 to 11.00, P < 0.001) and OI (Mean difference = 9.47, 95% CI: 4.89 to 14.05, P < 0.001). In the deep-to-shallow direction, the OI resulted in a significantly deeper femoral tunnel as compared to the TT (Mean difference = 4.36, 95% CI: 1.39 to 7.33, P = 0.004) (Figure 6B). The AM technique also contributed to a significantly lower tunnel position as compared to the OI technique (Mean difference = 2.34, 95% CI: 0.76 to 3.92, P = 0.004). There were no significant differences in the graft bending angle between TT, AM and OI techniques. AM and OI techniques provide a more anatomical position as compared to the TT. Although FTL in the TT is longer than the AM and OI, all three techniques exceed the critical length of 25mm. There are no differences in the GBA between the three techniques. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=femoral%20tunnel%20position" title="femoral tunnel position">femoral tunnel position</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=femoral%20tunnel%20length" title=" femoral tunnel length"> femoral tunnel length</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anterior%20cruciate%20ligament" title=" anterior cruciate ligament"> anterior cruciate ligament</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transtibial" title=" transtibial"> transtibial</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=graft%20bending%20angle" title=" graft bending angle"> graft bending angle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anteromedial" title=" anteromedial"> anteromedial</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=outside-in" title=" outside-in"> outside-in</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154132/meta-analysis-comparing-the-femoral-tunnel-length-femoral-tunnel-position-and-graft-bending-angle-of-transtibial-anteromedial-and-outside-in-techniques-for-single-bundle-anterior-cruciate-ligament-reconstruction" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154132.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">126</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">22</span> Financial Liberalization and Allocation of Bank Credit in Malaysia</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chow%20Fah%20Yee">Chow Fah Yee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eu%20Chye%20Tan"> Eu Chye Tan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The main purpose of developing a modern and sophisticated financial system is to mobilize and allocate the country’s resources for productive uses and in the process contribute to economic growth. Financial liberalization introduced in Malaysia in 1978 was said to be a step towards this goal. According to Mc-Kinnon and Shaw, the deregulation of a country’s financial system will create a more efficient and competitive market driven financial sector; with savings being channelled to the most productive users. This paper aims to assess whether financial liberalization resulted in bank credit being allocated to the more productive users, for the case of Malaysia by: firstly, using Chi-square test to if there exists a relationship between financial liberalization and bank lending in Malaysia. Secondly, to analyze on a comparative basis, the share of loans secured by 9 major economic sectors, using data on bank loans from 1975 to 2003. Lastly, present value analysis and rank correlation was used to determine if the recipients of bigger loans are the more efficient users. Chi-square test confirmed the generally observed trend of an increase in bank credit with the adoption of financial liberalization. While the comparative analysis of loans showed that the bulk of credit were allocated to service sectors, consumer loans and property related sectors, at the expense of industry. Results for rank correlation analysis showed that there is no relationship between the more productive users and amount of loans obtained. This implies that the recipients (sectors) that received more loans were not the more efficient sectors. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=allocation%20of%20resources" title="allocation of resources">allocation of resources</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bank%20credit" title=" bank credit"> bank credit</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=financial%20liberalization" title=" financial liberalization"> financial liberalization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=economics" title=" economics"> economics</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/26029/financial-liberalization-and-allocation-of-bank-credit-in-malaysia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/26029.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">446</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">21</span> On-Farm Diversification in Vietnam: Determinants and Trends</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Diep%20Thanh%20Tung">Diep Thanh Tung</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joachim%20Aurbacher"> Joachim Aurbacher</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study aims to measure the level of on-farm diversification in Vietnam. The empirical results of the research carried out reflect regional differences in terms of on-farm diversification and its determinants. Households in the northern regions have adapted to the fragmented and small-sized parcels of land held by diversifying their on-farm activities. In contrast, the Mekong delta region in the south of Vietnam is characterized by larger agricultural parcels and a specialization in rice production. Land use fragmentation, as reflected by a large number of plots in a given area, is one of the most important reasons for the high levels of on-farm diversification seen, while the higher share of non-farm income in total income is the reason of lower levels of on-farm diversification. Households have reacted to natural and economic shocks by diversifying their on-farm activities. The non-stationary Markov chain model used here shows various diversification scenarios and trends. In most cases, on-farm diversification generally tends to reduce over the next few years. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diversification" title="diversification">diversification</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=simpson%20index" title=" simpson index"> simpson index</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fixed%20effects" title=" fixed effects"> fixed effects</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non-stationary%20markov%20chain" title=" non-stationary markov chain"> non-stationary markov chain</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22799/on-farm-diversification-in-vietnam-determinants-and-trends" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22799.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">485</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">20</span> Technical and Economic Environment in the Polish Power System as the Basis for Distributed Generation and Renewable Energy Sources Development</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pawel%20Sowa">Pawel Sowa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joachim%20Bargiel"> Joachim Bargiel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bogdan%20Mol"> Bogdan Mol</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katarzyna%20Luszcz"> Katarzyna Luszcz</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The article raises the issue of the development of local renewable energy sources and the production of distributed energy in context of improving the reliability of the Polish Power System and the beneficial impact on local and national energy security. There is an urgent need to educate farmers and fishermen in rural areas in Nigeria on climate change adaptation and mitigation for sustainable development. Through our literature and participant observation, it has been discovered that many farmers and fishermen in rural areas in Nigeria have little or no knowledge about climate change adaptation and mitigation. This paper seeks to draw the attention of policy makers in government, private sectors, non-governmental organizations and interested individuals to the need to seek for innovative ways of educating farmers and fishermen in rural areas about climate change adaptation and mitigation for global sustainability. This study also explores the effective methods of bridging the communication gaps through efficient information dissemination, intensive awareness outreach, use of climate change poems and blogs, innovative loan scheme to farmers and fishermen, etc. to help ensure that farmers and fishermen in rural areas in Nigeria are adequately educated about climate change adaptation and mitigation for global sustainability. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=agriculture" title="agriculture">agriculture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate%20change" title=" climate change"> climate change</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=farmers" title=" farmers"> farmers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fishermen" title=" fishermen"> fishermen</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/87653/educating-farmers-and-fishermen-in-rural-areas-in-nigeria-on-climate-change-mitigation-and-adaptation-for-global-sustainability" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/87653.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">245</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">18</span> Real-Time Network Anomaly Detection Systems Based on Machine-Learning Algorithms</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zahra%20Ramezanpanah">Zahra Ramezanpanah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joachim%20Carvallo"> Joachim Carvallo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aurelien%20Rodriguez"> Aurelien Rodriguez</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper aims to detect anomalies in streaming data using machine learning algorithms. In this regard, we designed two separate pipelines and evaluated the effectiveness of each separately. The first pipeline, based on supervised machine learning methods, consists of two phases. In the first phase, we trained several supervised models using the UNSW-NB15 data-set. We measured the efficiency of each using different performance metrics and selected the best model for the second phase. At the beginning of the second phase, we first, using Argus Server, sniffed a local area network. Several types of attacks were simulated and then sent the sniffed data to a running algorithm at short intervals. This algorithm can display the results of each packet of received data in real-time using the trained model. The second pipeline presented in this paper is based on unsupervised algorithms, in which a Temporal Graph Network (TGN) is used to monitor a local network. The TGN is trained to predict the probability of future states of the network based on its past behavior. Our contribution in this section is introducing an indicator to identify anomalies from these predicted probabilities. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=temporal%20graph%20network" title="temporal graph network">temporal graph network</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anomaly%20detection" title=" anomaly detection"> anomaly detection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cyber%20security" title=" cyber security"> cyber security</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=IDS" title=" IDS"> IDS</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/150847/real-time-network-anomaly-detection-systems-based-on-machine-learning-algorithms" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/150847.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">103</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">17</span> Governing Urban Water Infrasystems: A Case Study of Los Angeles in the Context of Global Frameworks</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joachim%20Monkelbaan">Joachim Monkelbaan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marcia%20Hale"> Marcia Hale</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Now that global frameworks for sustainability governance (e.g. the Sustainable Development Goals, Paris Climate Agreement and Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction) are in place, the question is how these aspirations that represent major transitions can be put into practice. Water ‘infrasystems’ can play an especially significant role in strengthening regional sustainability. Infrasystems include both hard and soft infrastructure, such as pipes and technology for delivering water, as well as the institutions and governance models that direct its delivery. As such, an integrated infrasystems view is crucial for Integrative Water Management (IWM). Due to frequently contested ownership of and responsibility for water resources, these infrasystems can also play an important role in facilitating conflict and catalysing community empowerment, especially through participatory approaches to governance. In this paper, we analyze the water infrasystem of the Los Angeles region through the lens of global frameworks for sustainability governance. By complementing a solid overview of governance theories with empirical data from interviews with water actors in the LA metropolitan region (including NGOs, water managers, scientists and elected officials), this paper elucidates ways for this infrasystem to be better aligned with global sustainability frameworks. In addition, it opens up the opportunity to scrutinize the appropriateness of global frameworks when it comes to fostering sustainability action at the local level. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=governance" title="governance">governance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transitions" title=" transitions"> transitions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=global%20frameworks" title=" global frameworks"> global frameworks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=infrasystems" title=" infrasystems"> infrasystems</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48236/governing-urban-water-infrasystems-a-case-study-of-los-angeles-in-the-context-of-global-frameworks" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48236.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">245</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">16</span> Experimental Evaluation of Stand Alone Solar Driven Membrane Distillation System</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mejbri%20Sami">Mejbri Sami</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zhani%20Khalifa"> Zhani Khalifa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zarzoum%20Kamel"> Zarzoum Kamel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ben%20Bacha%20Habib"> Ben Bacha Habib</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Koschikowski%20Joachim"> Koschikowski Joachim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pfeifle%20Daniel"> Pfeifle Daniel</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Many places worldwide, especially arid and semi-arid remote regions, are suffering from the lack of drinkable water and the situation will be aggravated in the near future. Furthermore, remote areas are characterised by lack of conventional energy sources, skilled personnel and maintenance facilities. Therefore, the development of small to medium size, stand-alone and robust solar desalination systems is needed to provide independent fresh water supply in remote areas. This paper is focused on experimental studies on compact membrane distillation (MD) solar desalination prototype located at the Mechanical Engineering Department site, Kairouan University, Kairouan, Tunisia. The pilot system is designed and manufactured as a part of a research and development project funded by the MESRS/BMBF. The pilot system is totally autonomous. The electrical energy required to operate the unit is generated through a field of 4 m² of photovoltaic panels, and the heating of feed water is provided by a field of 6 m² of solar collectors. The Kairouan plant performance of the first few months of operation is presented. The highest freshwater production of 150 L/d is obtained on a sunny day in July of 633 W/m²d. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=experimental" title="experimental">experimental</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=membrane%20distillation" title=" membrane distillation"> membrane distillation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=solar%20desalination" title=" solar desalination"> solar desalination</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Permeat%20gap" title=" Permeat gap"> Permeat gap</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/105241/experimental-evaluation-of-stand-alone-solar-driven-membrane-distillation-system" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/105241.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">136</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">15</span> The Effect of Primary Treatment on Histopathological Patterns and Choice of Neck Dissection in Regional Failure of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Patients</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ralene%20Sim">Ralene Sim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stefan%20Mueller"> Stefan Mueller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=N.%20Gopalakrishna%20Iyer"> N. Radical neck dissection (RND) is preferred over modified radical neck dissection (MRND) since it is traditionally believed to offer better long-term disease control. However, with the advent of more advanced imaging modalities like high-resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Computed Tomography, and Positron Emission Tomography-CT scans, earlier detection is achieved. Additionally, concurrent chemotherapy also contributes to reduced tumour burden. Hence, there may be a lesser need for an RND and a greater role for MRND. With this retrospective study, the primary aim is to ascertain whether MRND, as opposed to RND, has similar outcomes and hence, whether there would be more grounds to offer a less aggressive procedure to achieve lower patient morbidity. Methods: This is a retrospective study of 66 NPC patients treated at Singapore General Hospital between 1994 to 2016 for histologically proven regional recurrence, of which 41 patients underwent RND and 25 who underwent MRND, based on surgeon preference. The type of ND performed, primary treatment mode, adjuvant treatment, and pattern of recurrence were reviewed. Overall survival (OS) was calculated using Kaplan-Meier estimate and compared. Results: Overall, the disease parameters such as nodal involvement and extranodal extension were comparable between the two groups. Comparing MRND and RND, the median (IQR) OS is 1.76 (0.58 to 3.49) and 2.41 (0.78 to 4.11) respectively. However, the p-value found is 0.5301 and hence not statistically significant. Conclusion: RND is more aggressive and has been associated with greater morbidity. Hence, with similar outcomes, MRND could be an alternative salvage procedure for regional failure in selected NPC patients, allowing similar salvage rates with lesser mortality and morbidity. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nasopharyngeal%20carcinoma" title="nasopharyngeal carcinoma">nasopharyngeal carcinoma</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=neck%20dissection" title=" neck dissection"> neck dissection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=modified%20neck%20dissection" title=" modified neck dissection"> modified neck dissection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radical%20neck%20dissection" title=" radical neck dissection"> radical neck dissection</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/90795/the-effect-of-primary-treatment-on-histopathological-patterns-and-choice-of-neck-dissection-in-regional-failure-of-nasopharyngeal-carcinoma-patients" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/90795.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">170</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">14</span> Housing Delivery in Nigeria’s Urban Areas: The Plight of the Poor in Owerri, Capital of Imo State, Nigeria</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joachim%20Onyike">Joachim Onyike</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The Federal Government of Nigeria in 2012 came up with a new National Housing Policy; one of its major objectives was to make housing affordable to the poor. Six years down the line, this study was carried out to find out whether the poor have fared better under the new housing policy. Owerri, the capital of Imo State, was adopted as a case study to mirror the situation nationwide. The study population was made up of low-income civil servants, i.e., grade levels 1–6 in the Imo State Civil Service. The study looked at household size, household income, rental levels, house prices, costs of major building materials, land values, land tenure, the interest rate on mortgages, inflation rate, and the status of government interventions, owing to their obvious effect on housing affordability by the low-income earners. The study made use of physical observations, questionnaires, and interviews as well as library studies to elicit relevant information. Housing affordability by the subject population did not improve. It rather dropped. The study came to the conclusion that in spite of the new National Housing Policy, housing affordability by the low-income earners has not improved. The policy as it affects the poor has not been duly implemented by both Federal and State Governments. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=house%20prices" title="house prices">house prices</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=housing%20affordability" title=" housing affordability"> housing affordability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=housing%20policy" title=" housing policy"> housing policy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=land%20values" title=" land values"> land values</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=low-income%20earners" title=" low-income earners"> low-income earners</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113690/housing-delivery-in-nigerias-urban-areas-the-plight-of-the-poor-in-owerri-capital-of-imo-state-nigeria" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113690.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">200</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13</span> Dead Bodies that Matter: A Consensual Qualitative Research on the Lived Experience of Embalmers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mark%20N.%20Abello">Mark N. These professionals are competent in physiology, chemicals, and cosmetics. Another is that such professionals face cadavers day-to-day. Given this background, the researchers intended to find out the lived experience of embalmers. The purpose of the present study is to discover the essence of the work of these professionals, to determine factors that influence their work, the depths of their life and on how the occupation affects upon physical, emotional-mental, spiritual, moral and social aspects. The researchers used the Consensual Qualitative Research, and eight embalmers, seven male and one female, from Manila and Bulacan were interviewed using open-ended questions and were used to triangulate the results. A primary research team conducted the consensus of domains, and an external auditor reviewed the results. A personal data sheet was also used, this helped the researchers group the respondents according to demographic profile. The results of the consensual qualitative research investigation revealed the four core components of the lived experience of embalmers which are motivation, struggles, acceptance, and contentment. The results revealed core components that play an important role in their everyday lives as an embalmer, daily hardships, and source of their pleasures. The present study will help future researchers, embalmers, and society. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=embalmers" title="embalmers">embalmers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=consensual%20qualitative%20research" title=" consensual qualitative research"> consensual qualitative research</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lived%20experience" title=" lived experience"> lived experience</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=embalming" title=" embalming"> embalming</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/91920/dead-bodies-that-matter-a-consensual-qualitative-research-on-the-lived-experience-of-embalmers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/91920.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">167</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12</span> Single Atom Manipulation with 4 Scanning Tunneling Microscope Technique</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jianshu%20Yang">Jianshu Yang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Delphine%20Sordes"> Delphine Sordes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marek%20Kolmer"> Marek Kolmer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Christian%20Joachim"> Christian Joachim</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Nanoelectronics, for example the calculating circuits integrating at molecule scale logic gates, atomic scale circuits, has been constructed and investigated recently. A major challenge is their functional properties characterization because of the connecting problem from atomic scale to micrometer scale. New experimental instruments and new processes have been proposed therefore. To satisfy a precisely measurement at atomic scale and then connecting micrometer scale electrical integration controller, the technique improvement is kept on going. Our new machine, a low temperature high vacuum four scanning tunneling microscope, as a customer required instrument constructed by Omicron GmbH, is expected to be scaling down to atomic scale characterization. Here, we will present our first testified results about the performance of this new instrument. The sample we selected is Au(111) surface. The measurements have been taken at 4.2 K. The atomic resolution surface structure was observed with each of four scanners with noise level better than 3 pm. With a tip-sample distance calibration by I-z spectra, the sample conductance has been derived from its atomic locally I-V spectra. Furthermore, the surface conductance measurement has been performed using two methods, (1) by landing two STM tips on the surface with sample floating; and (2) by sample floating and one of the landed tips turned to be grounding. In addition, single atom manipulation has been achieved with a modified tip design, which is comparable to a conventional LT-STM. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=low%20temperature%20ultra-high%20vacuum%20four%20scanning%20tunneling%20microscope" title="low temperature ultra-high vacuum four scanning tunneling microscope">low temperature ultra-high vacuum four scanning tunneling microscope</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nanoelectronics" title=" nanoelectronics"> nanoelectronics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=point%20contact" title=" point contact"> point contact</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=single%20atom%20manipulation" title=" single atom manipulation"> single atom manipulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tunneling%20resistance" title=" tunneling resistance"> tunneling resistance</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/31668/single-atom-manipulation-with-4-scanning-tunneling-microscope-technique" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/31668.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">280</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11</span> Patient Support Program in Pharmacovigilance: Foster Patient Confidence and Compliance</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Atul%20Khurana">Atul Khurana</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rajul%20Rastogi"> Rajul Rastogi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hans-Joachim%20Gamperl"> Hans-Joachim Gamperl</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The pharmaceutical companies are getting more inclined towards patient support programs (PSPs) which assist patients and/or healthcare professionals (HCPs) in more desirable disease management and cost-effective treatment. The utmost objective of these programs is patient care. The PSPs may include financial assistance to patients, medicine compliance programs, access to HCPs via phone or online chat centers, etc. The PSP has a crucial role in terms of customer acquisition and retention strategies. During the conduct of these programs, Marketing Authorisation Holder (MAH) may receive information related to concerned medicinal products, which is usually reported by patients or involved HCPs. This information may include suspected adverse reaction(s) during/after administration of medicinal products. Hence, the MAH should design PSP to comply with regulatory reporting requirements and avoid non-compliance during PV inspection. The emergence of wireless health devices is lowering the burden on patients to manually incorporate safety data, and building a significant option for patients to observe major swings in reference to drug safety. Therefore, to enhance the adoption of these programs, MAH not only needs to aware patients about advantages of the program, but also recognizes the importance of time of patients and commitments made in a constructive manner. It is indispensable that strengthening the public health is considered as the topmost priority in such programs, and the MAH is compliant to Pharmacovigilance (PV) requirements along with regulatory obligations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=drug%20safety" title="drug safety">drug safety</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=good%20pharmacovigilance%20practice" title=" good pharmacovigilance practice"> good pharmacovigilance practice</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=patient%20support%20program" title=" patient support program"> patient support program</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pharmacovigilance" title=" pharmacovigilance"> pharmacovigilance</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/66281/patient-support-program-in-pharmacovigilance-foster-patient-confidence-and-compliance" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/66281.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">313</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">10</span> Assessment of Selected Marine Organisms from Malaysian Coastal Areas for Inhibitory Activity against the Chikungunya Virus</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yik%20Sin%20Chan">Yik Sin Chan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nam%20Weng%20Sit"> Nam Weng Sit</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fook%20Yee%20Chye"> Fook Yee Chye</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=van%20Ofwegen%20Leen"> van Ofwegen Leen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=de%20Voogd%20Nicole"> de Voogd Nicole</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kong%20Soo%20Khoo"> Kong Soo Khoo</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Chikungunya fever is an arboviral disease transmitted by the Aedes mosquitoes. It has resulted in epidemics of the disease in tropical countries in the Indian Ocean and South East Asian regions. The recent spread of this disease to the temperate countries such as France and Italy, coupled with the absence of vaccines and effective antiviral drugs make chikungunya fever a worldwide health threat. This study aims to investigate the anti-chikungunya virus activity of selected marine organism samples collected from Malaysian coastal areas, including seaweeds (Caulerpa racemosa, Caulerpa sertularioides and Kappaphycus alvarezii), a soft coral (Lobophytum microlobulatum) and a sponge (Spheciospongia vagabunda). Following lyophilization (oven drying at 40C for K. alvarezii) and grinding to powder form, each sample was subjected to sequential solvent extraction using hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol, methanol and distilled water in order to extract bioactive compounds. The antiviral activity was evaluated using monkey kidney epithelial (Vero) cells infected with the virus (multiplicity of infection=1). The cell viability was determined by Neutral Red uptake assay. 70% of the 30 extracts showed weak inhibitory activity with cell viability ≤30%. Seven of the extracts exhibited moderate inhibitory activity (cell viability: 31%-69%). These were the chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol and methanol extracts of C. racemosa; chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of L. microlobulatum; and the chloroform extract of C. sertularioides. Only the hexane and ethanol extracts of L. microlobulatum showed strong inhibitory activity against the virus, resulting in cell viabilities (mean±SD; n=3) of 73.3±2.6% and 79.2±0.9%, respectively. The corresponding mean 50% effective concentrations (EC50) for the extracts were 14.2±0.2 and 115.3±1.2 µg/mL, respectively. The ethanol extract of the soft coral L. microlobulatum appears to hold the most promise for further characterization of active principles as it possessed greater selectivity index (SI>5.6) compared to the hexane extract (SI=2.1). <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=antiviral" title="antiviral">antiviral</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seaweed" title=" seaweed"> seaweed</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sponge" title=" sponge"> sponge</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soft%20coral" title=" soft coral"> soft coral</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vero%20cell" title=" vero cell"> vero cell</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/13323/assessment-of-selected-marine-organisms-from-malaysian-coastal-areas-for-inhibitory-activity-against-the-chikungunya-virus" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/13323.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">289</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">9</span> A Comparative Analysis of the Performance of COSMO and WRF Models in Quantitative Rainfall Prediction</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Isaac%20Mugume">Isaac Mugume</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Charles%20Basalirwa"> Charles Basalirwa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Daniel%20Waiswa"> Daniel Waiswa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mary%20Nsabagwa"> Mary Nsabagwa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Triphonia%20Jacob%20Ngailo"> Triphonia Jacob Ngailo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joachim%20Reuder"> Joachim Reuder</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sch%C2%A8attler%20Ulrich"> Sch¨attler Ulrich</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Musa%20Semujju"> Musa Semujju</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The Numerical weather prediction (NWP) models are considered powerful tools for guiding quantitative rainfall prediction. A couple of NWP models exist and are used at many operational weather prediction centers. This study considers two models namely the Consortium for Small–scale Modeling (COSMO) model and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. It compares the models’ ability to predict rainfall over Uganda for the period 21st April 2013 to 10th May 2013 using the root mean square (RMSE) and the mean error (ME). In comparing the performance of the models, this study assesses their ability to predict light rainfall events and extreme rainfall events. All the experiments used the default parameterization configurations and with same horizontal resolution (7 Km). The results show that COSMO model had a tendency of largely predicting no rain which explained its under–prediction. The COSMO model (RMSE: 14.16; ME: -5.91) presented a significantly (p = 0.014) higher magnitude of error compared to the WRF model (RMSE: 11.86; ME: -1.09). However the COSMO model (RMSE: 3.85; ME: 1.39) performed significantly (p = 0.003) better than the WRF model (RMSE: 8.14; ME: 5.30) in simulating light rainfall events. All the models under–predicted extreme rainfall events with the COSMO model (RMSE: 43.63; ME: -39.58) presenting significantly higher error magnitudes than the WRF model (RMSE: 35.14; ME: -26.95). This study recommends additional diagnosis of the models’ treatment of deep convection over the tropics. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=comparative%20performance" title="comparative performance">comparative performance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=the%20COSMO%20model" title=" the COSMO model"> the COSMO model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=the%20WRF%20model" title=" the WRF model"> the WRF model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=light%20rainfall%20events" title=" light rainfall events"> light rainfall events</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=extreme%20rainfall%20events" title=" extreme rainfall events"> extreme rainfall events</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/88050/a-comparative-analysis-of-the-performance-of-cosmo-and-wrf-models-in-quantitative-rainfall-prediction" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/88050.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">261</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">8</span> Expression Profiling and Immunohistochemical Analysis of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Head and Neck (Tumor, Transition Zone, Normal) by Whole Genome Scale Sequencing</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Veronika%20Zivicova">Veronika Zivicova</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Petr%20Broz"> Petr Broz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zdenek%20Fik"> Zdenek Fik</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alzbeta%20Mifkova"> Alzbeta Mifkova</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jan%20Plzak"> Jan Plzak</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zdenek%20Cada"> Zdenek Cada</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Herbert%20Kaltner"> Herbert Kaltner</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jana%20Fialova%20Kucerova"> Jana Fialova Kucerova</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hans-Joachim%20%20Gabius"> Hans-Joachim Gabius</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Karel%20Smetana%20Jr."> Karel Smetana Jr. </a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The possibility to determine genome-wide expression profiles of cells and tissues opens a new level of analysis in the quest to define dysregulation in malignancy and thus identify new tumor markers. Toward this long-term aim, we here address two issues on this level for head and neck cancer specimen: i) defining profiles in different regions, i.e. the tumor, the transition zone and normal control and ii) comparing complete data sets for seven individual patients. Special focus in the flanking immunohistochemical part is given to adhesion/growth-regulatory galectins that upregulate chemo- and cytokine expression in an NF-κB-dependent manner, to these regulators and to markers of differentiation, i.e. keratins. The detailed listing of up- and down-regulations, also available in printed form (1), not only served to unveil new candidates for testing as marker but also let the impact of the tumor in the transition zone become apparent. The extent of interindividual variation raises a strong cautionary note on assuming uniformity of regulatory events, to be noted when considering therapeutic implications. Thus, a combination of test targets (and a network analysis for galectins and their downstream effectors) is (are) advised prior to reaching conclusions on further perspectives. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=galectins" title="galectins">galectins</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=genome%20scale%20sequencing" title=" genome scale sequencing"> genome scale sequencing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=squamous%20cell%20carcinoma" title=" squamous cell carcinoma"> squamous cell carcinoma</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transition%20zone" title=" transition zone"> transition zone</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75823/expression-profiling-and-immunohistochemical-analysis-of-squamous-cell-carcinoma-of-head-and-neck-tumor-transition-zone-normal-by-whole-genome-scale-sequencing" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75823.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">239</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">7</span> Influence of Low and Extreme Heat Fluxes on Thermal Degradation of Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Polymers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Bibinger">Johannes Bibinger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sebastian%20Eibl"> Sebastian Eibl</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hans-Joachim%20Gudladt"> Hans-Joachim Gudladt</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study considers the influence of different irradiation scenarios on the thermal degradation of carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP). Real threats are simulated, such as fires with long-lasting low heat fluxes and nuclear heat flashes with short-lasting high heat fluxes. For this purpose, coated and uncoated quasi-isotropic samples of the commercially available CFRP HexPly® 8552/IM7 are thermally irradiated from one side by a cone calorimeter and a xenon short-arc lamp with heat fluxes between 5 and 175 W/cm² at varying time intervals. The specimen temperature is recorded on the front and backside as well as at different laminate depths. The CFRP is non-destructively tested with ultrasonic testing, infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and micro-focused computed X-Ray tomography (μCT). Destructive tests are performed to evaluate the mechanical properties in terms of interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), compressive and tensile strength. The irradiation scenarios vary significantly in heat flux and exposure time. Thus, different heating rates, radiation effects, and temperature distributions occur. This leads to unequal decomposition processes, which affect the sensitivity of the strength type and damage behaviour of the specimens. However, with the use of surface coatings, thermal degradation of composite materials can be delayed. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CFRP" title="CFRP">CFRP</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=one-sided%20thermal%20damage" title=" one-sided thermal damage"> one-sided thermal damage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=high%20heat%20flux" title=" high heat flux"> high heat flux</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heating%20rate" title=" heating rate"> heating rate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non-destructive%20and%20destructive%20testing" title=" non-destructive and destructive testing"> non-destructive and destructive testing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/134738/influence-of-low-and-extreme-heat-fluxes-on-thermal-degradation-of-carbon-fibre-reinforced-polymers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/134738.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">112</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> Products in Early Development Phases: Ecological Classification and Evaluation Using an Interval Arithmetic Based Calculation Approach</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Helen%20L.%20Hein">Helen L. The ecological performance of products can be scientifically conducted with life cycle assessments. In the construction sector, significant amounts of CO2 emissions are assigned to the energy used for building heating purposes. Therefore, sustainable construction materials for insulating purposes are substantial, whereby aerogels have been explored intensively in the last years due to their low thermal conductivity. Therefore, the WALL-ACE project aims to develop an aerogel-based thermal insulating plaster that would achieve minor thermal conductivities. But as in the early stage of development phases, a lot of information is still missing or not yet accessible, the ecological performance of innovative products bases increasingly on uncertain data that can lead to significant deviations in the results. To be able to predict realistically how meaningful the results are and how viable the developed products may be with regard to their corresponding respective market, these deviations however have to be considered. Therefore, a classification method is presented in this study, which may allow comparing the ecological performance of modern products with already established and competitive materials. In order to achieve this, an alternative calculation method was used that allows computing with lower and upper bounds to consider all possible values without precise data. The life cycle analysis of the considered products was conducted with an interval arithmetic based calculation method. The results lead to the conclusion that the interval solutions describing the possible environmental impacts are so wide that the result usability is limited. Nevertheless, a further optimization in reducing environmental impacts of aerogels seems to be needed to become more competitive in the future. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aerogel-based" title="aerogel-based">aerogel-based</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=insulating%20material" title=" insulating material"> insulating material</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=early%20development%20phase" title=" early development phase"> early development phase</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=interval%20arithmetic" title=" interval arithmetic"> interval arithmetic</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/102735/products-in-early-development-phases-ecological-classification-and-evaluation-using-an-interval-arithmetic-based-calculation-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/102735.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">143</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5</span> A Comparative Study of Euglena gracilis Cultivations for Improving Laminaribiose Phosphorylase Production</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Akram%20Abi">Akram Abi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Clarissa%20M%C3%BCller"> Clarissa Müller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hans-Joachim%20J%C3%B6rdening"> Hans-Joachim Jördening</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Laminaribiose is a beta-1,3-glycoside which is used in the medical field for the treatment of dermatitis and also can be used as a building block for new pharmaceutics. The conventional process of laminaribiose production is the uneconomical process of hydrolysis of laminarin extracted from natural polysaccharides of plant origin. A more economical approach however is attainable by enzymatically synthesis of laminaribiose via a reverse phosphorylase reaction catalyzed by laminaribiose phosphorylase (LP) from Euglena gracilis. Different cultivation methods of Euglena gracilis and the effect on LP production have been investigated. Buffered/unbuffered heterotrophic and mixotrophic cultivations of Euglena gracilis has been carried out. Changes of biomass and LP production, glucose level and pH, cell count and shape has been monitored in the course of time. The results obtained from experiments each in three repetitions, show that in the heterotrophic cultivation of Euglena gracilis not only more biomass is produced compared to mixotrophic cultivation, but also higher specific protein concentration is achieved. Furthermore, the LP activity test showed that the protein extracted from heterotrophically cultured cells has a higher LP activity. It was also observed that the cells develop in a distinctive different shape between these two cultures and have different length to width ratios. Taking the heterotrophic culture as the more efficient cultivation method in LP production, another comparative experiment between buffered and unbuffered heterothrophic culture was carried out that showed the unbuffered culture has advantages over the other one in respect of both LP production and resulting activity. A hetrotrophic cultivation of Euglena gracilis in a 5L bioreactor with controlled operating conditions showed a distinctive improvement of all the aspects of culture compared to the shaking flask cultivations. Biomass production was improved from 5 to more than 8 g/l (dry weight) which resulted in a specific protein concentration of 45 g/l in the heterotrophic cultivation in the bioreactor. In further attempts to improve LP production, different purification methods were tested and each method was checks through an activity assay. A laminaribiose yield of 35% was achieved which was by far the highest amount amongst different methods tested. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=euglena%20gracilis" title="euglena gracilis">euglena gracilis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heterotrophic%20culture" title=" heterotrophic culture"> heterotrophic culture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=laminaribiose%20production" title=" laminaribiose production"> laminaribiose production</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mixotrophic%20culture" title=" mixotrophic culture"> mixotrophic culture</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/36726/a-comparative-study-of-euglena-gracilis-cultivations-for-improving-laminaribiose-phosphorylase-production" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/36726.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">365</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4</span> Modulation of the Innate Immune Response in Bovine Udder Tissue by Epigenetic Modifiers </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Holm%20Zerbe">Holm Zerbe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Macias"> Laura Macias</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hans-Joachim%20Schuberth"> Hans-Joachim Schuberth</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wolfram%20Petzl"> Wolfram Petzl</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Mastitis is among the most important production diseases in cows. It accounts for large parts of antimicrobial drug use in the dairy industry worldwide. Due to the imminent normative to reduce the use of antimicrobial drugs in livestock, new ways for therapy and prophylaxis of mastitis are needed. Recently epigenetic regulation of inflammation by chromatin modifications has increasingly drawn attention. Currently, some epigenetic modifiers have already been approved for the use in humans, however little is known about their actions in the bovine system. The aim of our study was to investigate whether three selected epigenetic modifiers (Vitamin D3, SAHA and S2101) influence the initial immune response towards mastitis pathogens in bovine udder tissue in vitro. Tissue explants of the teat cistern and udder parenchyma were collected from 21 cows and were incubated for 36 hours in the absence and presence of epigenetic modifiers. Additionally, the tissue was stimulated with heat-inactivated particles of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, which are regarded as two of the most important mastitis pathogens. After incubation, the explants were tested by RT-qPCR for transcript abundances of immune-related candidate genes. Gene expression was validated in culture supernatants by an AlphaLISA assay. Furthermore, the culture supernatants were analyzed for their chemotactic capacity through a chemotaxis assay. Statistical analysis of data was performed with the program ‘R’ version 3.2.3. Vitamin D3 had no effect on the immune response of udder tissue in vitro after stimulation with mastitis pathogens. The epigenetic modifiers SAHA and S2101 however significantly blocked the pathogen-induced upregulation of CXCL8, TNFα, S100A9 and LAP (P < 0.05). The regulation of IL10 was not affected by treatment with SAHA and S2101. Transcript abundances for CXCL8 were reflected by IL8 contents and chemotactic activity in culture supernatants. In conclusion, these data show the potential of epigenetic modifiers (SAHA and S2101) to block overshooting inflammation in the udder. Thus epigenetic modifiers may serve in future as immune modulators for the treatment and/or prophylaxis of clinical mastitis. Sartor</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> According to German guidelines, external natural catchments are greater sub-catchments without significant portions of impervious areas, which possess a surface drainage system and empty in a sewer network. Basically, such catchments should be disconnected from sewer networks, particularly from combined systems. If this is not possible due to local conditions, their flow hydrographs have to be considered at the design of sewer systems, because the impact may be significant. Since there is a lack of sufficient measurements of storm-runoff events for such catchments and hence verified simulation methods to analyze their design flows, German standards give only general advices and demands special considerations in such cases. Compared to urban sub-catchments, external natural catchments exhibit greatly different flow characteristics. With increasing area size their hydrological behavior approximates that of rural catchments, e.g. sub-surface flow may prevail and lag times are comparable long. There are few observed peak flow values and simple (mostly empirical) approaches that are offered by literature for Central Europe. Most of them are at least helpful to crosscheck results that are achieved by simulation lacking calibration. Using storm-runoff data from five monitored rural watersheds in the west of Germany with catchment areas between 0.33 and 1.07 km2 , the author investigated by multiple event simulation three different approaches to determine the rainfall excess. These are the modified SCS variable run-off coefficient methods by Lutz and Zaiß as well as the soil moisture model by Ostrowski. Selection criteria for storm events from continuous precipitation data were taken from recommendations of M 165 and the runoff concentration method (parallel cascades of linear reservoirs) from a DWA working report to which the author had contributed. In general, the two run-off coefficient methods showed results that are of sufficient accuracy for most practical purposes. The soil moisture model showed no significant better results, at least not to such a degree that it would justify the additional data collection that its parameter determination requires. Particularly typical convective summer events after long dry periods, that are often decisive for sewer networks (not so much for rivers), showed discrepancies between simulated and measured flow hydrographs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=external%20natural%20catchments" title="external natural catchments">external
