Landet best氓r av omkring 607 sm氓枚ar f枚rdelade p氓 fyra autonoma stater som heter Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei och Kosrae. Landytan 盲r liten men landet 盲r utspritt 枚ver ett omr氓de p氓 mer 盲n 2,6 miljoner kvadratkilometer av Stilla Havet, motsvarande omkring 6 g氓nger Sveriges yta. Huvudstaden Palikir och den st枚rsta staden Kolonia 盲r b盲gge bel盲gna i Pohnpei.</p> <p><strong>Historia</strong><br/> De mikronesiska f枚rf盲derna bosatte sig p氓枚arna tillh枚rande landet omkring 3000-2000 f.Kr. och allteftersom tiden gick utvecklades ett decentraliserat h枚vdingsystem till ett mer centraliserat rike med ett politiskt och religi枚st centrum p氓 Yap. Detta rike varade fr氓n omkring 500-1500 d氓 systemet kollapsade.</p> <p>Portugisiska och spanska uppt盲cktsresande kom till Caroline枚arna p氓 1500-talet och spanjorerna kom att etablera sig som herrar 枚ver 枚arna. 1899 s氓ldes de sedan till Tyskland vilka i sin tur besegrades av Japan under f枚rsta v盲rldskriget 1914. Under andra v盲rldskriget besegrades japanerna av amerikanska styrkor vilka 1947 gjorde 枚arna till en del av Stillahavsprotektoratet.</p> <p>1979 fick fyra av distrikten inom protektoratet samman och blev s氓ledes Mikronesiska federationen. Palau, Marshall枚arna och Nordmarianerna valde att inte ansluta sig till dessa fyra. Den nya nationen skrev 1986 under p氓 att bli en sj盲lvst盲ndig stat i fri association med USA, ett avtal som f枚rnyades 2004.</p> <p><strong>Statsskick</strong><br/> Mikronesiska federationen styrs enligt en konstitution fr氓n 1979. I kongressen sitter fjorton senatorer som v盲ljs av folket. Fyra av dessa v盲ljs p氓 fyra 氓r och representerar en delstat vardera. 脰vriga tio v盲ljs p氓 tv氓氓r i distrikt baserade p氓 befolkning.
