And the Twelve <i>were</i> with Him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>and certain women who had been cured from evil spirits and infirmities: Mary who is called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>and Joanna wife of Chuza, a steward of Herod, and Susanna, and many others, who were ministering to them<span class="fn"><a href="#fna" title="TR ‘to Him’">a</a></span> out of their own means. </p><p class="hdg">The Parable of the Sower<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 13:1-9; Mark 4:1-9)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And <i>as</i> a great crowd is assembling, and those from each town are coming to Him, He spoke by a parable: <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span><span class="red">“The <i>one</i> sowing went out to sow his seed. And in his sowing, some indeed fell along the road, and it was trampled upon, and the birds of the air devoured it. </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And other fell upon the rock, and having sprung up it withered through having no moisture. </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And other fell in <i>the</i> midst of the thorns, and the thorns having sprung up with <i>it</i>, choked it. </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And other fell upon the good soil, and having sprung up, it produced fruit—a hundredfold.”</span></p><p class="reg"> Saying these things, He was calling out, <span class="red">“The <i>one</i> having ears to hear, let him hear.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And His disciples were asking Him, “What does this parable mean?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And He said, <span class="red">“To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to <i>the</i> rest, <i>it is</i> in parables, so that,</span></p><p class="indent1stlinered">‘Seeing, they may not see;</p><p class="indentred2"> and hearing, they may not understand.’<span class="fn"><a href="#fnb" title="Isaiah 6:9">b</a></span> </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And those along the road are those having heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, lest having believed, they should be saved. </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And those upon the rock <i>are</i> those who receive the word with joy when they hear; and these have no root, who believe for a time, and in time of testing fall away. </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And that having fallen into the thorns, these are those having heard, and moving along are choked under <i>the</i> cares and riches and pleasures of life, and do not mature. </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And that in the good soil, these are those <i>who</i>, having heard the word, keep <i>it</i> in a worthy and good heart and bring forth fruit by perseverance. </p><p class="hdg">The Lesson of the Lamp<br /><span class="cross">(Mark 4:21-25)</span></p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And no one having lighted a lamp, covers it with a vessel, or puts <i>it</i> under a bed. But he puts <i>it</i> on a lampstand, so that those entering in may see the light. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>For nothing is hidden which will not become manifest, nor secret which shall not be known and come to light. </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Therefore take heed how you hear; for whoever might have, to him will be given; and whoever might not have, even what he seems to have will be taken away from him.” </p><p class="hdg">Jesus' Mother and Brothers<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 12:46-50; Mark 3:31-35)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And His mother and brothers came to Him, and they were not able to get to Him, because of the crowd. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And it was told Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see You.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But answering, He said to them, <span class="red">“My mother and my brothers are those who are hearing and doing the word of God.”</span> </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Calms the Storm<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And it came to pass, on one of the days also, He with His disciples entered into a boat, and He said to them, <span class="red">“Let us pass over to the other side of the lake.”</span> And they launched out. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And of them sailing, He fell asleep. And a storm of wind came down on the lake, and they were being swamped, and were in danger. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And having approached, they awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!”</p><p class="reg"> And having arisen, He rebuked the wind and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and there was a calm. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And He said to them, <span class="red">“Where is your faith?”</span></p><p class="reg"> And having been afraid, they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?” </p><p class="hdg">The Demons and the Pigs<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 8:28-34; Mark 5:1-20)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And they sailed down to the region of the Gerasenes,<span class="fn"><a href="#fnc" title="BYZ and TR ‘Gadarenes’; also in verse 37">c</a></span> which is opposite Galilee. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And He having gone forth upon the land, a certain man out of the city met <i>Him</i>, having demons, and a long time he was not wearing clothing and did not abide in a house, but in the tombs. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And having seen Jesus, having cried out, he fell down before Him and said in a loud voice, “What to me and to You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore of You <i>that</i> You might not torment me!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>For He was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For it had seized him many times, and he was bound, being kept with chains and shackles. And breaking the chains, he was driven by the demon into the deserts. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And Jesus asked him, <span class="red">“What is your name?”</span></p><p class="reg"> And he said, “Legion,” because many demons were entered into him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And they were begging Him not to command them to depart into the abyss. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And there was a herd of many pigs feeding there in the mountain, and they begged Him that He would allow them to enter into them; and He allowed them. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And the demons having gone out from the man, entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake, and was drowned. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And those feeding <i>them</i>, having seen that having taken place, fled and reported <i>it</i> to the city and to the country. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And they went out to see that having taken place, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting, clothed, and being of sound mind, at the feet of Jesus. And they were afraid. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And those having seen <i>it</i> related to them how the <i>one</i> having been possessed by demons was healed. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And all the multitude of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked Him to depart from them, because they were seized with great fear. And He, having entered into the boat, turned back. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>But the man from whom the demons had gone was begging Him to be <i>taken</i> with Him. But He sent him away saying, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span><span class="red">“Return to your house, and relate all that God has done for you.”</span> And he departed, proclaiming through the whole city all that Jesus had done for him. </p><p class="hdg">The Healing Touch of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:21-43)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And when Jesus returned, the crowd received Him, for they were all looking for Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And behold, a man whose name <i>was</i> Jairus came, and he was a ruler of the synagogue, and having fallen at the feet of Jesus, he began begging Him to come to his house, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>because he had an only daughter, about twelve years <i>old</i>, and she was dying.</p><p class="reg"> And as He went, the crowds were pressing around Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And a woman being with a flux of blood for twelve years, who, having spent all her living on physicians,<span class="fn"><a href="#fnd" title="NE and WH do not include ‘She had spent all her money on physicians’">d</a></span> was not able to be healed by <i>anyone</i>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>Having come behind <i>Him</i>, she touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her flux of blood stopped. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And Jesus said, <span class="red">“Who <i>is</i> the <i>one</i> having touched Me?”</span></p><p class="reg"> But all were denying <i>it</i>. Peter<span class="fn"><a href="#fne" title="BYZ and TR include ‘and those who were with him’">e</a></span> said, “Master, the people surround You and press in.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>But Jesus said, <span class="red">“Someone touched Me, for I know power has gone out from Me.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And the woman, having seen that she was not hidden, came trembling, and having fallen down before Him before all the people, she declared for what cause she touched Him, and how she was healed immediately. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And He said to her, <span class="red">“Daughter, your faith has healed you; go in peace.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>Of Him still speaking, one comes from the synagogue ruler, saying, “Your daughter has died; trouble the Teacher no longer.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>But Jesus having heard, answered him, <span class="red">“Fear not; only believe, and she will be saved.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>And having entered into the house, He did not allow anyone to go in with Him, except Peter and John and James and the father and the mother of the child. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>And all were weeping and mourning for her.
