And the Twelve were with Him, <a href="/luke/8-2.htm">2</a>and certain women who had been cured from evil spirits and infirmities: Mary who is called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, <a href="/luke/8-3.htm">3</a>and Joanna wife of Chuza, a steward of Herod, and Susanna, and many others, who were ministering to them<a href="#fna" title="TR ‘to Him’">a</a> out of their own means. The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-9; Mark 4:1-9)<a href="/luke/8-4.htm">4</a>And as a great crowd is assembling, and those from each town are coming to Him, He spoke by a parable: <a href="/luke/8-5.htm">5</a>“The one sowing went out to sow his seed. And in his sowing, some indeed fell along the road, and it was trampled upon, and the birds of the air devoured it. <a href="/luke/8-6.htm">6</a>And other fell upon the rock, and having sprung up it withered through having no moisture. <a href="/luke/8-7.htm">7</a>And other fell in the midst of the thorns, and the thorns having sprung up with it, choked it. <a href="/luke/8-8.htm">8</a>And other fell upon the good soil, and having sprung up, it produced fruit—a hundredfold.” Saying these things, He was calling out, “The one having ears to hear, let him hear.” <a href="/luke/8-9.htm">9</a>And His disciples were asking Him, “What does this parable mean?” <a href="/luke/8-10.htm">10</a>And He said, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest, it is in parables, so that,‘Seeing, they may not see; and hearing, they may not understand.’<a href="#fnb" title="Isaiah 6:9">b</a> <a href="/luke/8-11.htm">11</a>And the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. <a href="/luke/8-12.htm">12</a>And those along the road are those having heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, lest having believed, they should be saved. <a href="/luke/8-13.htm">13</a>And those upon the rock are those who receive the word with joy when they hear; and these have no root, who believe for a time, and in time of testing fall away. <a href="/luke/8-14.htm">14</a>And that having fallen into the thorns, these are those having heard, and moving along are choked under the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and do not mature. <a href="/luke/8-15.htm">15</a>And that in the good soil, these are those who, having heard the word, keep it in a worthy and good heart and bring forth fruit by perseverance. The Lesson of the Lamp (Mark 4:21-25)<a href="/luke/8-16.htm">16</a>And no one having lighted a lamp, covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed. But he puts it on a lampstand, so that those entering in may see the light. <a href="/luke/8-17.htm">17</a>For nothing is hidden which will not become manifest, nor secret which shall not be known and come to light. <a href="/luke/8-18.htm">18</a>Therefore take heed how you hear; for whoever might have, to him will be given; and whoever might not have, even what he seems to have will be taken away from him.” Jesus' Mother and Brothers (Matthew 12:46-50; Mark 3:31-35)<a href="/luke/8-19.htm">19</a>And His mother and brothers came to Him, and they were not able to get to Him, because of the crowd. <a href="/luke/8-20.htm">20</a>And it was told Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see You.” <a href="/luke/8-21.htm">21</a>But answering, He said to them, “My mother and my brothers are those who are hearing and doing the word of God.” Jesus Calms the Storm (Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41)<a href="/luke/8-22.htm">22</a>And it came to pass, on one of the days also, He with His disciples entered into a boat, and He said to them, “Let us pass over to the other side of the lake.” And they launched out. <a href="/luke/8-23.htm">23</a>And of them sailing, He fell asleep. And a storm of wind came down on the lake, and they were being swamped, and were in danger. <a href="/luke/8-24.htm">24</a>And having approached, they awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And having arisen, He rebuked the wind and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and there was a calm. <a href="/luke/8-25.htm">25</a>And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And having been afraid, they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?” The Demons and the Pigs (Matthew 8:28-34; Mark 5:1-20)<a href="/luke/8-26.htm">26</a>And they sailed down to the region of the Gerasenes,<a href="#fnc" title="BYZ and TR ‘Gadarenes’; also in verse 37">c</a> which is opposite Galilee. <a href="/luke/8-27.htm">27</a>And He having gone forth upon the land, a certain man out of the city met Him, having demons, and a long time he was not wearing clothing and did not abide in a house, but in the tombs. <a href="/luke/8-28.htm">28</a>And having seen Jesus, having cried out, he fell down before Him and said in a loud voice, “What to me and to You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore of You that You might not torment me!” <a href="/luke/8-29.htm">29</a>For He was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For it had seized him many times, and he was bound, being kept with chains and shackles. And breaking the chains, he was driven by the demon into the deserts. <a href="/luke/8-30.htm">30</a>And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demons were entered into him. <a href="/luke/8-31.htm">31</a>And they were begging Him not to command them to depart into the abyss. <a href="/luke/8-32.htm">32</a>And there was a herd of many pigs feeding there in the mountain, and they begged Him that He would allow them to enter into them; and He allowed them. <a href="/luke/8-33.htm">33</a>And the demons having gone out from the man, entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake, and was drowned. <a href="/luke/8-34.htm">34</a>And those feeding them, having seen that having taken place, fled and reported it to the city and to the country. <a href="/luke/8-35.htm">35</a>And they went out to see that having taken place, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting, clothed, and being of sound mind, at the feet of Jesus. And they were afraid. <a href="/luke/8-36.htm">36</a>And those having seen it related to them how the one having been possessed by demons was healed. <a href="/luke/8-37.htm">37</a>And all the multitude of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked Him to depart from them, because they were seized with great fear. And He, having entered into the boat, turned back. <a href="/luke/8-38.htm">38</a>But the man from whom the demons had gone was begging Him to be taken with Him. But He sent him away saying, <a href="/luke/8-39.htm">39</a>“Return to your house, and relate all that God has done for you.” And he departed, proclaiming through the whole city all that Jesus had done for him. The Healing Touch of Jesus (Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:21-43)<a href="/luke/8-40.htm">40</a>And when Jesus returned, the crowd received Him, for they were all looking for Him. <a href="/luke/8-41.htm">41</a>And behold, a man whose name was Jairus came, and he was a ruler of the synagogue, and having fallen at the feet of Jesus, he began begging Him to come to his house, <a href="/luke/8-42.htm">42</a>because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. And as He went, the crowds were pressing around Him. <a href="/luke/8-43.htm">43</a>And a woman being with a flux of blood for twelve years, who, having spent all her living on physicians,<a href="#fnd" title="NE and WH do not include ‘She had spent all her money on physicians’">d</a> was not able to be healed by anyone. <a href="/luke/8-44.htm">44</a>Having come behind Him, she touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her flux of blood stopped. <a href="/luke/8-45.htm">45</a>And Jesus said, “Who is the one having touched Me?” But all were denying it. Peter<a href="#fne" title="BYZ and TR include ‘and those who were with him’">e</a> said, “Master, the people surround You and press in.” <a href="/luke/8-46.htm">46</a>But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me, for I know power has gone out from Me.” <a href="/luke/8-47.htm">47</a>And the woman, having seen that she was not hidden, came trembling, and having fallen down before Him before all the people, she declared for what cause she touched Him, and how she was healed immediately. <a href="/luke/8-48.htm">48</a>And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you; go in peace.” <a href="/luke/8-49.htm">49</a>Of Him still speaking, one comes from the synagogue ruler, saying, “Your daughter has died; trouble the Teacher no longer.” <a href="/luke/8-50.htm">50</a>But Jesus having heard, answered him, “Fear not; only believe, and she will be saved.” <a href="/luke/8-51.htm">51</a>And having entered into the house, He did not allow anyone to go in with Him, except Peter and John and James and the father and the mother of the child. <a href="/luke/8-52.htm">52</a>And all were weeping and mourning for her.
