href="/boats/foreign_ud4.htm">UD-4</a></p> <p>140 U-boats assigned to this flotilla during its service.</p> <h3>History</h3> <p>U-Flotilla "Weddigen"* was founded on 27 Sept 1935 under the command of Fregkpt. <a href="/men/doenitz.htm">Karl Dönitz</a>, the later <strong><a href="/men/bdu.htm">BdU</a></strong>. In June 1941 the flotilla moved to <a href="bases/brest.htm">Brest</a> (France). Its history ended in Sept 1944 when it was disbanded.</p> <p> * Kptlt. <strong>Otto Weddigen</strong> was during WWI Commander of the U-boat <strong>UB-9</strong>, which sank on the 22 Sept, 1914 the 3 British cruisers <strong>HMS Aboukir</strong>, <strong>HMS Cressy</strong> and <strong>HMS Hogue</strong> (each vessel was 12,200 tons). In this single day Otto proved what a deadly weapon submarines could be.
