Besides the Kaiser, the most senior rank held by a serving officer prior to the outbreak of the war had been that of General der Infanterie/Kavallerie or Feldzeugmeister in the case of generals from the artillery branch. Included in the following article are biographical details and portraits of the nine individuals who earned the rank of Feldmarschall starting with Archduke Friedrich appointed in December 1914 to Archduke Josef appointed in October 1918. Of the nine, three were princely members of the royal household, the two Archdukes named above plus Archduke Eugen. Of the remaining six, some were descended surprisingly from much humbler forbears.聽 </p> <table border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0" width="100%"> <tbody><tr> <td width="20%">Click Below</td> <td width="45%">Name</td> <td width="35%">Patent聽</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20%"><a href="/biog/erzfried.htm"><img border="0" height="40" src="/fm2.JPG" width="92"/></a></td> <td width="45%">Erzherzog Friedrich</td> <td width="35%">8 December 1914</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20%"><a href="/biog/erzeugen.htm"><img border="0" height="40" src="/fm2.JPG" width="92"/></a></td> <td width="45%">Erzherzog Eugen</td> <td width="35%">23 November 1916 </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20%"><a href="/biog/conrad.htm"><img border="0" height="40" src="/fm2.JPG" width="92"/></a></td> <td width="45%">Franz Graf Conrad von H枚tzendorf</td> <td width="35%">25 November 1916</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20%"><a href="/biog/kovess.htm"><img border="0" height="40" src="/fm2.JPG" width="92"/></a></td> <td width="45%">Hermann Freiherr K枚vess von K枚vessh谩za</td> <td width="35%">5 August 1917</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20%"><a href="/biog/krobatin.htm"><img border="0" height="40" src="/fm2.JPG" width="92"/></a></td> <td width="45%">Alexander Freiherr von Krobatin</td> <td width="35%">5 November 1917</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20%"><a href="/biog/rohr.htm"><img border="0" height="40" src="/fm2.JPG" width="92"/></a></td> <td width="45%">Franz Freiherr Rohr von Denta</td> <td width="35%">30 January 1918</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20%"><a href="/biog/bohm.htm"><img border="0" height="40" src="/fm2.JPG" width="92"/></a></td> <td width="45%">Eduard Freiherr von B枚hm-Ermolli</td> <td width="35%">31 January 1918</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20%"><a href="/biog/boroevic.htm"><img border="0" height="40" src="/fm2.JPG" width="92"/></a></td> <td width="45%">Svetozar Boroevi膰 von Bojna</td> <td width="35%">1 February 1918</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20%"><a href="/biog/Erzjosef.htm"><img border="0" height="40" src="/fm2.JPG" width="92"/></a></td> <td width="45%">Erzherzog Josef</td> <td width="35%">24 October 1918</td> </tr> </tbody></table> <p align="center"><font size="4">Field Marshals appointed prior to World War One</font></p> <table border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0" width="100%"> <tbody><tr> <td width="20%"><a href="/biog/erzalbrecht.html"><img border="0" height="40" src="/fm2.JPG" width="92"/></a></td> <td width="45%">Erzherzog Albrecht</td> <td width="35%">04 April 1863</td> </tr> </tbody></table> <p>聽</p> <hr color="#000000" noshade="" size="4"/> <p>Sources.聽</p> <ul> <li>Der Milit盲r-Maria-Theresien-Orden 1914-1918 by General Karl Freiherr von Bardolff.</li> <li>Die letzen K.u.K.
