Environments, circumstances, and people impact growth. Some of these impacts are positive and some are not. Regardless of the situation, life continues. In This Side of Paradise, Fitzgerald uses many women in Amory’s life to show how he has grown. Some of these women he encountered only for a short period of time and others for a long period of time. Some of these women he invested emotionally, others were just acquaintances. All of these ladies have conflicting personalities, and yet at the same time, these conflicting personalities help Amory find his identity. The three ladies with various and conflicting characters are Rosalind, Eleanor, and Clara. In a similar fashion, Clara was also beautiful. She had golden hair that rippled in the sunshine and startling blue eyes that pierced right to the soul. Both ladies had to grow up quickly to adapt to new environments. For Eleanor, she was shipped from France to live in America, where she was forced to become a lady away from home. For Clara, her husband died, so she was forced to raise her two young children by herself. But Clara was almost always a near-perfect person. Eleanor, however, did not start out that way. She was the rebel of her home, and until she moved to America, was the stuck-up drama queen. As Eleanor talked with Amory, she noted something about herself. She said that the only reason that keeps her from being absolutely wicked is “fundamental honesty [which makes her] realize [her] own sins” (Fitzgerald 177). If something is not how it ethically should be then it is acceptable to rebel within the limits of what is morally correct. In Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, he presents a world where the government has restricted access to printed literature so they can gain increased control over their citizens. The main figure, Guy Montag, shows an incredible growth in his personality through his journey of enforcing and accepting the government restrictions to stop the flow of information to a realization that the sharing of knowledge leads to a stronger society. Guy Montag's role comprises many qualities, including that he is a loyal and accepting government employee that works as a "fireman" whose job is to destroy all remaining books and to burn the personal property of those that he caught reading the outlawed books. A depressing and lonely home life influences Montag's personality, including a drug-addicted and shallow wife, named Millie. While sadness and loss surround Montag, he is a strong individual that can overcome obstacles and the challenge of the government's policies. Montag struggles when he realizes the impact of his orders from his boss puts on others, and that he must take a stand for the betterment of the public. When the government is not doing their duties of protecting their citizens, either by limiting their knowledge, putting them in danger or destroying those who disagree with them these actions can prompt citizens to turn toward rebellion.

1222 Words

5 Pages

Good Essays

Decent Essays

The Other Side Of Paradise Character Analysis

923 Words

4 Pages

The Other Side Of Paradise Character Analysis

The Other Side of Paradise explores topics society refuses to speak about today. In Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, his writing captures a glimpse of this world. The main character, Guy Montag is a local fireman. However, in this utopian society the firemen start the fires rather than putting them out by burning books to censor any controversial thoughts. His boss, Captain Beatty, is a very intelligent, intimidating man. Montag has a wife, Mildred, but they are nowhere near what today’s society would consider a married couple. Mildred and her friends, specifically Mrs. Bowles, have their own television “families” and they enjoy talking among other friends. Montag meets a rebellious young woman named Clarisse, who takes pride in not being what the society tells her to be. Each character has their own way of contributing to the many themes that form throughout the book. In this novel, the fear of differentially provides a strong foundation for the loss of self and intimacy, eventually leading to the complete destruction of the concept of family.

1704 Words

7 Pages

Better Essays

Good Essays

The Use of Characterization and Symbolism in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby

1223 Words

5 Pages

The Use of Characterization and Symbolism in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby

Fitzgerald expresses the corruption of the American dream through the use of characterization of different characters. Another recurring theme is Fitzgerald's disgust with social classes, and he often focuses on the upper class.
