The "iron scepter" is a symbol of unyielding strength and dominion, often associated with kingship. In ancient Near Eastern cultures, a scepter was a common emblem of royal authority. The use of "iron" emphasizes the strength and durability of this rule, suggesting that it cannot be easily broken or challenged. This imagery is echoed in <a href="/revelation/19-15.htm">Revelation 19:15</a>, where Christ is depicted as ruling with a rod of iron, indicating His ultimate authority over the nations. The breaking of nations implies judgment and the establishment of divine order, aligning with the messianic expectations of a ruler who would bring justice and peace.<p><b>You will shatter them like pottery.&#8221;</b><br>The imagery of shattering pottery conveys the idea of complete destruction and the ease with which it can be accomplished. Pottery, once broken, cannot be easily repaired, symbolizing the finality of judgment. This metaphor reflects the fragility of human power and opposition to divine authority. In the cultural context of the ancient world, pottery was a common household item, and its breaking would be a familiar image of ruin. This phrase also connects to the prophetic literature, such as <a href="/isaiah/30-14.htm">Isaiah 30:14</a>, where the shattering of pottery is used to describe the totality of God's judgment. The messianic interpretation sees this as a type of Christ's ultimate victory over His enemies, fulfilling the promise of divine justice and the establishment of His eternal kingdom.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/t/the_anointed_one.htm">The Anointed One (Messiah)</a></b><br>The central figure in <a href="/bsb/psalms/2.htm">Psalm 2</a>, often interpreted as a prophecy concerning Jesus Christ, who is given authority by God to rule and judge the nations.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/t/the_nations.htm">The Nations</a></b><br>Represent the collective opposition to God's rule and His Anointed. The use to be made of it--<span class= "ital">to</span> <span class= "ital">dash the nations in pieces, as one breaks a potter's vessel</span>--points to the latter of these significations here.<p>"Then shalt thou bring full low . . . <div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/psalms/2.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 9.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron</span>. It is said that these words, and those of the next clause, "cannot describe the mild rule of Christ" (Rosenmuller, Do Wette, Hupfeld, etc.). But the objectors forget that there is a severe, as well as a mild, side to the dealings of God with his human creatures. St. Paul notes in the same verse both the "severity" and the "goodness" of God (<a href="/romans/11-22.htm">Romans 11:22</a>). Christ, though "the Prince of Peace," "came to send a sword upon the earth" (<a href="/matthew/10-34.htm">Matthew 10:34</a>). As the appointed Judge of men, he takes vengeance on the wicked, while he rewards the righteous (<a href="/luke/3-17.htm">Luke 3:17</a>; <a href="/matthew/25-46.htm">Matthew 25:46</a>). Nay, St. John, in the Apocalypse, declares that "out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations. and "<span class="accented">ye shall rule them with a rod of iron"</span> (<a href="/revelation/19-15.htm">Revelation 19:15</a>; comp. 2:27; 12:5). So, with respect to the other clause of the verse - <span class="cmt_word">Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel</span> - it is to be noted that there is a similar threat made by the Lord of hosts against Jerusalem in the Book of Jeremiah (Jeremiah 19:11), and that under the new covenant the same is threatened in the Revelation (Revelation 2:27). In truth, both covenants are alike in denouncing the extreme of God's wrath on impenitent sinners, such as those here spoken of. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/psalms/2-9.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">You will break them</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1514;&#1468;&#1456;&#1453;&#1512;&#1465;&#1506;&#1461;&#1501;</span> <span class="translit">(t&#601;&#183;r&#333;&#183;&#8216;&#234;m)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine singular &#124; third person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7489.htm">Strong's 7489: </a> </span><span class="str2">To spoil, to make, good for, nothing, bad</span><br /><br /><span class="word">an iron</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1489;&#1468;&#1463;&#1512;&#1456;&#1494;&#1462;&#1425;&#1500;</span> <span class="translit">(bar&#183;zel)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1270.htm">Strong's 1270: </a> </span><span class="str2">Iron, an iron implement</span><br /><br /><span class="word">scepter;</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1489;&#1468;&#1456;&#1513;&#1473;&#1461;&#1443;&#1489;&#1462;&#1496;</span> <span class="translit">(b&#601;&#183;&#353;&#234;&#183;&#7687;e&#7789;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-b &#124; Noun - masculine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7626.htm">Strong's 7626: </a> </span><span class="str2">Rod, staff, club, scepter, tribe</span><br /><br /><span class="word">You {will} shatter them</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1514;&#1468;&#1456;&#1504;&#1463;&#1508;&#1468;&#1456;&#1510;&#1461;&#1469;&#1501;&#1475;</span> <span class="translit">(t&#601;&#183;nap&#183;p&#601;&#183;&#7779;&#234;m)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Piel - Imperfect - second person masculine singular &#124; third person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5310.htm">Strong's 5310: </a> </span><span class="str2">To dash to pieces, scatter</span><br /><br /><span class="word">like pottery.&#8221;</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1497;&#1493;&#1465;&#1510;&#1461;&#1443;&#1512;</span> <span class="translit">(y&#333;&#183;w&#183;&#7779;&#234;r)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3335.htm">Strong's 3335: </a> </span><span class="str2">To mould into a, form, as a, potter, to determine</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/psalms/2-9.htm">Psalm 2:9 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/psalms/2-9.htm">Psalm 2:9 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/psalms/2-9.htm">Psalm 2:9 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/psalms/2-9.htm">Psalm 2:9 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/psalms/2-9.htm">Psalm 2:9 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/psalms/2-9.htm">Psalm 2:9 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/psalms/2-9.htm">Psalm 2:9 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/psalms/2-9.htm">Psalm 2:9 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/psalms/2-9.htm">Psalm 2:9 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/psalms/2-9.htm">Psalm 2:9 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/psalms/2-9.htm">OT Poetry: Psalm 2:9 You shall break them with a rod (Psalm Ps Psa.) </a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/psalms/2-8.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Psalm 2:8"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Psalm 2:8" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/psalms/2-10.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Psalm 2:10"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Psalm 2:10" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
