This inspiring recount of the veterinarians, cowboys, soldiers, and other professionals who came together to save this race of horses living on the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico from drought, foot shortages, and burgeoning military activity. They were able to have them removed and succeeded in preserving “the greatest horses of the American West”. This week Linking in Lincoln will take a look at this noble breed through the eyes of history, mythology, and of course television. Hope you’re not afraid to ride blogger…

Hmm… did you know that the horse is “an odd-toed ungulate mammal one of eight living species of the family of Equidae.” Well of course I did (common knowledge people…..umm yeah) but just in case you were not aware, please check out Wikipedia.com for all you ever needed to know about the species Equidae.

I’m sure we’re all familiar with the most famous men and women in history, but how much to do we know about the famous horses? Go to Encyclopedia Smithsonian for the names and descriptions of great deeds these animals preformed.

“A horse is horse, of course of course….”Recognize the tune? I would hope so, Mr. Ed is only the most well known horse/tv personality in televised history! For a little glimpse into this classic show, please head to youtube.com for a clip of Mr. Ed the talking horse.

3 words. The. Trojan. War. Another famous horse, one that has spawned countless endeavors into mythology, history, literature and a mediocre movie that was saved only by Brad Pitt. If knowledge is your thing then head to Stanford.edu for a more comprehensive look at this famous war.

Hippokampoi are horses of the sea. To find out more about this mythological beast, take a look at theoi.com

Epona was a Celtic goddess of horses also known for her cornucopia- or horn of plenty. Take a look at Wikipedia.com for more!

Ok bloggers, are you now experienced riders? I hope so! The cold is slowly sweeping in, and it’s starting to look like an early fall! I’m not a huge fan of the heat so I couldn’t be more excited about getting out my scarves, jeans, and….husker sweatshirts. Yep! In addition to fall it is now officially HUSKER SEASON! If you’re from Nebraska I’m sure your internal clock has already gone off and with the first game (an impressive win) underway I think we’re headed for a great season. This week in history should prove to be just as exciting. We have quotes from the great Theodore Roosevelt, The Vietnam War, and a little boxing to liven things up a bit. Ready to join me bloggers?

Sept 1, 1923: Boxer Rocky Marciano is born today. Care to join us?

Our first order of business should be to introduce the writer. Ladies and Gentlemen, by way of his own website, may I introduce Mr. Phillip Lopate of Brooklyn! For his bio, and extensive collection of books please check out philliplopate.com

The personal essay is nothing new….or is it? Check out this great new website, Fresh Yarn.com. This online salon for personal essays features some of the best and brightest. If I’m not mistaken I may have seen one from the writer of Mad About You ( you know in case we have any fans…).

Mr. Lopate takes a “sardonic” look at the dinner party. Well, as luck would have so has Seinfeld. For the funniest 42 seconds of your day head to youtube.com for a fun clip of the episode cleverly named The Dinner Party.

Phillip Lopate worked with students for 12 years as a “writer in the school”, and one of his most famous books “Being with Children” derived from those experiences. Now there are some things only a teacher can understand, some skills and behavioral quirks that only they will possess. So to get in on the joke head to teachingheart.net for “How to Tell if You’re a Real Teacher”.

Painter Henri Matisse had his own interpretation of Joie de Vivre. For a look at his epic painting The Joy of Life- go here.

Uncle Vanya is a book by Chekhov, a play in which Mr. Lopate produced with a group of pre-adolescents AND a restaurant in NYC. For a review of the restaurant (you’re on the own with the rest) check out nymag.com.
