Robert Vincent Voice Library. The mission of the Voice Library is to collect and preserve spoken word recordings of people from all walks of life with some dating back to the early 19th century. Pieces preserved in the Voice Library provide a unique contextual element to human history.</p> <p>As part of the MotorCities Challenge Grant program, the Voice Library received a $9,000 award to digitize and catalogue the Auto Town gallery interviews which provided a rare glimpse into the shop floor world of workers and beyond at the General Motors’ Fisher Body and Diamond REO assembly plants in Lansing.</p> <p>“This online gallery offers the opportunity to listen to the ordinary, the extraordinary, the wit and candor of these men and women as they discuss experiences and perceptions about factory work, labor and management relations, corporations, the community and motivations for union activism,” according to the Voice Library website.</p> <p>John D. Shaw, assistant unit head and supervisor at the Voice Library, says the Auto Town gallery provides a comprehensive and unique look at the role of auto workers in not only daily life at the plants but at labor history.</p> <p>“So what we got what were interviews with a segment of people that’s really not observed and those were the people on the shop floor,” says Shaw.</p> <p>The Vincent Voice Library at MSU was established in 1961 from the donation of a private collection of recordings from G. Robert Vincent, a pioneer in the field of sound recording who collected voice recordings from notable figures throughout American history. Vincent is known for creating the V-Disc program during World War II where he served as an Army officer, and he also invented the multilingual translation and recording system designed for the Nuremburg trials in 1945, according to the Voice Library website.</p> <p>The MotorCities National Heritage Area is a non-profit affiliate of the National Park Service dedicated to preserving, interpreting and promoting the region’s rich automotive and labor heritage through the development and deployment of educational and informational programs.
