They include:</p> <p>• Trustee elections could be moved from May to November.<br/> • Board members’ terms could be extended from three years to four years.<br/> • The superintendent could only be fired if at least six trustees of the nine on the school board vote for it. (Now, it only requires a majority.)<br/> • DISD school board members could be paid the same as the average teacher salary in DISD.</p> <p>Even if Anchia’s bill becomes law, the proposed changes would only go into effect if voters approve them.</p> <p>In addition, Anchia’s bill would allow Dallas ISD to start the school year before the state-mandated last Monday in August. It means DISD students could have longer school years and a several-week jumpstart on other districts in preparing for state exams.</p> <p>Anchia, D-Dallas, wrote the bill so it would only apply to a district with between 125,000 students and 200,000 students and has its administrative offices in a county with at least 2 million residents. The only Texas district that fits those categories are Dallas ISD.</p> <p>The proposed legislation could transform Dallas ISD in a way that supporters of the home-rule charter effort had envisioned. They advocated moving board elections to November, when more voters participate, and to make it more difficult to get rid of the superintendent.
