id="fontprefs_bottom" class="georgia md"><p>Offering a virtual immersion in Hawaii's diverse marine life, the 3-acre complex sits on a bluff overlooking Maalae'a Harbor (pronounced MAH-ah-lie-ah). All told, the $20 million facility, which opened in 1998, is home to more than 300 species - the largest collection anywhere in Hawaii. <p>The aquarium displays these creatures in a variety of exhibits, including re-creations of a living reef, a turtle lagoon and a tide pool. A separate open-ocean habitat teems with stingrays, eagle rays and six species of sharks. There's even a new wing focusing on marine mammals, though it does not contain any of the creatures themselves. <p>Jim Luecke, the facility's assistant curator of exhibits, says the aquarium is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of marine life in and around Maui - an ecosystem regarded as one of the most diverse and geographically isolated in the entire world. <p>"You can come here and come up close and personal to many things that you would be able to do snorkeling or diving," he says. "Of course the best part is that at the Maui Ocean Center you can do it all without getting wet." <p>Visits to the aquarium begin near what is called the "surge zone." This exhibit re-creates the area that tourists would see near Black Rock on Kaanapali Beach - tidal flats that bear the brunt of crashing waves. The tanks are full of all sorts of wildlife, from sea anemones to yellow butterfly fish. <p>Next, inside an area dubbed the "Living Reef," visitors wander through a series of placards that explain how Hawaii became populated with marine wildlife, suggesting that a current flowing northeast from the Philippines probably brought the first larvae to the islands millions of years ago. <p>A special exhibit introduces the Triggerfish, the Hawaiian state fish. This is the creature with the infamously long name: humuhumunukunukuapua'a. Try saying that five times fast. (Or just go with humuhumu, HOO-moo-HOO-moo.) <p>The Maui Ocean Center is owned by Coral World International, a marine-park operator renowned for coral rehabilitation projects all over the world. Not surprisingly, the facility's coral collection is the largest in the world, containing 15 species in all. <p>Some of these specimens started as fragments of broken or damaged reefs just offshore; many have doubled and tripled in size since the aquarium opened in 1998. Luecke notes that site biologists will reintroduce most of the coral into the wild at some point in the future. <p>The displays are informative as well as beautiful. Easy-to-follow signs detail the symbiotic relationship between the coral animal and the plants it grows on, as well as examples of how some coral can grow its own algae for food. <p>A special section on black coral, Hawaii's state gem, tells visitors about how this species is related to sea anemones like most coral, but consists primarily of conchiolin, a protein found in pearls. The exhibit also describes the lengths to which some coral hunters historically (and currently) have gone to in order to illegally harvest and sell it. <p>"The history of that coral is pretty amazing when you consider it," Luecke says. "Seamen used to bring it back as gifts for their kings, so it was called 'King's Coral' in the olden days." <p>Water for all of these exhibits comes straight from the sea. In a small exhibit near the coral tanks, signage explains that the aquarium pipes in millions of gallons each month. The facility returns every drop it takes, providing a natural filtration system that brings a constant stream of nutrients to its captive critters. <p>Those who don't mind getting wet (and who are scuba-certified and over 15) can test the waters in the 750,000-gallon shark tank three nights a week. For prices starting at $199, participants can swim with more than 20 sharks, plus stingrays and schools of tropical fish. <p>The Ocean Center's newest exhibition, the Marine Mammal Discovery Center, doesn't have any living critters at all. Opened last year, it focuses on some of Hawaii's other native creatures: dolphins, seals and humpback whales. <p>These exhibits educate through a series of interactive stations, including one that teaches visitors about patterns in whale songs. Another station enables children to experience whale research by using a video game to snap identification photos of whale tails. But happily, their subjects are left free to roam in the ocean - while visitors are left with a better understanding of the mammals' home. <hr/> If you go <p>Maui Ocean Center, 192 Maalae'a Road, Wailuku.
