<t><p class="indent1">Would that land<MH776> not be completely<MH2610> defiled<MH2610>? <t><p class="indent1">But you are a prostitute<MH2181> <i>with</i> many<MH7227a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>lovers<MH7453>; <t><p class="indent1">Yet you turn<MH7725> to Me,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>“Raise<MH5375> your eyes<MH5869> to the bare<MH8205> heights<MH8205> and see<MH7200>; <t><p class="indent1">Where<MH375> have you not been violated<MH7693>? <t><p class="indent1">You have sat<MH3427> for them by the roads<MH1870> <t><p class="indent1">Like an Arab<MH6163b> in the desert<MH4057b>, <t><p class="indent1">And you have defiled<MH2610> a land<MH776> <t><p class="indent1">With your prostitution<MH2183> and your wickedness<MH7463a>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>“Therefore the showers<MH7241> have been withheld<MH4513>, <t><p class="indent1">And there has been<MH1961> no<MH3808> spring<MH4456> rain<MH4456>. <t><p class="indent1">Yet you had<MH1961> a prostitute’s<MH802, 2181> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>forehead<MH4696>; <t><p class="indent1">You refused<MH3985> to be ashamed<MH3637>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>“Have you not just now<MH6258> called<MH7121> to Me, <t><p class="indent1">‘My Father<MH1>, You are the friend<MH441a> of my youth<MH5271>? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>‘Will He be<MH5201> angry<MH5201> forever<MH5769>, <t><p class="indent1">Or<MH518> keep<MH8104> <i>His anger</i> to the end<MH5331>?’ <t><p class="indent1">Behold<MH2009>, you have spoken<MH1696> <t><p class="indent1">And have done<MH6213a> evil<MH7451a> things<MH7451a>, <t><p class="indent1">And you have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>had<MH3201> your own way<MH3201>.” <p class="hdg">Faithless Israel</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to me in the days<MH3117> of King<MH4428> Josiah<MH2977>, “Have you seen<MH7200> what<MH834> faithless<MH4878> Israel<MH3478> did<MH6213a>? She went<MH1980> up on every<MH3605> high<MH1364> hill<MH2022> and under<MH8478> every<MH3605> leafy<MH7488> tree<MH6086>, and she prostituted<MH2181> herself there<MH8033>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Yet I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>thought<MH559>, ‘After<MH310> she has done<MH6213a> all<MH3605> these<MH428> things<MH428> she will return<MH7725> to Me’; but she did not return<MH7725>, and her treacherous<MH901> sister<MH269> Judah<MH3063> saw<MH7200> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And I saw<MH7200> that for all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>adulteries<MH5003> of faithless<MH4878> Israel<MH3478>, I had sent<MH7971> her away<MH7971> and given<MH5414> her a certificate<MH5612> of divorce<MH3748>, yet her treacherous<MH898> sister<MH269> Judah<MH3063> did not fear<MH3372a>; but she went<MH1980> and prostituted<MH2181> herself also<MH1571>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And because<MH4480> of the thoughtlessness<MH7032b> of her prostitution<MH2184>, she defiled<MH2610> the land<MH776> and committed<MH5003> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>adultery<MH5003> with stones<MH68> and trees<MH6086>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Yet<MH1571> in spite of all<MH3605> this<MH2088> her treacherous<MH901> sister<MH269> Judah<MH3063> did not return<MH7725> to Me with all<MH3605> her heart<MH3820>, but rather<MH3588, 518> in deception<MH8267>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <p class="hdg">God Invites Repentance</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to me, “Faithless<MH4878> Israel<MH3478> has proved<MH6663> herself<MH5315> to<MH6663> be<MH6663> more<MH4480> righteous<MH6663> than<MH4480> treacherous<MH898> Judah<MH3063>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Go<MH1980> and proclaim<MH7121> these<MH428> words<MH1697> toward the north<MH6828> and say<MH559>, <t><p class="indent1">‘Return<MH7725>, faithless<MH4878> Israel<MH3478>,’ declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>; <t><p class="indent1">‘I will not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>look<MH5307> at you in<MH5307> anger<MH5307>. <t><p class="indent1">For I am gracious<MH2623>,’ declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>; <t><p class="indent1">‘I will not be<MH5201> angry<MH5201> forever<MH5769>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>‘Only<MH389> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>acknowledge<MH3045> your wrongdoing<MH5771>, <t><p class="indent1">That you have revolted<MH6586> against the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>, <t><p class="indent1">And have scattered<MH6340> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>favors<MH1870> to the strangers<MH2114a> under<MH8478> every<MH3605> leafy<MH7488> tree<MH6086>, <t><p class="indent1">And you have not obeyed<MH8085> My voice<MH6963>,’ declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>‘Return<MH7725>, you faithless<MH7726> sons<MH1121>,’ declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>; <t><p class="indent1">‘For I am<MH1166> a<MH1166> master<MH1166> to you, <t><p class="indent1">And I will take<MH3947> you, one<MH259> from a city<MH5892b> and two<MH8147> from a family<MH4940>, <t><p class="indent1">And bring<MH935> you to Zion<MH6726>.’ <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“Then I will give<MH5414> you shepherds<MH7462a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>after My own heart<MH3820>, who will feed<MH7462a> you knowledge<MH1844> and understanding<MH7919a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And it shall be in those<MH1992a> days<MH3117> when<MH3588> you become<MH7235a> numerous<MH7235a> and are<MH6509> fruitful<MH6509> in the land<MH776>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, “they will no<MH3808> longer<MH5750> say<MH559>, ‘The ark<MH727> of the covenant<MH1285> of the LORD<MH3068>.’ And it will not come<MH5927> to mind<MH3820>, nor<MH3808> will they remember<MH2142> it, nor<MH3808> miss<MH6485> <i>it,</i> nor<MH3808> will it be made<MH6213a> again<MH5750>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>At that time<MH6256> they will call<MH7121> Jerusalem<MH3389> ‘The Throne<MH3678> of the LORD<MH3068>,’ and all<MH3605> the nations<MH1471> will assemble<MH6960b> at it, at Jerusalem<MH3389>, for the name<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068>; and they will no<MH3808> longer<MH5750> follow<MH1980, 310> the stubbornness<MH8307> of their evil<MH7451a> heart<MH3820>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>In those<MH1992a> days<MH3117> the house<MH1004> of Judah<MH3063> will walk<MH1980> with the house<MH1004> of Israel<MH3478>, and they will come<MH935> together<MH3164a> from the land<MH776> of the north<MH6828> to the land<MH776> that I gave<MH5157> your fathers<MH1> as<MH5157> an<MH5157> inheritance<MH5157>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>“Then I said<MH559>, <t><p class="indent1">‘How<MH349> I would set<MH7896> you among <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>My sons<MH1121> <t><p class="indent1">And give<MH5414> you a pleasant<MH2532> land<MH776>, <t><p class="indent1">The most<MH6643a> beautiful<MH6643a> inheritance<MH5159> of the nations<MH1471>!’ <t><p class="indent1">And I said<MH559>, ‘You shall call<MH7121> Me, My Father<MH1>, <t><p class="indent1">And not turn<MH7725> away<MH7725> from following<MH310> Me.’ <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>“However<MH403>, <i>as</i> a woman<MH802> treacherously<MH898> leaves<MH898, 4480> her lover<MH7453>, <t><p class="indent1">So<MH3651> you have dealt<MH898> treacherously<MH898> with Me, <t><p class="indent1">House<MH1004> of Israel<MH3478>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>A voice<MH6963> is heard<MH8085> on the bare<MH8205> heights<MH8205>, <t><p class="indent1">The weeping<MH1065>, the pleading<MH8469> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <t><p class="indent1">Because<MH3588> they have perverted<MH5753a> their way<MH1870>, <t><p class="indent1">They have forgotten<MH7911> the LORD<MH3068> their God<MH430>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>“Return<MH7725>, you faithless<MH7726> sons<MH1121>, <t><p class="indent1">I will heal<MH7495> your faithlessness<MH4878>.” <t><p class="indent1">“Behold<MH2009>, we come<MH857> to You; <t><p class="indent1">For You are the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>“Certainly<MH403> the hills<MH1389> are a deception<MH8267>, <t><p class="indent1"><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>Commotion<MH1995> <i>on</i> the mountains<MH2022>. <t><p class="indent1">Certainly<MH403> in the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430> <t><p class="indent1">Is the salvation<MH8668> of Israel<MH3478>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>“But the shame<MH1322> has consumed<MH398> the product<MH3018> of<MH3018> our fathers’<MH1> labor<MH3018> since<MH4480> our youth<MH5271>—their flocks<MH6629> and their herds<MH1241>, their sons<MH1121> and their daughters<MH1323>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/3-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Let us lie<MH7901> down<MH7901> in our shame<MH1322>, and let our humiliation<MH3639> cover<MH3680> us;
